From Ask.com: Spain

Question: Is it Ibiza or Eivissa?

What is the correct spelling - Ibiza or Eivissa? And how should it be pronounced?

Answer:

Both spellings are correct:

•Ibiza is Spanish and English.

In Spanish it should be pronounced 'Ee-bee-tha'. In English it can be pronounced 'Ee-bee-tha' but 'Eye-bee-tha' is acceptable too. Under no circumstances should it be pronounced as if it rhymes with 'eat pizza' (unless you are in the 90s pop group the Vengaboys).

•Eivissa is Catalan. It is pronounced 'Ee-bee-sa'. It is incorrect in English - most people won't know what you're talking about.

Was fun being with daughter in US on this topic, she has learnt to cope with multiple words for the same thing.

Shame fast food staff can't cope with me saying 'Big Mac Meal please', I have to say a number one, pause then say please.

Am I the only one who speaks the Queens English?

Scone has an E at the end. Without it, it would be pronounced Scon. With it, it is pronounced Scone as in cone with an S at the front.

Barth

G rass
