Why I wear a poppy

Jump to: Newest in thread

By (user no longer on site) OP     over a year ago

Why do I wear a poppy?

I’ll tell you if I may,

Because I believe remembrance is... not only for one day.

I wear it for the fallen, and for those falling still

For those who come back broken in body or in will.

For the parents, spouses, siblings where bereavement takes its toll.

Whose pain will never leave them, It eats into their soul

For the wino on the corner, Of his old...life nothing’s left.

Now he wishes when in battle he had died a hero’s death.

For the lad who loved a kick-about in the park with all his mates,

But now his legs are held together with pins and metal plates

For the selfless men and women whose final journey home

Is in a Union flag-draped coffin on comrades’ shoulders borne.

For all those marching proudly In Remembrance Day parades

My poppy’s worn in gratitude for the sacrifice they made

xxx

We respect people who fought and died for their country - the soldiers are not the people who decide to go to war generally in the first place, this is an inane statement! Z

surely it is the act of giving that matters, not the act of wearing?

I wear a poppy because I am happy to show my support for the armed forces, they do an amazing job, so that we have the freedom to chose to display the very emblem of our choice.

It is a symbol of respect for those that didn't make it.

,

i buy,and my children buy them at school,but i no longer wear mine as i feel uncomfortable with the groups who have tried to hijack the wearing of the poppy such as the edl

i buy because the support for soldiers and ex soldiers is vital and needs to continue.

Well i am intieled to my belief systems thank you very much, and you have but only touched on a slightest part of them! I do respect the indervidgual currage and i do feel sorry for familys who are apart or worried, that although being the same issue isn't as direct as the original question! you see, i don't believe the war is needed, i don't believe in all this terrism stuff, infact i think ron paul's who ran for american office a few years ago was spot on wth tis subject, and the truth is we start the wars not the terrorists! But do we want to talk semantics? I dn't respect the need for a war and i would hope people that go to fight in these wars would research all possible reasons for war before fighting in them, although they don't, they just do what they are told.. So it's easy to lose a little respect for that reason, again though... i completely respect the currage and i completely feel sorry for any family who loses a loved one in any situation at all, ever!

like you said, i don't want an argument, but I am allowed my opinion... & my opinion does go alot further into the subject than i have just stated.

I think that most people will agree that it would be better all round not to have wars at all, but in reality they're going to happen as human beings will inevitably be in conflict - that's how we've managed to evolve etc - however, we do need to respect the brave men and women who fight for their country - not for their own betterment. War is a grim reality, but the best innovations etc have come about because of war. Z

The poppy is a small humble token of REMEMBRANCE that the public choose to wear with pride for those who have fallen and shed their blood ....... It's not to glory in wars lost or won, for fights over bits of earth.

Many have given their lives. For others, for their loved ones, for the generations to come, in the hope that they never have to face those same horrors.

Wars kill civilians, old people, women children and serving personnel.

I wear the poppy for all of them.

Its all well and good spending £1 or so once a year but there are many Ex servicemen out there who are still in the land of the living some with physical injuries some with mental scars. Wearing a little red flower doesn’t give you absolution and if you really care and not just want to be seeing to care do something more committed about it and contribute monthly to the many charities out there.

Oh ADSR you have a point war isn’t the answer and it is wired we respect people for killing another man but even in 2011 with some people its the only answer to preserve liberty.

I wear my poppy with the utmost pride for my little grandad, who at the tender age of 17 was fighting for the freedom of his people until he was blown up and disfigured at the battle of the Somme, He made it home and we still have his letters. So my nan got her husband but lost ALL of her brothers. LEST WE FORGET !!!!!!!! God bless them all x

I wear a poppy to honour those who put their lives on the line to make UK the safe and democratic place it is. Some of those brave people pay the highest price.

Wearing a poppy and being silent on the 11th hour, 11th day of 11th month is a very very very small price to pay

We should treat our armed service men and women far better than we do !!!

The poppy is also a symbol of Peace...as well as remembrance of the fallen and support to living..

Some wear the white poppy to complement the red one..

The poppy to some also serves to symbolise the futility of war....writings by soldiers in the trenches of WW1 and their war poetry..makes that clear..

The sad fact is every country has enemies. Pacifism, whilst desirabe, ignores the fact there are hostile nations out there. If we did not have the means to fight Hitler then we'd all be speaking German now.

If we have no deterent then we're sitting ducks

Count me in on that opinion too, they should get a lot better looked after once they leave the armed service than they do, no matter what the reason is they have left. This country dont do HALF it should, a lot of the homeless single men on the streets are ex service men, because the council wont even give them a roof over their head, is it their fault they have lived in a block or a Military house and not been on a coincil list. This is to name only one problem a lot have once they leave. This country in a lot of ways should hang its head in shame for how they treat ex service men.

But Yehhh wear your Poppy with pride x

I understand the human condition...

The thread was becoming one dimensional...

The poppy means different things to different people..

I`ve a service family, that have seen plenty of active service..

I wear my poppy with many thoughts running thru my mind......but respect those with rational beliefs, that inform their decision not too..

Why do I wear a poppy?

Because I believe remembrance is... not only for one day.

I wear it for the fallen, and for those falling still

I always find these discussion's rather ammusing. ADSR, if thats your opinion, then thats your right, and the fact that you live in a free country means you have that right. And you know what, you don't even have to thank me for it.

Should we wear a poppy for those who died fighting for freedom, well no, not really. Most of those we are remembering, includeing those who died in WW2 were not fighting for freedom. Were those who died in kenya, malaya, Suez fighting for freedom. No, they fought to maintain the hold of the Empire. So lets not get to carried away about that. But when we join, we do keep this country safe and free, as well as bring aid and help to others in the world.

Should we feel sorry for those serving in places like Afghan. Well no, we are all volunteers and if any don't want to be there, then they should leave.

But by wearing a poppy, you can show your respect for those who have died or been injured, in the service of this country, and thats a worthy enough cause.

Male half typeing this just in case anyone is confused.

O, and one more thing. I find all this support for the forces very synical. Where was it back in the 90's when we were nothing but scum. This country has a habit of treating its soldiers like heros when theres a war on, but shunning them when peace times comes.

In 1892 Kipling wrote a poem called Tommy Aitkins. And its as vaild now as it was then. When the war in Afghan is over, the support will dissapear. Frankly, i wish you would just stop jumping on our backs and useing us as a means to show how patrioric you are or an excuse to bash the goverment.

Kidderminster+ surrounding areas.

some people seem to be under the impression that because you belong to a different political party or organisation and wear a poppy that you have hi jacked it for some reason?,not so!,we all wear the poppy to remember those that gave their lives to protect this country and in doing so gave us the freedom to express our _iews.

may god bless them all.

People support football teams, they buy the teams shirt to support them, pay to see the games at their ground for a season and buy tickets to support the team and its players and no-one bats an eyelid.

Buy a poppy and donate a couple of quid to support your country and the people who put their lives on the line to protect us and others and look at the chaos it causes

This is so very true, think about it, when else do you give a thought about service men and women and how they are treated etc etc, when there is not a conflict going on?

Who is this group of people you are referring to?.....some people?, most people? all people?

Because not everyone thinks the same and acts the same in life.... some people only spare a thought for our service men and women in times of conflict, so what?...at the same time many do think about these same service men and women on a constant basis.

You can't tar everyone with the same brush in life, however strong your feelings are on the subject.

Well, clearly i am generaliseing, not a good thing i know, but i did it all the same. And its well known how this country treats its service personel. I recall hearing about it when i was young. haveing been in the army since 1990, i have seen it in both peace time (so to speake) and war time.

Never a truer word said...hope you dont mind but im putting up the poem,how many know that the first remembrance day was observed by unemployed soldiers who felt they had been betrayed by the government.i am a pacifist,i give because the tommy atkins of this world will be fucked over again and again and only charities like the Royal British legion support them.

I went into a public-'ouse to get a pint o'beer,

The publican 'e up an' sez, "We serve no red-coats here."

The girls be'ind the bar they laughed an' giggled fit to die,

I outs into the street again an' to myself sez I:

O it's Tommy this, an' Tommy that, an' "Tommy, go away";

But it's ``Thank you, Mister Atkins,'' when the band begins to play,

The band begins to play, my boys, the band begins to play,

O it's ``Thank you, Mr. Atkins,'' when the band begins to play.

I went into a theatre as sober as could be,

They gave a d*unk civilian room, but 'adn't none for me;

They sent me to the gallery or round the music-'alls,

But when it comes to fightin', Lord! they'll shove me in the stalls!

For it's Tommy this, an' Tommy that, an' "Tommy, wait outside";

But it's "Special train for Atkins" when the trooper's on the tide,

The troopship's on the tide, my boys, the troopship's on the tide,

O it's "Special train for Atkins" when the trooper's on the tide.

Yes, makin' mock o' uniforms that guard you while you sleep

Is cheaper than them uniforms, an' they're starvation cheap;

An' hustlin' d*unken soldiers when they're goin' large a bit

Is five times better business than paradin' in full kit.

Then it's Tommy this, an' Tommy that, an' "Tommy how's yer soul?"

But it's "Thin red line of 'eroes" when the drums begin to roll,

The drums begin to roll, my boys, the drums begin to roll,

O it's "Thin red line of 'eroes" when the drums begin to roll.

We aren't no thin red 'eroes, nor we aren't no blackguards too,

But single men in barricks, most remarkable like you;

An' if sometimes our conduck isn't all your fancy paints:

Why, single men in barricks don't grow into plaster saints;

While it's Tommy this, an' Tommy that, an' "Tommy, fall be'ind,"

But it's "Please to walk in front, sir," when there's trouble in the wind,

There's trouble in the wind, my boys, there's trouble in the wind,

O it's "Please to walk in front, sir," when there's trouble in the wind.

You talk o' better food for us, an' schools, an' fires an' all:

We'll wait for extry rations if you treat us rational.

Don't mess about the cook-room slops, but prove it to our face

The Widow's Uniform is not the soldier-man's disgrace.

For it's Tommy this, an' Tommy that, an' "Chuck him out, the brute!"

But it's "Saviour of 'is country," when the guns begin to shoot;

An' it's Tommy this, an' Tommy that, an' anything you please;

But Tommy ain't a bloomin' fool - you bet that Tommy sees!

I respect the wearing of a Poppy and to me it should be in its simpliest form... from the specially manufactured red paper (that is design NOT to run red dye down your clothes on a rainy)... that have been lovingly assemble by the Legion... it make the donation all the more important and thoughtful to my mind

But today every jumped up TV nobody seems to want to wear a "Blinged" up Poppy thats stupidly large and sparkles and just look so disrepectful in my eyes...

There is no glamour in war so why is there a need to bring glamour to the humble symbol of the Poppy... its wrong

lose the sparkle please and go back to basics

I agree totally nice sentiment. I choose to donate always but don!t always wear the poppy, same as when I donate to cancer research I don!t wear pink..it's thoughts and donations that count more than showing..

I wear a poppy because I feel bad for the families. Most of these soldiers are people from poorer backgrounds who join the forces for the hope of a better life when they return...if they return...and in one piece.

What truly p**ses me off is the w**kers in power who send them out there in the first place, fighting wars that don't need to be fought.

Every year i buy a poppy, it sits alongside my armed forces veteran badge.

I wear it for my family members who fought and died. For those who live on with the physical and mental scars.

I wear it for the men and women i spent 6 years serving in The Royal Green Jackets with.

I wear it for the millions who died on every side fighting for distorted political and religous _iews.

I wear it so when our boys and girls return to hate filled streets, they see the red symbol of respect and know that there are still those who look on them as heroes, defenders and brothers in arms.

I once made a casual statement to a friend in a game. But it has stuck with me ever since and become something of a mantra.

Freedom is a gift, paid for with the hearts and souls of heroes.

I will remember

"I won't diss anything because people died, but phhtttt!!!!!!!!!!!! War is not the answer yet we respect people for doing it! What a weird society we live in"

Surely, as long as there are dictators lurking in the world who have this attitude of "i want to rule the world" we may find ourselves fighting for our freedom we currently enjoy and as said before, its why we do have the freedom, the sacrifice of others who not so long ago had no freedom of choice, they had to go to war.

Would be great to think one day there would be no need to.

We agreed privately last night not to duscuss this again. You again gave you _iews knowing it upset so many. Yes if you pick up a gun expect trouble BUT can you not undestand the guys and the girls out there dont want to be there. They are doing it as the government told them too. The men and women of generations have fought for peace.As someone said earlier we could all be speaking German today. There is a message going out at the minute that says if you can read this thank a teacher if you can read it in english thank a soldier!!!

Do you watch the news?? do you see these crazy people of afghanistan? have you seen the things they do?? they send children to soldiers with wheelbarrows etc loaded with bombs to blow them up, that is child as well..these people are crazy. afghanistan aside take gadaffi did he not have to be stopped from making peoples life hell?? still lets bring everyone home (i would love it more than anyone on this earth) lets learn a new language and be ruled by nutters..let them bomb wherever they like in uk, killing hundereds. are you saying that is right??

this is why i wear the poppy..to show my respect for the fallen, thoses still fighting, those mentally and physically scared...for generations of my family i never got to meet cus they fought for mine and your freedom!!!

most people would agree with some of what you have said regarding peace etc but you said what you did in a crass way without giving it much thought imho.

you caused offence and now you look to be backtracking because of the reaction to your posts.

whilst war and conflict are a terrible affair, sometimes as with the 2nd world war they are unavoidable and sadly the only option with the consequenses that follow.

not a huge fan of the post war american foriegn policy strategy tbh but to say that the usa 'created terrorism', is factually wrong and a tad lacking in historical knowledge.

Because stuff like this shouldn't be forgotten :

Anthem For Doomed Youth (Wilfred Owen)

What passing-bells for these who die as cattle?

Only the monstrous anger of the guns.

Only the stuttering rifles' rapid rattle

Can patter out their hasty orisons.

No mockeries now for them; no prayers nor bells;

Nor any voice of mourning save the choirs,

The shrill, demented choirs of wailing shells;

And bugles calling for them from sad shires.

What candles may be held to speed them all?

Not in the hands of boys, but in their eyes

Shall shine the holy glimmers of good-byes.

The pallor of girls' brows shall be their pall;

Their flowers the tenderness of patient minds,

And each slow dusk a drawing-down of blinds.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

An Irish Airman Forsees His Death (WB Yeats)

I know that I shall meet my fate

Somewhere among the clouds above;

Those that I fight I do not hate,

Those that I guard I do not love;

My county is Kiltartan Cross,

My countrymen Kiltartan's poor,

No likely end could bring them loss

Or leave them happier than before.

Nor law, nor duty bade me fight,

Nor public men, nor cheering crowds,

A lonely impulse of delight

Drove to this tumult in the clouds;

I balanced all, brought all to mind,

The years to come seemed waste of breath,

A waste of breath the years behind

In balance with this life, this death.

I think you showed a total lack of respect with your phhtttt!!!!!!!!! Comment ...

The ladies and gents that donate to the rbl poppy appeal don't find this society weird, they may think people that don't support it weird,.. they appreciate what others have done for them and continue to do so,

I'm proud to wear my poppy along with the help for heroes wrist band, I respect and support the brave lads and lasses that serve in the armed forces past present and future, to the fallen and injured you have my deepest gratitude, without their sacrifices this would be a very different world, they have and continue to perform duties that many people wouldn't .

On remembrance Sunday I hope you use the minutes silence to reflect and remember why we fall silent .. ( even if for you its only for the futility of war,)

i just think that comment about the "nice little job and house" was bang out of order

You've got nothing to apologise for, it was started with good intentions. the vast majority of posters realise what the poppy represents and respect those that it looks to help and remember. Z

For me, it is really simple to answer...

for the men and women who in 1 tour of duty will show more bravery and courage than I will in my entire life.

Sadly some don't come home..

and for the ones who come home with a mind destroyed by the sights they saw.

for each one, my utmost respect x

"I respect the wearing of a Poppy and to me it should be in its simpliest form... from the specially manufactured red paper (that is design NOT to run red dye down your clothes on a rainy)... that have been lovingly assemble by the Legion... it make the donation all the more important and thoughtful to my mind

But today every jumped up TV nobody seems to want to wear a "Blinged" up Poppy thats stupidly large and sparkles and just look so disrepectful in my eyes...

There is no glamour in war so why is there a need to bring glamour to the humble symbol of the Poppy... its wrong

lose the sparkle please and go back to basics "

The enamelled and the sparkly Poppies are made for the Royal British Legion and are available in the “Poppy Shop”. It is a shame they have run out or I would have bought one for Mrs R! I particularly like the enamelled ones with the year on them. Think I may start a collection… Shall try to get a wrist band this year (already have a poppy and a car window sticker) I like the idea of wearing it everywhere I go and not having to take it off for anything!

Perhaps if you find the “bling” ones disrespectful, you had better mail the Royal British Legion and tell them!

I wear mine to remember those who have fought in all the wars.

This year I wear mine with pride and the prayer that all my front line boys will come home safe in March.

Ha ha ha.. There is always that, makes good sense to me, but we must make sure the donation is still made every year! I know a guy who used to get out his car poppy every year and is quite proud at how much money he had saved himself!

I did point out that he hasn't saved any money because it is voluntary, but he then said that he looked like he was “paying in”. In my shame, I stole it from his car two years ago and he hasn’t bought another one yet!

Bloody hell, don’t it feel good the get something off ya chest!

we recently drove to Ypres and went to the Menin Gate (if you dont know what it is google it) The last post is sounded every night at 8.00pm for those millions that died in muddy fields never to come home,

We arent "pro war" or "pro politicians"

But its an incrediby moving place that changed our _iews , we will always buy a poppy just to remember those that never came home

incidentally does everyone know why its a poppy thats worn ? no its not because it signifies blood or was the first flower to regrow after the battle stopped ,its from poem written by a soldier at the front and sent home to loved ones . is anyones interested ill put it on here

we have also been to Ypres a cpl of times, visited Tyne Cot and several other cemetries.

Langemark the german cemetry is also deserving of a visit.

they are all immaculate in their upkeep and very moving.

I've been to Arington Cemetry in Washington - that was very moving.

It is still a working cemetary and we witnessed a full military burial procession whilst we were there - the stars and stripes over the coffin carried on a horse drawn gun carriage.

Interestingly, there are 3 tombs of unknown soldiers in the cemetary, but 1 is empty as through DNA testing, they managed to 'name' the airman that was in the Vietnam War tomb.

yes i agree, theres something about the place, when you look up at the walls and see things like Australian battalions nos 45 thru to 65 clearly as one was wiped out they sent another, 46000 soldiers from india who travelled half the globe to just to die you cant help but feel for those men that died in a cold wet muddy field called "Hell"

We met a new zealander who had travelled all this way to find his lost great grandfther in a mss of white tombstones. He told us a third of the male population of that country died there ,, yes a third. I asked him WHY ?? he simply said because they beleived they were fighting for freedom and against tyranny ,,,,,,,,, I asked if he stil thought it was right, without hesitation he said ,, yes,,

I felt very very humble. The least we can do is buy a poppy and give them 2 mins silence of our lives they died to preserve

absolutely agree, the 'new' cemetry in Poperinge has a large amount of 'shot at dawn' graves.

There is one there for a young lad from the West Indies, who when he was shot was 17. Should not even have been there, let alone probably suffering from 'shell shock'.

Sad

I'll wear a poppy on the 11th and on Rememberence Day but I don't agree with people who start wearing them in October.

And also I don't agree with the mass wearing of them such as on the BBC where you may as well be dead rather than be seen on air without one on.

I'd feel a hypocrite demonstrating how much I 'care' for our armed forces when if I really 'cared' I would sign up and fight alongside the brave men and women who do.

So, I am proud to wear my poppy on the days I have said and will continue to respect my country in learning about its history but count me out of wearing a poppy just because it is the 'done thing'.

Kidderminster+ surrounding areas.

i read that the english football association wanted to wear a poppy badge sewn onto the shirts jfor the game on saturday but the international body FIFA would not allow it,they even had to ask for permission to have a minutes silence before the hame to remeber the fallen in conflicts throughout the world.

how wrong is that?.

For the fact that we are on fab? Wear a poppy

For the fact you can say it how you want? Wear a poppy

For the fact that you don't fear the govt coming to abscond you in the middle of the night? Wear a poppy

It's not about warmongering it's about men and women who have sacrificed (lives,limbs and minds) to keep the world a more democratic place

I'm not brave or selfless enough to do their job so I salute them with a paltry poppy!! We should all thank our armed forces more than we do
