Tester we did one hit wonders

So today I want you’re best bands from this era. Not just the band but give their best songs or a reason!

If maybe because you saw them live or met them in the pub!!!

For me i have thought about it love queen, but I met these guys in a pub in Bournemouth just before they became famous.

So my first choice is

Alphaville - Big In Japan: A very serious subject matter (heroin addiction) is tackled rather sensitively, encased within an awesome eighties synth driven classic.

Visage - Fade To Gray: Simply so far ahead of its time (the use of the electronic kick drum became a staple years later in all dance music). Again - classic!

Not sure what it is about Hawkwind but they've been my only consistent favourite since I was about 13. There are loads of great bands that I love, but HW are a whole musical universe all of their own.

I worked the sound desk for a Nik Turner gig a couple of years ago. Didn't stop grinning for a month

They performed it live on stage at an outdoor festival in France and got busted for using the local prostitutes as dancers

Madness - It Must Be Love (if I have to pick something of theirs from the 80s) - the band I grew up with and still continue to do so now - have seen them 50+ times live - the song just works for me on various levels in terms of meaning - probably one of the most underrated bands of their era until recently when finally they are mentioned in the same breath as the likes of The Kinks before them.

The Jam - Down In The Tube Station At Midnight - Weller is one of the finest songwriters not only of his generation but any generation. This song is just the perfect storytelling song full of dark menace and superb rhyming couplets all driven by an awesome rhythm section from Bruce Foxton and Rick Buckler

Prefab Sprout - Moving The River - another underrated songwriter - Paddy McAlloon had an eye for a lyric and a melody - this is one of my favourite tracks ever from one of my favourite albums ever (Steve McQueen)

The Beat - Stand Down Margaret - another underrated band - the song was the perfect protest song against someone who in my opinion tore our country apart and paved the way for how we live today in an every man for himself society. I've met lead singer and chief songwriter Dave Wakeling several times and he's one of the nicest people you could hope to meet.

All of the above helped shape my musical tastes and continue to inform them in one way or another

Also another in my top ten is Eden by Everything But The Girl..some of the songs on there lyric wise make me cry...

It was wizard then mud and Slade for me. Then I got onto queen and 10cc
