I do, I want the tournament to end on a high note if possible.

As well as England did, I was sceptical about how this World Cup would play out with its potential for hardcore hooligans, racism, homophobia and the like. From friends who have now arrived home, I've heard nothing but good things about their experience. Pundits have praised the Russians, the organisers, security, etc.

Well done Russia!

It's a horrible game to be involved in, I'm a huge football fan but unfortunately it's meaningless.

No one remembers the runner up let alone the 3rd or 4th place

Frankly I’m interested in whether Harry Kane will get the golden boot. Third place would be an amazing thing but only 2 days after losing the semi I think it’s a big ask for England.

I must admit I’m finding it hard to muster enthusiasm for the game

Superb first half. Think Croatia's experience and game management came through in the end. Good experience for them though and they will learn from it. I'm having £10 a month on them from until 2020. 8/1 at the moment.

True to but cant see it being issue. We always finish top of the qualifying groups. Its just at the actual tournaments we struggle. Apart from this one.

So let me just get something straight here .

Played 7

Won 3

Lost 3

Drew 1 and won it on penalties .

The teams we beat were Panama , Tunisia , and Sweden , with Colombia being beaten on penalties .

And these statistics are those of heroes ?

How very English of us .

Let’s see if the newspapers have posters and twenty pages telling us how good we are now .....

Think the team did a lot better than expected. Think Southgate has turned them in to a team rather than a bunch of individuals and am happy.

However, out of the 32 teams in the World Cup England came 31st in terms of shots on target in open play. Only Iran had fewer.

Its great being good at set pieces but this is definitely something that needs to be looked at.

Yeah - perhaps they should take a look at proper professional athletes for some inspiration like the Tour de France over 3000km to cycle with just a handful of days off which are also spent cycling...not having rubber duck races in a luxury hotel - the oldest rider this year is 40! Not 20s - perhaps if they thought more about the sport and not their image and money - they’d have won - which when let’s face it this years World Cup has had the weakest competition ever, no Italy etc.

It was ours to lose.

No a wins a win - not our fault if the rest of them are crap. Happily have celebrated and would have been good. However we didn’t win - and the excuses they were tired etc is a bit lame.

And farting about in a game now to see who comes 3rd is a bit pointless - when it’s not even really a proper assessment of who’s 3rd, what’s not to say we would have beaten France in another round.

It be a bit like getting the 100m sprint done individually and then saying you third because you weren’t as fast - when you didn’t have the competition there.

So was the poster you are quoting .

To suggest we are the fourth best team in th world is farcical . We didn’t play any of the top ten teams except Belgium ( and lost twice to them ) and Croatia ( they may not be in the top ten ) and lost to them too . So the likes of Brazil , Germany , Spain , Portugal etc..... are not suddenly below us because we haven’t played them .

It is important that we take the victories when they come though, however small. This has been a step forward for us, no one mentions how easy our route to the semi at italia 90 was? Draw v Ireland, beat Belgium

In extra time and nearly didn’t beat Cameroon, yet we regard them as hero’s. While I’m at it check Germany’s path to the final in 2002, now that’s what I call jammy

It's been a great party, best international football tournament since Argentina '78 I reckon. I've loved this WC. I went out to watch it today to keep it going for as long as poss.

I've been out in Brum for most of the big games and I've loved the diverse ethnicity of many of the people taking an interest.

Football and a home Olympics are the only sports that can do that. Rugby and other sports that some people try compare to it aren't even on the same planet.

Football did come home this summer and it did what football does. Dissention towards it from followers of less inclusive sports is futile.

Yes is did what it always does - skips things like true doping tests (because not in the interest of the money), creates false and often damaging stereotypes, role models. Robs from the poor to give to the rich (cost of entry to game or buy a kids shirt) - is full of political corruption and managed to even break the record for the number of 999 calls than the riots did! Breeds lager lout mentality and even has religious and state divides amplified by it. The players no longer play to be the best at the sport. I’d quite simply say it’s no longer a sport but a commercial entertainment and political corrupt empire.

It’s a shame we didn’t win - but I think some reality needed - when people talk about it like we just let the cure for cancer slip through our hands. The squad will all soon be back in their mansions happy they home so they can earn some more money and increase their fame.

The squad will all soon be back in their mansions happy they home so they can earn some more money and increase their fame."

I take your cynical view (and I don't mean that nastily) onboard and I don't disagree with the parts I know to be true but really it's no different to other sports in that respect...otherwise Seb Coe would be nowhere near the role he secured.

Where there's money, there's muck.

Why else did the FBI get involved in the FIFA scandal and is it just a coincidence that the USA has secured 2026? I'm not that gullible but really, is me not watching and enjoying the WC going to change anything?

Again agree with you - it’s a shame though again it’s not what it can’t just be, something people can enjoy watching and a distraction from life.

It's the same with everything. It's why punk and rave became mainstream and accepted and it's why big business has left other minority interests alone.

Never mind, we'll always have morris dancing, they'll never take that from us.

1) During the England Croatia match, they said that each player has been tested at least 4 times this year (not sure if season or calendar year) and some eight times. That is actually a lot for professional team sports.

2) the England players all donate their appearance money to charity.

4 time in a year! As apposed to all other sports that get tested 100 of times and after each big event, they should be tested after every game read up on it - they acknowledge that drug use is prevelant both illegal and performance enhancing - it’s very easy to use PED on lead up to event and then be clean at the event, but still benefiting from the effects - the limits and what’s allowed is no where near that of other sports, a number of international players have whistle blown on how it’s used and abused in the sport. 4 times is nothing and the tests are testing for nothing . Based on the money involved you really think that no drug use in football vs olympics or other sports that the money isn’t as much is going to be the case?

A number of people who were caught were let off - there whole team cultures of use - think Lance Armstrong and postal team - he only got caught because team mates ousted him not because of testing.

Actuallt they don’t get paid for appearance. Don’t get me wrong I wish them all well with their wealth and fame, id do the same. Difference is most sportsmen/women being the best in the sport is what matters to them first, not their ego and wealth. Hence why the women’s teams are doing so well, they play for the sport not the money - but won’t be long before that equally gets corrupt. Simple fact and this isn’t my opinion but that equally of many football experts - players don’t have the sheer drive anymore to be the best.

Entirely indifferent. I did check the line ups as i was curious whether Butland would start in goal. Apparently Southgate didn't get the memo that he'd already exceeded expectations, nobody gives a flying fuck about this game and he could experiment.

They don’t - suggest you read up on it - WADA doesn’t even want to get involved, those that were caught were political, Maradona etc, and nothing happened to them. Most the tests are urine only and not blood, non of them have a blood passport like other sports. A whole team was done - 35k fine that was it. Numerous cases of players avoiding the tests, They’ve admitted they too scared to address it because it would destroy the game.

Waddington, co-author of the academic paper 'Drug use in English professional football' - published by the British Journal of Sports Medicine, was involved in a study carried out by the BBC in 2003 which indicated more than 150 players were likely to be using performance-enhancing drugs.

Almost half of the 706 players involved in the survey, which was distributed by the Professional Footballers' Association (PFA), admitted they knew of a team-mate or opponent in English football taking recreational drugs.

Waddington undertook a restudy, again with the co-operation of the PFA, in 2011 - with 394 footballers responding. Again, players indicated there was knowledge of banned substances being used in the game, and 27% said they knew of a fellow professional footballer in England taking recreational drugs.

There have been players banned for drug taking. I follow football, so I do know what I am talking about.

I'm just going to raise one more point - logistics. 14 players on each team would have to be tested. There are 20 teams in the premier league. That would mean 280 tests after each match, and remember some weeks the teams play twice a week. How far down the league would you have to go to ensure the game is clean? It could quite quickly escalate to thousands of tests in just the English leagues. I don't think any testing facility would cope.

You follow football so you know what you talking about! I’m off to get my degree in Astro physics then cus I’ve looked at the stars a few times. The quote I gave you was from an official investigation - not from someone that watches a few matches.

If you followed it well you would know that the German league have done exactly as you just detailed to be impossible - they realised it had got out of control and did something about it in 2015 - however they still struggling to achieve it with fact that fines for avoiding tests etc are pathetic and no repucssions for doing so.

The numbers for athletics, cycling etc are all high numbers. WADA produced numbers higher than the FA - and FIFA would admit to.

Football has the highest known use of recreational drugs - and unfortunately they naff at testing for the ones that really should be done for which is PED, and the new strain of stimulants that are hard to detect. A number of high profile players have spoken out about it, and managers have stated that players they’ve have from other teams on arrival at their medicals have abnormal blood readings.

There token ones who been caught - and often then covered up or no real punishment. Unlike other sports. Which equally have tougher limits on the substances.

It’s not just football, rugby also have the same issue. The problem is other sports have or are trying to do something about it - football unfortunately is more about money and sponsorship than it is about the sport - and corruption across the FA, FIFA and UEFA - and the large scale issue it’s become means everyone to scared to do anything about it.
