Who remembers certain television programmes that used to be broadcast many years ago before watershed that were scary as hell?
I know a couple but they never scared me as these were way before my time known as Tales of the Unexpected and Armchair Thriller.
The first time I saw these was on Channel 4's 100 Greatest Scary Moments which showed clips of an episode of each show which were TOTU's Royal Jelly and AT's Quiet as a Nun. Both episodes sure were creepy especially with the guy sort of turning into a bee and the faceless nun in the attic.
There is one episode I did find disturbing from TOTU were the it reveals that the landlady has been turning her guests into human taxidermists. The thought of how she does it still makes me shudder.

I loved TotU. I still read and watch them quite often. Parson's Pleasure is one of my favourites.
Probably not pre-watershed but Hammer House of Horror used to scare the pants off me

I have a recreated version of the theme on the 100 Halloween Hits album. It's funny how it sounds light and sort of happy which I think was the intention so that it catches you off guard when a scary moment pops up. |

The opening credits and music for tales of the unexpected scared me. But what gave me nightmares was ghostwatch a one of halloween special on bbc for most of the show we thought it was real.
Before that there was a kids TV show with Fenella the Kettle Witch from Chorlton and the Wheelies
And the banana splits scared me.
Saying that looking back on Jamie and his magic touch opening credits looks like it was filmed on LSD |

I remember that show, I thought it was well done.
I remember the court case too about the suicide. There was more to it than just a previously fine kid commiting suicide but the BBC got a public rap from the BSC as it went out before 9pm and wasn't clear about being fictional. |

I remember that show, I thought it was well done.

Another one off TV programme which I’ll never forget as a child (because it scared the absolute shit out of me!) was a ghostly investigation of Borley Church (the infamous rectory having previously burnt down many years prior).
The film crew set up audio equipment in the church itself overnight and the resulting recordings when played back revealed what sounded like an old man groaning. Bullshit? - most likely, but as creepy as fuck! |

Children of the stones, it was supposed to be a kids program but scared the crap out of me. There was one on bbc called The changes where all the adults started smashing up the machinery. When I was a little older The tripods was on a Saturday teatime, that was more than a little sinister. |

And yet another one if anyone else can recall it as I can’t for the life of me remember the title: This was a four part series (as I best recall) set on a remote Scottish Island wherein a mysterious crashed craft is discovered which coincides with a series of brutal murders. All I remember was that it featured the killers eye view (a heavy red filter) whenever ‘it’ claimed another victim and I think it starred a very young Celia Emery (looking mighty fine as I recall might I add!) |

Just watched an episode of Tales of The Unexpected on Sky Arts called The Hitchhiker. Very interesting episode.
I had a look on search and found that Sky Arts shows two episodes each day at 10am and 3pm. |

That was BBC and Ghostwatch. Mr Pipes. Sarah Greene. Mike Smith and Michael Parkinson "hosting". It was broadcast then instantly banned. Although you can get the DVD. Watched it at the time (think I was about 14) and again about 4 years ago on DVD. Utter shite.
Maelstrom - wax dolls - mad sister - rabid dogs. Fire in the end and all the dolls melting. Now that WAS scary. |

The only bit I remember about Ghostwatch is when the face started to appear on the monitors.
Dr Who has to get a mention surely. I grew up watching John Pertwee and Tom Baker and some episodes did genuinely scare me. |

There was something I watched when I was a kid that had me shrieking in tears involving a scene where a kid is standing by fire in one scene and in the next, the kid is screaming while on fire. I can't recall if that was an episode of Casualty or London's Burning. |

999 was always a good watch. I do recall people saying how the intro used to scare them as kids and I can understand why. The music is basically the classic nee naa from ambulances and the intro itself is almost apocalyptic with buildings on fire, people being rescued from raging rivers and ambulances driving fast like they're in a war zone. |

Also does anyone remember the sister series, Hammer House Of Mystery & Suspense? There was a freaky episode wherein a family find themselves trapped in their house as the temperature keeps rising. The final twist was that the family were in fact dolls in a doll house all along and that a kid had put the house in an oven to piss off his little sister |

The Pertwee era especially, boasts the scariest episodes in the entire series for me (The Daemons, Inferno, The Sea Devils etc.) and is helped immeasurably by the BBC Radiophonic Workshop’s highly weird and wonderful soundscapes |

That sounds very similar to a Twilight Zone episode where a soldier, a clown, a ballerina, a hobo and a scotsman were trapped in a circular cell and the twist was they were actually dolls in a Christmas toy donation bin. |

That one was filmed just near me

I remember another Japanese remake a while back which featured a cameo from the original Monkey himself, Masaaki Sakai who it transpired never found the fabled location he spent years trekking to find and was instead, living on a mountain, still as grumpy as ever |

I remember that one. There was an episode with these space spiders that had human faces. They looked so creepy but reminded me of the submarine Grampus from the classic kids programme Tugs. |

I loved the X-Files series 1-9 but was more than a tad disappointed with it’s recent two series return. Gillian Anderson has stated she won’t be back so the show seems to have been shelved indefinitely now

"999 was always a good watch. I do recall people saying how the intro used to scare them as kids and I can understand why. The music is basically the classic nee naa from ambulances and the intro itself is almost apocalyptic with buildings on fire, people being rescued from raging rivers and ambulances driving fast like they're in a war zone."

I loved that show. It never scared me but I can see why seeing that some of the characters especially Zelda do look pretty scary.
There was one character on the show that I thought looked creepy called M.O.I.D with a face resembling a skull covered in wrinkled skin but I felt really sorry for him as he says himself that he has no face and very little will of his own. |

BBC made a fake documentary with Mike Smith and Sarah green early 90s went out supposedly live on Halloween, it was about polterguist and ended suddenly when they portrayed spirit had taken over the camera by getting into it, if they hadn't rolled credits after a short pause I don't think I would have watched TV again |

Scared the crap out of me, would love to revisit it and see what the fuss was about. Was in the days of three channels so about 79-80 ish, but don't know what it was called. Any ideas peeps |

An honourable mention also of a 1970’s pre-runner of the X-Files, namely, Kolchak: The Night Stalker starring Darren McGavin (who later appeared in a few episodes of the X-Files).
I think there were two films and a series based around McGavin’s, skeptical yet resolute titular character of Carl Kolchak. |

The first time I saw these was on Channel 4's 100 Greatest Scary Moments which showed clips of an episode of each show which were TOTU's Royal Jelly and AT's Quiet as a Nun. Both episodes sure were creepy especially with the guy sort of turning into a bee and the faceless nun in the attic.
There is one episode I did find disturbing from TOTU were the it reveals that the landlady has been turning her guests into human taxidermists. The thought of how she does it still makes me shudder.

I know a couple but they never scared me as these were way before my time known as Tales of the Unexpected and Armchair Thriller.
The first time I saw these was on Channel 4's 100 Greatest Scary Moments which showed clips of an episode of each show which were TOTU's Royal Jelly and AT's Quiet as a Nun. Both episodes sure were creepy especially with the guy sort of turning into a bee and the faceless nun in the attic.
There is one episode I did find disturbing from TOTU were the it reveals that the landlady has been turning her guests into human taxidermists. The thought of how she does it still makes me shudder.
