People were actually scared of gay people in the same way people with arachnophobia are scared of spiders.
A gay person walks into a room and someone jumps on the sofa in case the gay person walks over there foot.
...Its a slow work day today |

Can you imagine the sheer panic any such sufferer would experience if they inadvertently found themselves at a Pride event? |

"I like spiders. And hay people.
Would it go down well if I ran over and tried to pick them up and move them to safety? "
No, they're not natural and should be destroyed. Leave them in the face of danger, they made their choice.
Gay people are cool though. |

Some men are terrified of being treated the way they treat women - as prey to be preyed on.
I remember going with a straight guy to a LGBT bar.
Everyone he spoke with someone, he insisted on telling them he wasn't gay.
I took him to one side.
"When you go into a straight place, do you think every woman fancies you?" I asked.
"No."
"So why would you think every guy in a gay place would fancy you?"
I think he got it, I'm not sure.
Not seem him since, anyway.

This would be hilarious, spot a gay and get a shiver down your spine then just slowly back out of the room. Would they sell gay repellent to spray them with to keep them away? |

I took one of my friends into a gay bar once and didn't tell him it was a gay bar till about an hour in, he instantly was like tensing his fairly large muscles and puffing his chest out. I had to explain to him that that would t make him in approachable, instead it looked like he was peacocking to get attention lol |

Lol
I've come to realise anyway there is no such thing as a straight bar.
Go into any bar and you cannot make assumptions about anyone's sexuality.
I've met the most interesting men in places I least expected to. |

"Homophobes ARE scared of gays.
Their fear is what leads to homophobia.
I jump on the couch when I see one naked"

If it's largely using the same psychological mechanisms, then how the person puts their front on, often trying typically masking what's going underneath, is a distraction.
Millions of people aren't particularly self-aware, many of them cut-off from their feelings (and happens a lot with men in our culture) and they go through life never potentially scratching much of the surface to themselves. I think homophobic people are often amongst these. If people are resistant to others, they may avoid encounters where they'd be meeting people that they don't want to and certainly not allowing themselves to open up to others, nor vice versa, as they'd probably find it too great a challenge to their hardened self-perception, beliefs etc. Such people will usually live in denial, potentially of some aspect of themselves - and the other old Freud's concept of projection - where they'll project onto others what they dislike about themselves.
There can be a lot going on inside of ourselves - we may have acquired and established psychological mechanisms that 'protect' us accidentally: it'll typically not have been a thought induced, conscious undertaking. We lose out, as we potentially lose some aspect of ourselves, with things being pushed outside of our consciousness. People can overcome phobias fairly easily and quickly: our discomfort that's arisen through encountering what we've construed as a threat is usually the barrier that later stops us gaining greater intimacy with others and personal comfort.
