Does anyone else think that Reality TV has ruined television?

For example, I remember when MTV used to be about the music but now, its filled with nonsensical reality crap like Teen Moms and Jersey Shore.

Most of these shows are so fake and scripted. It's no wonder I don't watch much television as I used to years ago as there's nothing good on TV anymore except when a new series of Doctor Who is on and when Christmas comes round.

I'd say no. Most of it is complete and utter shite - but nobody has to watch it. There's plenty of other telly available.

In any case, it's easy enough to avoid; and so are the people who love it.

Doesn't MTV have a seperate channel now for the reality stuff? Making it very easy to avoid and you can still watch the music channel. Overall no I don't think it's ruined television, i can still access a massive variety of things I enjoy watching.

You don't have to watch the programmes but I hate when the people on reality tv spill into programmes that I like as guests and it's applauded when they are thick as shit disguised as being funny x

If they weren't popular the channels would stop making them.

Someone must watch and enjoy but I've never heard anyone admit to it.

Even worse is when they actually pretend to be thicker than they are.

I know of two people from reality TV. Joey Essex and Gemma Collins, are they pretending?

I think it's worse than that, it's ruining society!

People seem to think all they've got to do to succeed in life is be on a reality show and the people who've been on one seem to they are "someone!"

Didn't MTV bring out a channel called MTV music? I remember seeing it and thinking it sounded ridiculous as MTV always stood for Music TV.. so to have a channel called Music Television Music.

It's the same with talent shows. They're just as fake as reality TV plus they're also fixed.

I'm not saying they're not naturally thick (sounds harsh), but I think they play on it because people find it amusing for some reason.

Watched a programme recently about pr and they were saying that these

reality people just needed a USP, unique selling point, to get on and Joey Essex's was quoted as being playing up his thickness.

I suppose if it made me money I'd pretend to be more daft than I actually am.

I wouldn't give them that much credit, more likely under instruction from their management/pr team.

It's funny how there are so many channels to choose from and yet I still can't find anything to take an interest in. Perhaps that's just me as I seem to be more nostalgic on some of the things I like which I tend to go on to YouTube for. Heck I found more entertainment on watching classic episodes of Corrie on YouTube rhathe than the recent episodes of Corrie that have been on recently

But that's just an argument for lowest common denominator productions. People that are below average, have more time to watch Tv, so they drag everything down with them.

Personally i haven't watched Tv in years other than the world cup. YouTube and subscription services like Netflix are way better.

Maybe the question is "is reality TV actual reality?"

Anything actions manipulated by producers is not reality.

My view is that reality TV should be like a camera crew following a subject with minor interruption to provide narrative. How is modern tv "real"? Its more mind control by media.

I think its the proliferation of tv channels that have been the downfall of quality programming. There is a finite amount of talent out there. It cant be everywhere at once. Too many tv execs are too busy chasing figures and headlines to actually stop and think about whether their output is actually worth watching or has any cultural value.

I've just realised another reason why Reality TV is so fake.

Most of the people on these shows are fit, supermodel types.
