A women at my place of work has been there 15 years never goes off sick, has a responsible job which is stressful at times, and they have just made her redundant with very little notice, and split up her duties and given part of it to the guy who worked under her, I guess just to save on one salary.
Makes you think it could happen to any off us :-$ |

Sad news. But essentially just shows that we’re all just commodities to make money for our employers. Once our usefulness is up, most of us are discarded without a second thought. |

"That’s why you need incriminating photos of both the CEO and the HR director "
This!
That’s awful though in all seriousness. I don’t actually think hard work and loyalty count for an awful lot these days which is a real shame and probably quite a large part of what’s wrong in the world today.
I don’t think anyone is indispensable either but you can bet your arse I have a very good go at making myself as irreplaceable as I possibly can. I love my job, most of the time and my boss loves me. |

It certainly does make you think! No one is safe these days. Having supported senior management in my career I’ve seen this many times and there is never any good reason why they target such a committed worker. I say bring back the Unions of the 1970s to protect the workers! Ok don’t scream at me I come in peace |

I agree, unfortunately most finance managers are just looking for that window of opportunity to save a bit of money.

Permanent job? It's the job that may be permanent, not the person,no doubt came as a shock to the lady, perhaps a signal to other employees?
I work for one company at the mo,used to be self employed, looks like might be going back that way, qualifications, experience, contacts can get job anywhere in country, prefer temp work, got to the stage now I value my time more highly,four/five weeks hols a year doesn't come close |

"I think it’s always been the same, but they are better at fibbing these days"
Nah there were days when a company would be run into the ground for doing that, the people would have just walked out.
Thats why liberals want migration, it dissolves local national pride. If you move to London for a job, and work in a company, and you do not view London as your home, and Frank gets the sack, you don't complain, cause Frank is just some guy you only say hi to every now and again and you got your own shit to deal with.
If you go into a company that is full of people living in the same place born and bred, and you treat one unfairly, see how long your company lasts.
Thats why some of the richest men in the world want the EU to erode nationalities, and to import as many people as possible. On the surface they look to be doing kind things, but these agendas can have motives as dark as white nationalism etc.
Obviously the best place is in the middle, where people have a degree of local and national pride, and accept that they need people coming in to help them etc etc. |

We've both been made redundant me twice, the last time I volunteered for it. Mr N has been made redundant 6 times in a 44 year working life.
It's never fair or right or easy to deal with but it's easier to get rid of one higher paid person and distribute their responsibilities than get rid of two lower paid people. |

Nail.
Head.
Hammer.
It's all about a small number of individuals making as much money as possible.
They don't give a flying fuck about individuals, and are simply interested in the balance sheet.
You are expensive in almost any job, and expendable.
Cheaper labour is, for them, a wet dream.
Lack of unionisation, erosion of worker's rights and governmental indifference are the cherries on top of the trifle.

My father always told me you’re only a number and can be replaced in a heartbeat.
My job isn’t safe, so I’m kind of prepared that I might lose It within the next two years. I’ve started looking at other options and might jump ship sooner rather than later. |

When I started working in a golf club 11 years ago, I started off in the pro shop, I said to the guy that had been there ten years why he was still just working behind the bar and in the shop and he said to me ‘when you get to the top there isn’t anywhere else to go’ and he was right, when I got to the top 6 years later, with new bosses I knew they were on the verge of sacking me because I had shown them how to do everything and had no need for me. Paying me a very nice wage when they could do it themselves, they were arseholes of the highest degree, so I went and found another job, completely different, took a very big pay cut but I wasn’t giving those two twats the satisfaction!
Again with my new job, I have a new boss and she’s very much ‘your best friend’ to the people she wants to be but I’m treading very carefully not to be sucked into this whole ‘your tops gorgeous’ trying to friend me etc, I’ve seen it far too many times.

I have been made redundant twice in my life. It isn't pleasant. The worst thing in when the employers turn up the heat in the hope you will resign to save them money. I was once in a team of over 220 and only 15 were left at the the end. The process took 2 years and it didn't matter how hard you worked because the decisions had already been taken. Things are fine now but I won't forget those experiences. |

My job is fairly safe due to shortages in the labour market but at my age the Job is too physical.I have an interview next week for something easier but with a 50% pay cut. Should still be a better option though. |

My job is safe. Longevity of service is the norm at my workplace.
Apart from part timers staff have been here between 9 & 21 years.
My predecessor was here 6 yrs and only left owing to death in immediate family and had to move away.
Family owned business, great team, best boss and job ever. Couldn't be happier and 3 years to retirement. |

"Even the blind can see how precarious work is for everyone these days. Highly skilled and experience = expensive employee."
Accounts know the cost of everything and the value of nothing.
Companies are run by the accountants they hold the cards, if it looks better on the books (even if it costs more) it will happen. |

Jobs are rarely safe these days. Maybe I've been unlucky as all 4 jobs I've had in my 28 year career, I have been made redundant from. Although the last one I volunteered my way out of the business, as I wasn't too impressed with the way things were heading. |

I feel sorry for the people that have the extra duties from the woman that was made redundant. I’m sure they won’t get a pay rise either just the stress of additional responsibility.
Loyalty and knowledge are not valued by employers at times.
There were redundancies following restructuring at my work last year so you never know what lies ahead.

Those situations often mean taking on responsibilities above your role and pay grade too. People rarely protest because they think they're lucky it wasn't them being made redundant. |

The less slaves you have, the more whips you need to move that stone...
I have seen many managers rail on staff and dock pay for being a minute late arriving. Then turn round and ask them to work 30 minutes extra at the end of the day to get the job out the door. And for some reason they don't understand why nobody wants to...
One place I used to support was 100% dependant on their computer system. When it broke I got called to fix it. One boss used to ask how long I would be and send his staff on long lunch breaks or even send them home if appropriate, another made his team sit at their desks and wait for me to fix it... guess which one got the best productivity per staff member. |

My experience has been different in that senior and middle management are first to go because it's a greater wage saving for fewer losses.
I agree with the rest of your post though, give staff a little leeway and they'll give it back to you. |

I work for a supermarket that announced redundancies last week.
They are cutting the number of managers by half and getting rid of all team leaders/department supervisors.
In my store many of the team leaders have been with the company since leaving school with some having 25+ years loyalty to the company.
I dread to think what it will be like working (or shopping) there in a few months when they have got rid of everyone. It's the team leaders who seem to do the most and keep everything running smoothly.
I don't think my job us at risk at the moment but you never know.
Thankfully I don't rely on my job, it is just 12 hrs a week to give me a break from looking after my mum. |

If we didn't do it then the company would have ran out of cash within 18 months so its better to sacrifice the few to better the many. My job is safe at the moment but accept that that could change in the blink of an eye. I have had a career which I got to the top of but these days I value my free time. I will give my all when in work but I arrive and leave on time.
I tell people that nobody is irreplaceable and anybody who tries is a fool. Similarly any company that allows a person to become irreplaceable is heading for disaster because sooner or later that person will leave or drop down dead and then the problems start. It happen in a company Mrs T worked for a few years ago and the company nearly went to the wall as the guy had all the knowledge in his head and he took it to the grave. |

I am far from safe. In fact its pretty scary. Cuts have seen community/ youth services disappear at an alarming rate.
My current post is funded by Europe and I doubt very much we will be refunded.
The Government made a promise to replace European funding once we left the EU but we have been informed by the Home Office that this is unlikely.
Time to rethink my aspirations which is a great shame after years of study and dedication. |

I've no doubt that for people with any humanity it is awful however for faceless HR departments its a case of scoring people on a points system and getting a designated person to give out the news. Also if you feel its horrendous for you who will get up and go to work the next morning, you can at least double the horror for the person you're telling. |

That situation is frightening and humiliating for all three but most humiliating for the person who is unsuccessful.
It doesn't matter how redundancy is presented corporately its an extremely unpleasant experience. The person often feels they're a failure, colleagues have a subtle change of attitude towards you as of you're somehow tainted and the worry and stress of not having a job can't be underestimated. |

Very few people have real security unfortunately. Even people in roles which were traditionally thought of as a job for life are finding out that it’s not.
Hubby is a postie and many of his colleagues have 30+ years in the job. When Royal Mail was privatised there was a rationalisation and a lot of his friends took voluntary redundancy as the package offered was exceptional. Full time posties have now been replaced by part timers.
I work for RM in their Parcelforce section and my contract is a 6 month rolling contract as they are unable to issue permanent at the moment. I’m not too worried about security at the moment though as hubby was the same for the first 5 years he worked there! |
