We're approaching that time when Edinburgh city council sells a traditional Scottish Hogmanay to a large bunch of sucker tourists. Come, pay prime hotel rates, stand in the cold for six hours watching a bunch of old has-beens from the scampi-in-a-basket nostalgia circuit, along with a few fireworks, then walk through the streets next day window-shopping for tartan in all the closed shops.
The trad Hogmanay they've purloined to resell used to be locals gathering at the Tron at midnight, celebrating the bells, then dispersing to parties. Now they close off the city centre, so if you are going to a party across town, your walking the long way round.
But there's wind predicted for Sunday, which has closed the event down in the past, so it's not all bad news. |
