Watching BBC4's Bowie night and, amongst some admittedly great stuff there's a helluva lot of crap.
Is Bowie overrated? Or if not, is he prone to utter tosh more often than some lesser artists?

Alot of Bowie seems awful now.
At the time though, it seemed totally cutting edge and ridiculously cool.
Not much has stood the test of time, but, spiders from Mars is a truly classic album, as is young Americans. And transformer. |

Yes, that's true, but Aladin Sane, Ziggy and The Thin White Duke are incredible "periods" which all had some crap. And were followed by mostly crap IMHO.  |

Thanks to your post, I'm just after catching the end of the show. It all seemed pretty good to me.....think the show was only an hour long, so I imagine they would have stuck mainly to his biggest hits? (of which there were plenty)

Anything post 1990. Most post 1983.
There was a couple of shows before that. First was on Ziggy album (all great). But even a bit of the 1970s stuff and most of the 1960s stuff is just plain bad. |

Was talking about Bowie at work today, we all agreed that he had a crap voice really but he totally delivered certain songs regardless because they were (some of them) really well written! Our fave is moonage daydream! Not overrated! He earned his position in the musical history books! |

Remember seeing him at the Dome in Brighton just after Aladdin Sane was released. Of course at the time everyone was of the opinion he was finished and that Aladdin Sane was a total sell out of his values. Didn't stop us buying tickets and screaming our support at one of the most amazing gigs ever. I don't think there was a dry eye in the house when they did the Bewley Brothers.
Got my live in girlfriend wet in the gusset and we had some most invigorating sex after the gig. Was a fuck session that I still reminisce about. |

Firstly I have to be one of the biggest Bowie fans in the world, but there are some phases of his career that have completely left me cold. I rather like Hallo Space boy actually, but that might be because I associate it with that video of him singing in a perverted vicar's outfit in kitten heels looking sexy as fuck (which he was wont to do). Oh you've got me all hot and bothered now. |

Does a genius who changes not only music but fashion and I dare say some aspect of society need to sound amazing? Bob Dylan sounds awful but his music powered movements against governments.
Analysis of Bowie music shows an influence as big as the Beatles, his androgynous fashion paved the way for people to be openly bisexual and he wasn't up his own backside like a damn mot are at the moment.

Saw him in Sydney 1983 Serious Moonlight Tour. Refused to play his old stuff as was promoting his new album. Wasn't so keen on it then love it now. An Icon who pushed boundaries sad that his latter stuff is weird but maybe I'm just getting old. |

Like anything that relies on personal taste, everyone has their own opinions and are of course entitled to them - there was a similar thread to this about The Beatles the other week and the responses were similar.
I had an English teacher that used to quote the Latin phrase "do gustibus non disputandum" at us when we said a book was rubbish - the translation being "There's no argument in taste" and it's very true and certainly applies to threads like this.
That said like him or not, there's no arguing that Bowie was an extraordinary talent who influenced many and shaped music and purely based on record/ticket sales alone could never be described as overrated regardless of whether you like him or not.
I'm by no means his biggest fan and only really know the greatest hits package but he ranks up there with the best based on that alone.
That said there are some tracks, particularly from his later years, that do nothing for me. |

I was lucky enough to see him live at the old Wembley at Net Aid in 1999 before it got bashed down. He was absolutely brilliant!

It’s difficult to fathom some people’s thinking when it comes to what’s great and what’s not in music history . Bowie was such an innovator , opened so many doors in so many ways for so many genres . An absolute genius who was never afraid to re define himself . |

Never been a huge Bowie fan, but shit? Anybody who can write the line "put on your red shoes and dance the blues" is ok in my book. Impossible to get it right 100% of the time over that long a career. |

Everyone has sporadic output at times, DB was no different, my frustration with him was the one time I saw him eat Wembley Stadium on the Glass Spider tour, which was not a great album, and he is in the frame of mind to play loads of new songs on that tour, and just lost the crowd totally. I never went to see him again after that.
I think the 70s 80s artists also had more pressure than now to produce an album every year or 2 , so the quality threshold inevitably suffered sometimes |
