Garage or Private??

What have your experiences been.. my last car got scraped thanks to a fucked up engine so this is new territory for me.

I will only go private from a reputable garage after my 1st experience. But don't go to Longlands cars. They don't care. Good luck

Go to a garage, make sure it's got a NEW MOT, had the last service (check the service history, if none, walk away), check number of previous owners..... if over 5(ish), check that the car has been serviced by all.

Make sure there is something in the service history for a cambelt. If not, ensure you can afford to have it replaced immediately...... and do it. If it has been done, see how long until the next one is due.

But most importantly, make sure they include a warranty.

Jason is doing 6 months, £1,000 warranties on all his small, Starter Motor cars. Will take the pain out of any real issues.

Or go for a slightly more expensive 6 month, £3,000 warranty depending on the price of the car.

If in doubt, email us, Jason is a very reputable dealer with 25 years experience and is more than willing to help.

Sound advice from Maddie. IF you buy privately you can pay an AA mechanic to give the car a check over for you. xx

I would never take it to a dealer, maybe a garage/mechanic you have a good relationship with?

Selling to a dealer you get less than selling privately usually unless you catch them at the end of their sales quota's and they are open for a bit more negotiation. xx

Your last car would have been back on the road two weeks after you 'scrapped' it. A garage can buy parts much cheaper than you can and put a vehicle back on the road that is considered a write off by the insurance company. I'd have sold it to a scrap dealer and had it crushed to prevent the garage putting it back on the road.

If you buy private, get a HPI check. Also, use AA or RAC mechanic but they will only check the bare bones of the car. Check the service book and make sure you take it for a good test drive. One where you use all gears, including reverse, turn the wheel full lock, over some speed humps etc. Sounds a pain, but may just save you buying a dud.

Also, private or garage......... if in doubt..... walk away.

You do have recourse with a garage providing they don't mark the invoice "spares/repair" or "scrap" but my advice still stands.......... get the best warranty you can afford. A garage may even throw it in with the price of the car or at least go halves.

Very true.

However, if it truly is scrap, scrap it yourself. Scrap is at a high at the moment and cars are fetching nearly £200 depending on the size.

or sell it on ebay as spares or repair, listing exactly whats gone wrong with it. You wouldn't believe how many people can put new engines in, or strip heads, etc....... or even want a donor car to get their own up to their specification.

I would say if you dont know what you're doing then take it to the garage as part-ex.

A private sale will almost always get a better price for it, so long as you dont get a crafty haggler!

Which some warranty companies will 'top up'

Check though, that if still under warranty, that it includes transfer on sale.

my current car isnt going to be scrapped. On autotrader same make/model/mileage is about 3000.. those are from Dealers, sadly there are no private sellers to compare prices

I had a quote from one garage offering me 1500 so half what they are selling it for.

Dealers buy at book/trade price. They sell at retail.

They have overheads etc.

But they do offer far more protection than private sellers.

The car has to be fit for purpose. They should offer a warranty and if they don't, they will still be liable for the first 6 months (but you will have a fight on your hands if you don't have a warranty). You may get your tax included, any reputable garage will put a new MOT and service on it (included in the price).

Can I ask what make and model you are looking at, including year........?

That way, Jason can tell you what it SHOULD be selling for retail.

What would the car have been worth had it had a decent engine in it? If you feel you got value for it then who am I to argue. Siren's parents had a car last year that they'd paid £4k for and within a car it developed a mysterious engine problem that nobody knew how to diagnose, not even the bloody manufacturer would take a look at it - yet lo and behold, two weeks after they 'scrapped' it they saw it being driven around. £4k up the swanee and nothing to show for it.

There's the good and the bad in all walks of life, definately including car sales people.

Jason struggles against the 'bad apples' of the car dealership world but his reputation far outweights what the idiots get up to.

If you want, ask question after question after question. If you don't get satisfactory answers, walk away.

I sold my last car privately. I tidied up a couple of scratches myself, gave it a good clean and polish. Fitted new number plates, and even painted the tyres. Just the things most car dealers do. Asked Parkers book price and got within £100 in less than a week.

If you have the luxury of time, sell it privately, far more likely to get a reasonable price for it- to get an idea of its worth, look up in Autotrader, either mag or online, for similar age, milage, condition, and go from there x

it does include a processing fee, and you have to get the car to their nearest office to you at your expense, and they do not pay on delivery, it takes a few days
