"Columbo. Nothing comes close. Magnificent. Timeless. Fantastic character played so brilliantly by Peter Falk."
But there was always just one more thing... |

"Saga Noren "
That's a very good call. It's great when someone creates a new and unique kind of character. The genre's full of cliches but she stands out like a sore thumb as someone totally original. |

"Columbo would turn up and find a clue just sitting there, even though the police had been all through the place. Often waving a cigar around while he did so "
'Preserving a crime scene' was never that important in Columbo's world! Who cares about a bit of cigar ash and trampling around a crime scene?! He didn't even mind a bit of entrapment as well if the case called for it. He also never wasted time on other suspects either. He instinctively knew who'd done it and would immediately home in on them without ever considering anyone else.
To be fair the joy of Columbo was watching him wear down the murderer. The unique part of the show of course being that we knew who'd done it right at the beginning of each episode. Watching how Columbo then went about solving these seemingly perfect murders was what the show was all about. |

There and to the left a bit |
Saga Noren as already mentioned is definitely up there - such a well observed character
Other than her I'd give votes to Morse (intelligent TV at it's best) and sticking with John Thaw an honourable mention for Jack Regan
The three main characters in possibly the best British police procedural - Line Of Duty - have to be up there too.
Interestingly and it may have prompted this thread - this week's Radio Times is devoted to the results of a poll for the Top 50 TV detectives |

Jessica Fletcher was pretty good on the case......although I’m quite sure that she herself would be a person of interest to the authorities as everywhere she turned up, a murder inevitably followed |

Having looked through the Radio Times list (which was actually Top 50 British Crime Dramas not individual detectives) a few more to mention that I don't think have been named yet:
Luther - super cool and gritty
Lewis - picked up neatly where Morse left off
Ales Hardy/Ellie Miller - Broadchurch
Catherine Cawood - Happy Valley - ok not a detective but still a compelling character
And one other I just remembered Stella Gibson (The Fall) tough as nails yet vulnerable at the same time |
