"Is Anybody Calm "

I’ve gotta say I’m a bit pissed off .

The first 45 minutes we were well on top , and then .... nothing .

Kane is the top scorer in the tournament and yet he’s playing deep in midfield tonight , and has barely touched the ball , and had no shots . Wtf is that all about ? And Rashford is worse than useless since he came on .....

The fact that Kane has played out of position , Lingard has been crap , Sterling has been Sterling , and Rashford has been crap , has shown us that we were flattering to deceive up to this game .

We had the better of the first half , and were well on top . Since then , shite , especially Kane . Maybe he’s injured and we didn’t know ?

You've lasted to the penultimate day. The amount of teams I've seen in league football come close one year only to return and make the final step next time.

We will never get a better chance than we had this time .

Croatia were the first half decent team we faced , and we gave it away .

That’s as good as it’s going to get I’m afraid , so let’s carry on doing the English thing and say how well they did and how proud we are . I certainly wasn’t proud of that second half and extra time , not one bit .

And finally someone else noticed that Kane was playing way too deep , why would you do that ?

That was our biggest mistake , playing him as a midfielder .

Up north!

Proud of the entire campaign. 1st half England were outstanding (particularly Henderson, alli, trippier & sterling)

Half time they changed, pushed full backs on & forced us back. The only thing we could possibly have done differently is gone 4-5-1, walker to right back, young/rose left back. Trippier right wing & move someone out left & take sterling off as we couldn't get him in the game - prob rashford/possibly even delph could've gone wide left but not natural position. This would've stopped vrsaljko getting space but could've left Kane isolated.

Overall Gareth Southgate has conducted himself brilliantly. We should be proud, we gave a world class team a good run for their money but just couldn't make it over the line.

Can't we have 7/8 play off today

6/5 play off tomorrow?

Wouldn't be too much to ask.

I hope Croatia have something left in them come Sunday as I'd hate to see a one sided game but can't see it any other way. France just seem too quick.

Experience of Croatia won it against the Inexperience of a young England side, but this side will win things in the near future, it was a good learning curve for them. The future looks good under the Waistcoat . #ProudLion

I hope they remember the pain. I'm sure they can use it for future tournaments. I've seen it spur so many teams on but that's usually in club football the very next season

England will never will a major tournament

That was by far your best ever chance

You won't get a draw as good again

Football just isn't your sport

Accept that

I disagree. It wasn’t experience that won them the game it was a hell of a lot of generosity from the ref. They were throwing elbows every time we got into the box, cropping our last man a few times and purposely wasting extra time by having their older players bullying our young lads.

I’m proud of how we played I’m just bitterly disappointed that they were awarding corners as goal kicks and blatantly disregarding the visual proof that the technology provides. To me it was a shambles in that respect.

England lost because they didn't take their chances and switched off when they shouldn't. It's that simple.

Croatia didn't do much until the 65th minute. England could of/should of wrapped it up in the first half.

He we go with the same old excuses

There was no dirty play there last night apart from a bit of time wasting that's part of the game

You didn't progress because you didn't deserve too

The best team won. They made some chances from play and took them when it mattered

I think the next Euros and WC will be even better.

Look at the big countries that went out and those that didn't get there.

New look Germany, Spain, Italy, Holland, Brazil, Argentina, Portugal. There's going to be some pretty big overhauls in those countries.

Not all of them but I expect most to come back bigger and better.

We survived Columbia, I'm sure mummy's little soldiers can handle it. Our attacking play was dire. It wasn't the elbows that were the problem, it was the fact that it was generally 2 England forwards against 5 defenders in the box.

Kane should of scored from 12" out or passed it for an open goal. He then missed a header with a minute to go.

Stones shouldn't of switched off, Walker shouldn't of been beaten to that ball.

It's small margins

I'll give it a damned good go

England have a young team and a young manager, which can only be good, they are not classed as the "Golden Generation", and have given it the best that they can.

As I said in another thread, a big up to all the players and management, I know all the other teams will be looking to move on and improve, but we now hve a sound base for the future under Southgate's tenure I believe

Indeed, on balance they less mistakes like this than we did. As a rule of thumb, you need to take 9 shots for 1 goal. We had 11 shots, they had 22. They won 2-1. No complaints here.

If england had of went out creating a few chances or played exciting football that would be one thing but they didnt

Goals from set pieces are good but not when that's all you have

Next tournament every team will be drilled on what to do for your line of players for corners and the like

Just calling it England's luck of the draw is doing a massive disservice to the teams that played them. Colombia - good, strong side with a very physical nature. Sadly they chose not to go toe-to-toe with England but just kick them off the park. This is a side who knocked out a good Senegal team, yes we'd expect England to be up there with them, but a win is far from guaranteed.

Sweden - we completely outplayed them. This is the same Sweden side that matched Germany and should've really come away with something from that game, then absolutely stuffed Mexico, who again are an impressive, fit and energetic side.

Croatia, strong organised defence, with arguably the best international midfield in the world. They've proven they're easily a better team than Germany, Spain, Argentina etc in this world cup.

We'll see on Sunday, but I believe they'll give France 1 hell of a game. Their midfield is better, it's just a question of whether Kante can keep Modric out the game and then can Croatia deal with Mbappe's pace. I'd be surprised if it's as one sided as people have been suggesting, I've seen numerous people saying it's a foregone conclusion and will be at least 4 or 5-0!

You can only beat what's put in front of you and England did that.

Out of interest, as football isn't England's sport (we have a fair bit of competition from other sports that we seem to do alright in) what is Scotland's sport?

Well done on them. If anything it's a little flatter but you wouldn't know they have just lost a semi final

I have no idea

I'm irish

All our best athletes play gaa

Haha, apologies I read it as kilbride not kildare.

Maybe what you've said sums it up, a sport that pretty much only you guys play (nothing wrong with that, but hardly gives you ground to mock others who are outperforming you by far in pretty much every sport going).

Maybe sport just isn't your thing... accept that

We play soccer ball too and punch well above our weight its just not that important to us

We take our gaa and rugby seriously here we only play football for the craic

Were you not shit at rugby until the English boys took over your mob and started telling them how to play the game? "

They should have stayed at home and helped you guys and we mightn't have hammered you on the way to our grand slam this year

I have no idea but I hope you guys are at least good at cricket?

"England will never will a major tournament

That was by far your best ever chance

You won't get a draw as good again

Football just isn't your sport

Accept that

Come on who's going to bite the hardest

I'll give it a damned good go

England have a young team and a young manager, which can only be good, they are not classed as the "Golden Generation", and have given it the best that they can.

As I said in another thread, a big up to all the players and management, I know all the other teams will be looking to move on and improve, but we now hve a sound base for the future under Southgate's tenure I believe

Bring on the Krauts

All this talk of this just being the start of big things to come is ignoring how much England's luck of the draw played in them getting this far. First decent team they met and out

Punch well above your weight?! It's your most popular sport participant wise (gaa beats it as an attended spectator sport as you have a poor football league). You didn't reach the world cup - many would say you underachieved.

Then you mention rugby - after telling us that going out in the semi finals of the football world cup (in a far more competitive sport that really is played worldwide) shows that it's 'just not our sport'.

Well let me just clarify as I'm unsure on this but... when did Ireland last win the rugby world cup? To take it further, when did they last make the semi finals of a rugby world cup?

Maybe it's just not your sport, accept that!

Gaa is the most played sports in our country by far not just spectators

They are played and supported fanatically

From villages to inner city Dublin and north and south its the only thing we all agree on just some say hurling is the best sport in the world others say Gaelic football is

The other sports have to compete against that for players and we are to only ad big as Manchester in the first place

Considering all that I think we punch above our weight in foreign sports

I hate to say this as my point was never to slate Irish sport, merely to show English sport deserves a bit more credit but...you're wrong.

Football (soccer) is by far the most played sport in Ireland, all the stats show this.

Then in terms of size - I presume we're talking population?

Unless you've lost a few million people somewhere then you're a LOT bigger than Manchester as a city. If we're talking the area of Greater Manchester which encompasses a number of other large towns and cities, then it's a bit closer, but still a long way off. Also, Greater Manchester hasn't done too badly at providing sportsmen and women (it pains me to say that as a Yorkshireman).

Speaking of Yorkshire, that'd be a more fair comparison - granted, we're slightly bigger. In that case you might be really struggling as Yorkshire sport is thriving - I dare say if we were our own (Fifa) nation we'd probably be above Ireland with the players we're producing at the moment, we wouldn't have done too badly as a stand alone nation at the olympics (above Ireland I believe), even provide winter olympians and then there are other sports such as rugby league where we have a number of good teams and players.

So no, Ireland aren't doing too badly, in fact they're quite impressive. Just not as impressive as say...England at the moment.

Well that's exactly my point

Its more realistic comparing yourself to little old Ireland and the like of us than thinking ridiculously that you have a chance of winning the WC and every other tournament you enter yet time after time put out overhyped shit teams that go nowhere

You are a second rate team like us and Scotland et el and the Frances and Brazil's and Spain's of this world are on a while different level than us

But having said that this is the best English team I've seen and they done well

Which generally is the case - at the start of this tournament many predicted group stage exit, with nobody suggesting we'd even get close to a semi final. The fact is we overperformed and exceeded expectations.

The difference is, when we punch above our weight we come close to a world cup (yes this time we were genuinely close). Ireland punch above their weight and make the play offs.

Anyone who knows football knows England did better than many of the nations you mention, putting us in their category. To say we're not in Spain's category - come on! People are too persuaded by a big name. Look at Argentina - a very poor team. If I was Icelandic I'd be bitterly disappointed that they went out to a team that is worse than them. People say 'But Messi, aguero, higuain' clearly don't understand the game. It's a team sport. The best individuals don't win, the best team does. Argentina are currently a poor poor team, not even close to England.

Spain are not currently as good as England as they are too predictable and toothless in attack.

Germany are a shadow of their former selves with the weight of expectation on them and poor mix of players who have little energy or again penetration.

Uruguay - very good team. Outstanding defence, great in attack, lacking in midfield. Cavani injury played a huge part as they have little back up. England are at a similar level to them.

Portugal - poor side, relying on 1 player, proving it's a team game. Not as good as England.

So looking at it, the teams better than England at the moment - Belgium, France, Croatia, Brazil. That's not bad for someone who should be comparing to 'little old Ireland'. So can we dare to dream - yes. Should we dare to dream - yes. Should Ireland dream of winning the rugby world cup - yes!

It's as unlikely as England's winning the football world cup but it's not unrealistic. I'd love to see you do it - of England go out I'd support you all the way - it just seems odd the way the English are hated so much in sport!

I agree in some respects but that's the same for England (cricket, rugby league, rugby union, swimming, athletics etc etc etc all take potential football players away)

I don't think you have a poor football team, they're pretty good! But when someone Irish mocks England its like a Leeds fan mocking man utd fans for going out in the champions league semi final and saying they should just accept they're crap. That would be ridiculous.

In comparison to population size we're 25th biggest country in the world. Keeping in mind other sports, history, participation within those countries etc you'd expect us to be roughly top 10. I'd say we're usually exactly where we should be, but this time we overperformed and did well.

Fucking delighted it's over. This will be my last post in the world cup thread and I will now claim I'm done with football till it starts getting dark late October-ish, when I begin to start to like it again. This is the only pattern that will allow me to get anything done.

If anybody mentions football in the next 3 months I will physically attack them with the paving slabs that have been patiently waiting for me to stop swearing at the box and start swearing at my squashed thumb . Switching off any footage of Are Brave Lions™ getting a hero's welcome. It's only a game, get over your fucking selves.

MARFRIG AND OUT.

I was glad to read Southgate saying that as yet England haven’t beaten any of the top teams In competitive open play since he’s been in charge . Which has been my point throughout , and what makes a nonsense of all this talk of heroes and so on .

Of course they did their best , despite the noteable absence of Harry Kane in the last two games . And their best wasn’t enough when they faced the first half decent team they played .

If Belgium want to win later , they will , and by a country mile . If they don’t , they will probably still win but maybe just 2-1 or 1-0 .

However , if Kane is fit and plays like he did in the first two games we may get a result , but only if Belgium can’t be arsed to try .

Agreed, but Southgate seems to be talking like he knows the score and maybe with a few younger players coming through and with the benefit of the experience they can move forward and improve in the euros

I'm impressed by southgate saying that

There's hope for him

Didn't see the match but their still the best all round English team I've seen in my time

Maybe credit to southgate for seeing they didn't have that creativity and done well with what they had from set pieces

If you can get just one player with that bit extra that's a very different team

World Cup Final (today)

I'm going to miss it but with a game every few days for the last week or so it kind of ended already.

France to win I think.

Too much pace and after an hour I reckon Croatia will start to tire.

As always though, a good game and extra time would be superb.

Good luck Croatia, what an achievement just to get there.
