Discuss please, He's awesome for City but I just don't get why he keeps on getting chances for England when Vady and Rashford in my eyes are far superior for England |

I don't rate him, He does get involved, drops off deep and makes a lot of runs but most of it comes to nothing,
He may not score with his 1st - 2nd - 3rd or even 4th chance, But he will get there in the end |

As a Liverpool fan I’ve got plenty to dislike him for... but I don’t think the system England play helps him at all, he’s being played as a number 10 to Kane’s 9, although he’s better as a wide player cutting in from the wing at pace |

"Please, what did lingard, alli or trippier do today? The entire midfield was shite until loftus-cheek came onI thought Trippier was great "
He kept crossing at ground height and they were easily cleared. |

When you're trying to beat the best teams in the world you need the best player you have in all positions... his club manager doesn't see him as a ten..plays him wide... if he's the best we have as a ten we'll struggle against better teams |

I'm not a football fan, maybe he did things i didn't appreciate. But the whole team seemed devoid of any actual attacking strategy and so none of the midfield seemed good to me. Loftus-cheek did well when he came on. |

I was about to start athread on exactly this subject . Especially after Southgate said he played well . All I can say is he must have been watching a different game to me .
Sterling is a lucky fucker to play in the Man City team , and even a cardboard cut out could score for them . He’s not that great even when in that team , he misses so many clear cut chances .
If he gets another start in this World Cup I seriously reckon we will crash out . He’s completely useless .
Lingard was shit too , and I wouldn’t play him either . Strangely Southgate thought he played well too . |

I think Sterling and Lingard both did alright. Tough game in difficult conditions against a team that just wanted to defend and did so pretty well.
It's a shame football fans always have to find one or two players to single out and focus their hate on. |

Sterling was awful. He just runs with the ball until he comes to a defender then panics and gives it away. Plays so much better for City but on the international stage he bottles it. Thought Tripper played well, created a lot of chances. Young should be dropped for Rose. He must be the easiest player at the World Cup to defend against. You know he will always cut back onto his right foot so simply show him down the line and wait. Overall though, a good win with some positives. |

I thought lingaard tried his heart out and that's all I ask, at least he never stopped trying all night especially after a heavy knock. Alli was gone after 40 minutes with a dead leg, I suppose he only stayed on as nobody can replace him |

Did you watch the game ?
Universally he got a terrible rating averaging 5 / 10 so the fact that the majority of posters agreeing with the op isn’t really surprising is it’s? |

It is well know I have a large dislike for both Liverpool and city players but this is the national team in a World Cup. Get behind ALL the players. Yes he didn’t have a great game. However don’t crucify the lad.
There will be games where other players may have an off day or not perform
Anyway. Southgate’s barmy army!!!!

I’m old enough to remember when we actually won the World Cup , and I can assure you that emotional responses such as ‘ don’t crucify the lad ‘ when he’s had a stinker didn’t exist back then . He would have been dropped and replaced because it would have been the best thing for the team . The fact is that he’s consistently poor when playing for England and that’s a fact .
But I’m totally with you on Southgates barmy army |

Yeah, I thought he did alright, not brilliant obviously. A 6/10 kinda performance. Not worth the hate he seems to be getting. |

The BBC gave him 5/10
The general public gave him 4/10
But that’s cool if you think it was a 6/10 . |

It's a completely subjective opinion, not a scientific argument

And regardless of rating, the way people are talking you'd think he'd scored two own goals, missed a penalty, and broken Harry Kane's leg. The obsessive need for football fans to have someone to hate on their own team is bizarre and childish. |

Yeah that's fair enough!
I just think it's silly some people calling him a twat or saying that he's lucky to play for Man City. Pep doesn't play people who aren't up to it, look at how he binned Joe Hart immediately. |

I don’t hate him , I think his performances in an England shirt are abysmal .
What’s bizarre and childish is to try and defend the indefensible . No one , even staunch City fans can get their heads round why he is so poor for England . |

"Both goal came from set piece and looks like other team will predict that soon, unless Garath has diff tactics for corner, we can't score anymore. "
57% of all goals scored so far have been from set pieces.
Re. Sterling, no end product, too many fancy touches, flicks and back heels in the wrong place wrong time that don't come off.
Ali was the same.....
Henderson spent more time heading towards England's goal than the opposition.
We started well, maybe too well and ran out of steam.
Game management needs to improve.

Bless him it’s just the way with some footballers my team not saying who they are have brought 3 strikers who scored lots before and after but could not hit a barn door for my team
On a serious note could be city play a different way that suits him |

In theory it's quite simple.
Pick your playing style and decide your formation.
Then pick the players for that style and position.
Then, play them there.
*Do not ask me where I finished in The Telegraph Fantasy Football last season.... |

"Is it just me who thinks he's got a run like 'Phoebe' in Friends
I think she would be a better finisher than him to be honest "
I'm not seeing what the pundits seem to be seeing when it comes to him.
Surely if he's put in the side as a striker to support Harry....score some goals.
I'm certain he's not been put in to 'pull players away from Harry with his runs'.
Little twat will score 25 for Man' City next season no doubt. |

I was slating him for most of the tournament. Then started paying attention to his runs and creating space and mellowed. Now I'm back to thinking he shouldnt be in an England shirt. Cant finish, final ball is poor and gives the ball away far too much. |

"I was texting my mate all night about this twat. Keep him at city,he's the new John Barnes, Mark my word he'll never do it for England unless pep is manager"
Barnes was a winger (who could cross and pass), scored 11 times in 79 games, countless assists for linker. Wonder goal against Brazil, world cup semi and consistent.... Not a striker, which is how Stirling is being utilised. No comparison really |
