"well theres a few but watermelon in easter hay by zappa is up there somewhere "
Have loved Zappa since my early teens. Wonderfully inventive guitarist.
Guthrie Govan is a current fave. His solo on Steven Wilson's "Drive Home" is fantastic. |

"Mine:
All along the watchtower- Jimi
Another brick in the wall part two - da Floyd
Oh. And The Rockford Files theme ... " .
Considering he played the guitar upside down and kak handed I think Jimi is probably a good shout |

Guthrie is a cracking guitarist I’m looking forward to seeing Steven in March
I love Comfortably Numb - the second solo on that and the solo on On an Island show how good Gilmour is.
Great shout above for Fat Old Sun too |

"I think Mr Gilmour's gonna walk away with this thread!
Proper order to. I hope he logs on here later & possibly pens a ‘lick’ in acknowledgment "
Absolutely. Been my guitar hero since I was 9. Inspired me to play. Enjoy playing Floyd in pubs with band. |

"At the 2004 Rock Hall of Fame induction ceremony princes solo on while my guitar gently weeps. Awesome"
That was an amazing "f you" to all the guitar legends onstage as a lot of them never rated him and he wasn't even supposed to play, and he blew them all out of the water, then walked off......very sorely missed x |

"Steve Vai...Little Wing
Don't mean to be rude but that's Jimi's tune. If you haven't heard it give it a listen. Apologise if you have. "
It's an amazing song but if judging on the guitar solo I'd go for SRV's version too |

Fair comment as I'm a big SRV fan, but I have to stay loyal to Jimi on this one. |

Soles in... I wish I was a Girl by the Pink Fairies.
When you start thinking about this question, the list could be endless. Bands like The Groundhogs, good old Tony could knock some stunning guitar playing out. |

Can’t believe nobody has mentioned any of the guitar breaks in the tracks from the ‘original’ Fleetwood Mac featuring Pete Green Danny Kerwin and Jeremy Spencer. Three outstanding guitarists in one band. |

"So many......David Gilmour takes some beating for me I must admit. I think Matt Long might do it one day, he is so innovative. .....'Make it Rain'"
Cant argue with David Gilmour. Pink Floyd are something else. Even thought the Division Bell was outstanding despite being new. Hated the last album which I bought for a lot of money on vinyl. |

I was lucky enough to see Floyd at earls court in 96. Brit Floyd are well worth a watch. |

Both solos in Drowning Witch by Zappa (or the previously mentioned Watermelon).
Guthrie Govan is a local lad and he is a phenomenal player and composer. |

I always watch his videos on you tube concerning guitar gear and equipment as I'm a bad guitar nerd. |

IMO, the greatest recorded solo guitar sound is the solo on Baker Street. Such a pure overdriven geetar sound.
The solo from the extended version of My Sharona is pretty cool.
As an 80s hair metaller you'd think I'd be dropping names like Nuno Bettencourt, Reb Beach, John Sykes etc. |

quite surprised to see no Jimmy Page mentioned and not surprised to see no mention of Steve Hackett who is an massively underrated player and has done some incredible solos with Genesis when they were at their peak .. too many to mention really ..quite impossible to pick one favourites if u love music ..u wd have to pick 10 at least |

I saw the aussie floyd in cov when they first started. Floyd at wembley 84 momentary tour and 96 division tour earls court.
Saw waters on the amused tour at the genting.
Hard pressed to isolate one solo. They all hit me in different ways |

Such an underrated guitarist.
There's a bootleg from an after show in '88 where he plays 'Just My Imagination', and the solo he does in that is breathtaking. |

Joe satriani- always with me always with you, satch boogie, cryin.
Stevie ray vaughan- little wing- lenny, life without you.
Zakk wylde- farewell ballad,in this river, throwin it all away, like a bird.
Gary moore- still got the blues for you, the loner, parisenne walkways. |

So many fantastic solos over the years. Some amazing guitarists to although many of said legends are, for my tastes at least, far too obsessed with overly self indulgent, technical showing off at the expense of simple musicality. Steve Vai (technically probably the greatest guitarist ever, even possibly surpassing his mentor, the great Joe Satriani) and Yngwie Malmsteen (the master of classically themed, light speed played arpeggios) being two examples of the former.
I’m going to go with some of Ritchie Blackmore’s work from his Rainbow days as my favourite solos therefore - the perfect balance of technique and beauty |

Totally agree with you. Have so much respect for Steve Vai and Joe Satch and players of that style but much prefer melodic solos that give you goosebumps. Not into fretwankers really. |

Other than the ones we saw Captain Sensible play this evening, at the other end of the musical genre scale; Guitar Man by Bread is pretty decent guitar soloing, and you can add Goodbye To Love by The Carpenters to the list too! |

Tsk! Yet another misuse of the word 'underrated'. I've seen everyone from Bowie to Zeppelin described as underrated.
Prince had a pbenomenal career, was incredibly influential, and globally respected as a musician, producer and songwriter.
The last thing he was was underrated.
He's most definitely highly rated. |

Mine had always been Eddie Van Halen on Michael Jackson’s ‘Beat it’
Not just because it was awesome... but because he did it in one take, set the studio on fire because his amps blew up... and they just ended up using that take...
It has always been one of my favourites, but even more so after hearing the story on a documentary |

"Crikey! No mention of Eddie Van Halen, yet Kirk Hamster of Metallica gets a nod."
I mentioned Eruption above. The first track that comes to my head when guitar solo is mentioned, and I'm not even that keen on Van Halen. |

Lots I'd choose from those already mentioned, including some amazing Pink Floyd favourites, but I'll add Wearing the Inside Out, from The Division Bell. LOVE that.
Plus:
Megadeth - Tornado of Souls
Metallica - One, Blackened, Orion, Puppets, Nothing Else Matters
Steve Vai - Tender Surrender & pretty much all of the Passion & Warfare album
Iron Maiden - Aces High & Caught Somewhere in Time - Both of these give me major chills, particularly Adrian Smith's parts. Holy shit...
Dire Straits - Brothers in Arms & Sultans of Swing
GnR - Sweet Child O' Mine & November Rain
Eagles - Hotel California
And I'll never forget the pure beauty of a live acoustic session by Nils Lofgren with 'Keith Don't Go', which has a breathtaking steel string acoustic solo guaranteed to send shivers down your spine. |
