what a reminder of the sacrifice these men make, some of them are thought to be some of the navy seal's who killed bin laden, the taliban shot them down while they were flying in a chinook. gutting. |

Hundreds of thousands of innocent (not soldiers) Iraqis and Afghans have been killed by NATO so more attention should be paid to this.

A total of 31 people. It's horrific but an expected retribution for the killing of Bin Laden.
I'm personally waiting for Obama's next move .......... could be bloody.

Of course it is a great loss for the families and the country too but that doesn't mean i support the war. The corrupt politicians should pull out the soldiers. |

it is a big deal..especailly to the ones they have left behind..coming from a military background myself, i know what its like to worry and be afraid to watch the news or to wait for that knock on the door..so it is a big deal.. |

I'm trying to remain calm here.
As someone who works with the military and who's just said goodbye to over half my Battalion as they are off to Afghan............ it is a big fucking deal.
To me, it doesn't matter who sends them there or if the war is winnable.
I just want them home safe in 6 months and I don't want the phone call at work saying I've just lost one of my colleagues.
My pain will be NOTHING compared to that of their families.
So lets keep this thread how is was meant to be........ as a thread of respect for those that lost their lives in fighting for a cause. |

Whether or not you support the war in Afghanistan, saying it 'Is no big deal' is crass.....
Maybe if you had family and friends serving overseas in war zones you might think twice before making statements like that. |

there is something I always say at this point...
I may not support the decision of the politicans and higher ups who sent the soldiers into these situations... HOWEVER I will absolutely suppose the men and women soldiers on the ground in the tasks they have to do, and I always wish they come home safe and sound....
so please take the actual political aspect and do that in another thread.. and leave those who wish to pay there own respects to this one...

I have huge admiration for those who defend our country and that of our allies. My thoughts are with the family and friends of all who have been lost over there and with those who have been injured or lost their lives or have been changed for the worse for their experiences. They always have and always will have my support and graditude.

It never ceases to amaze me that when an atrocity committed is still fresh in the mind the clamour for revenge is heard wide and far but when the cool light of day has passed overhead a few times the calls become silent and the accusations start flying.
Think back to September 11 2001 and remember how you felt when you saw those planes flying into the World Trade Centre. Remember the feeling of revulsion you felt as you knew with absolute certainty that thousands had just lost their lives. Those on the planes who saw where they were going andwhat was about to befall them, and those in the offices of the floors where the planes hit who saw a jet airliner heading straight for them and knew they had no way to get out of it's path. And then those who went up the towers to rescue those still in them who had no idea a billion tonnes of concrete was about to grind their bodies into nothingness.
One man brought that about. And he was hunted down killed like the rabid dog he was because of it.

Hundreds of thousands???..... doubtful.
No big deal.... well, I beg to differ. They are dying over there so that the terrorists cannot bring to fruition their stated aim, that of worldwide Islamism. If you are that keen on voicing crap like this then perhaps you should up sticks to a more ameanable location. |

Very sad news, most of the seals and people on board the helicopter would of been very young, sons, brothers, husbands and daddys to others, it is a big deal. |

i served in our armed forces, a couple of tours in NI. Lost a very good mate down the Falklands..
having said that i abhor war and the loss it brings and whilst some conflicts are inevitable, some are justified and correct (eg. WW2).
This one will be judged in time by the historians, making claims about innocent deaths in their 'hundreds of thousands' is naive.
How many have the Taliban deliberately killed to further their disgusting idealogy?
Maybe we should withdraw and allow the population to just 'get on with it' under a regime that is vile and repulsive in its treatment of women and those whose lifestyle's it deems not acceptable??
To say any loss of life is 'no big deal' is quite frankly disgraceful. |

I totally agree! But I am also disgusted by people who lament the passing on a polar bear over that of a 17 year old kid who was killed by that bear! No matter the rights and wrongs of whether the Seals should have been in Afghanistan or the 17 year old should have been in Norway, ALL loss of life is abhorant!

I don't think you will ever understand until you have had someone you know go to war. It is a big deal!! Its a big deal staying by the phone every night hoping your husband calls or gets on MSN. It is a big deal when you have to comfort a woman that has lost her husband. It is a big deal when you have to become "single" for a year at a time. Its a big deal when the man you love comes home a different man. Its a big deal when you have to marry 2 sets of people..

We (Les & I) cannot begin to understand what that must be like! We have had a life of togetherness apart from perhaps 2 nights away at a time. It cannot be good for anyone in that situation.
I have seen elsewhere on the forums at odd times people saying that soldiers choose their job and know what they are letting themselves in for. Well thank God they do! I may not agree with the war in Afghanistan or the one we had in Iraq, but that is no reason not to support our troops overseas!
To all you people out there, scared to answer the phone or dreading the even worse knock at the door, Ignore those who value human life less than their own _iews and lets hope that they never find themselves in the situation that you dread every day of your lives...

Of course I knew when I married my ex husband he sat me down and said do you know what your life is going to be like you are now married to the army but when you love a person the fear is put to the back of your head and you embrace the army life. I don't agree with the war and I feel for the innocent getting killed in Afgan and Iraq the locals too have families and dying a senseless death. However for someone to say its no big deal it touches a very raw nerve with me as the war split up my marriage.. |

I may not agree with the wars we have fought and are still fighting because our leaders send our troops out. However, I support our troops 100%. Where I used to live, when young lads turned 16, they had the choice of the local steel works, or the forces. University wasn't an option for most of them.
I've been to pass out parades, and said good bye to a lot of young lads I went to school with. I've said that final "goodbye" many more times then I should have.
Serving in the army never leaves a man, one of my oldest friends recently committed suicide because he couldn't cope with why he was still alive after his best mate who was sat next to him in the lorry was killed by a roadside IED.
Ask his wife and 5 year old boy why they can't just get over it. |
