Schadenfreude is the experience of pleasure, joy, or self-satisfaction that comes from learning of or witnessing the troubles, failures, or humiliation of another.
When did you last experience it? Come on, be honest, we won't judge! |

Same. I don't think we are flawed though. |

I'm too busy trying to recover from fucking up/ failing/ humiliating myself to notice anyone else's fuck ups. Or if I do notice something I'm usually thinking ohhh crap I did that but worse. |

Seriously, I’ve never felt any satisfaction in another’s misfortune even when it has happened to people who wronged me. I have felt a degree of compassion instead.
There was one ex close friend who really hurt me when I was a teenager. I was surprised that my emotional response was to feel compassion for him when I heard of the troubles he was having, rather than feeling smug.
I think I find it relatively easy to forgive even if I don’t forget. |

Almost daily, if I'm honest; I receive so many video clips (in a Whats'app group) from all round the world, of people doing stupid things, and coming a cropper |

I think that’s a different thing though... it’s human nature to laugh at people doing stupid things but I’d like to think I’ve never felt joy over someone else’s failures or humiliations... even if I don’t really like someone, I may consider it as serving them right but I’m not sure it would give me any joy. |

You've never laughed at someone walking into a lamp post while looking at their phone or stepping in a big puddle or dropping their freshly bought coffee/ice cream on the floor or anything like that? That's schadenfreude.

Ah that’s not as described in the OP though... those are funny mishaps and yes of course, I think we’ve all laughed at that. I misunderstood the post in that case. My view still stands on getting joy out of other people’s failures. Finding humour in nonsense spillages isn’t quite the same. |

Having consulted google... the OP is the wiki definition and the google definition is: schadenfreude
'???dn?fr??d?,German '???d?n?fr?yd?/Submit
noun
pleasure derived by someone from another person's misfortune.
"a business that thrives on Schadenfreude"
I guess to a certain extent it’s an absolute yes... I laugh at lots of misfortunate things but it’s such a wide definition in wiki it makes it sound a bit mean. |

The important aspect in schadenfreude is malice in the joy one feels over another’s misfortune. Jeremy Beadle ‘You’ve been framed’ type humour is not really a good example of its real meaning. |

I don't get pleasure from seeing others fail.
Ever. |

Every man's death diminishes me
every man's misfortune does the same...
If I laugh at the misfortunes of others am I any better than those who laugh when misfortune strikes me...
Where is the love.... |

I never enjoyed that program either. Even as a child it made me feel uncomfortable. |

Schadenfreude can be mean or just funny- whatever any dictionary tells you it means both.
I always make fun of friends who have done something silly and can laugh about small misfortunes of others. that doesn't mean I underestimate or dismiss the discomfort they feel. I laugh at a friend and then help them to get things sorted again.
it makes life more enjoyable and can lighten the situation if done respectfully and doesn't have to be mean! |

I think it comes down to our opinion of a given person. If, for whatever reason we dislike them in the first place, we may well derive some semblance of satisfaction from their downfall in any given area of their lives (hopefully within moral reasoning of course). Take a commonly reviled public figure as an example; the very same people who show disdain for them will likely rejoice in any form of public humiliation that befalls them. |

Years ago I worked at Windsor Safari Park...In the Top Section they had a monkey jungle where you could walk through a tunnel with the monkeys above you where you could feed them peanuts. One guy started teasing one of the monkeys and I told him to stop or he would have to leave. I was then called away to another part of the jungle. When I came back I could still see him teasing the monkey as I went to tell him to go the monkey had enough and reached down to pull his hair...it was a wig...the guy was bald as a coot...he went dashing out in embarrassment and all you could see was this shoulder length wig haring round the cage with a monkey underneath...I did eventually retrieve the wig...for the monkeys safety...but was laughing the whole time...Did I experience joy pleasure and satisfaction...damn right I did...and I still can, makes me smile every time I remember it lol. |

Not quite what he said. The correct quote is much nastier...

Had a bf once who got visibly excited when he had bad news to impart, whether it was people we knew breaking up or a natural disaster on the news. He's a complete psycho with zero empathy for others. When I think of schadenfreude I think of him. |

My opinion about this is that someone who derives pleasure/satisfaction from a friends failures is an insecure loser who can't or won't try to accomplish anything for themselves |

You haven't quite grasped it babe!
He doesn't want his friends to fail or suffer or have a bad time...he just feels pain when he sees them succeed.
Of course the irony is that Gore Vidal was a hugely successful and influential journalist author and social commentator. So maybe it was his friends who felt the jealous and envy? |
