Overseas call centres, don't you just love them not!!!!!
Got myself a new Virgin Media Broadband - set up great, speak to UK activation centre, great. Advised to complete online registration and then will be all set to go. BUT, go through several pages of the usual crap of name age sex location inside leg measurement etc etc to get to the final page that says we have a problem with registering your account, please rinx ,,,,,,,, and quote error code xxxx bloddy guy at the other end says what does that mean? I say you are the expert and its your system thats why I'm ringing you. did get it logged on eventually but the telephone call probably cost me more than one months rental, it was like talking to my dear old dad where you have to repeat everything 10 times before he understands what you are saying.
Sorry rant over and at least the connection is soooooooooooooooo much fast than the dongle I have been using for the last 6 months

Sadly yet another industry that has gone overseas.
I wonder if people started telling these companies that they will only deal with UK-based call centres (and then importantly backed that up by voting with their feet) whether it could change something.
I've had people ringing me from Canada before now who haven't a clue what they are talking about. |

I can understand your frustration, no one ever has been left frustrated by a UK based call centre.
The problems is call centres often exploit labour and that causes the problems, not the location. |

this is actually the key..
as someone who has just lost my job to a call centre overseas the best thing people can do it complain..
lloyds took there call centre overseas and now they brought it back
abbey/santander did and brought it back... and other companies are now finding out that it is more bother than it is worth... but it only works if person vote with there feets...
if virgin media have shipped theres abroad.. but sky have decided to stay home and build new centres in sheffield and in newcastle.... there is your answer....

On the subject of the banks, HSBC screen their customer at the point that they enter their account details and then make an informedopinion which call centre to transfer them too. I suspect other banks do it to. |

Totally agree with you Fabio.
I used to work in one of the original call centres ages back and it then got moved to another part of the UK where they paid lower wages, and then it went to India.
And I don't blame the Indians one bit.
The only thing that will ever change this is if people start voting with their feet, and telling the companies why they are doing so.
In saying that consumers here would have to back that up by maybe paying more for things. Question is are we prepared to do that?
If not there is the reason your call goes abroad. |

A few companies are migrating their call centre operations back to the UK following customer feedback. Back office activity sits better offshore rather than voice.
Lets hope the absenteeism & attrition allow for speed of answer within the UK. |

I work for a very large organisation...our customer call centre is in england.
Our internal it and some of our processing is off shore in India...
I hate dealing with off sure team they are rude ignorant and cannot think.they can't speak English either.
Going back to op about virgin...I called them on a bank holiday to rant that they had flecked up a phone install 5 doors down that meant that they had our number and we had no phone.
Got Indian call centre..I demanded to speak to a manager aft threading them with of com.they put the phone down on me. After the bank holiday I called the English call centre and went mental.... |

We will only buy our services from those companies with english call centres.
About to change from Talk Talk since they transferred some of theirs because I'll be buggered if I can ever understand a fricking word a foreign call centre says.
Love the Natwest (or Shatwest depending if I've any money in my accounts) cus they are all English call centers and you can actually get through to your own branch.
My standard reply now is:
"we don't take solicited or unsolicited telephone calls from foreign call centres, if you have anything you wish to discuss with either myself or my partner, please get one of your British departments to call us..... goodbye" and I put the phone down.
They never seem to ring again! |

I hate to say this but I must be the only person in the UK that has never ever had any problems with Telewest, or Virgin as it is now and wild horses couldn't drag me away from them |

I get that all the time hence my voicemail is on permanently. What is most annoying is that they don't seem to say what they want and are far too over familiar. In fact I got so pissed off having been rung 3 times by the same company in one day, I told them I would report them to the Police for harrassment |

Try Orange, I am sure they will beat T Mobile as I often have to visit the local shop to get them to do what I want, shame they employed those with an IQ of a stone |

Nothing worse than calling with a problem, and they read the questions off a script in the broken english, that seems to be rife in bangalore... For every one that goes out the way to help (and I have had couple who have solved problems) there are 20 who lecture you and explain in broken english that the problem is your computer, email account, tv, etc etc
The arse who came up with outsourcing call centres should be burnt at a stake for crimes against customer service... |

Another problem is the quality of calls, and use of headsets that make it hard at times to here what is being said.
The firms use VoIP and try to squeeze the call quality down as low as possible to save money.
As others have said, complain and make companies know if you leave that the poor support was part of the reason. |

My son had wireless boradband installed and was using a laptop with it but asked if I would sort him out a pc and printer as I have a lot of redundant computing items. I did this, installed it at his house but the speed was so slow I rang his isp to check and they said they would improve the signal which would be a gradual process over the next 48 hours. Fine. I assumed from the accent the call handler and problem solver was asian and therefore based overseas.
Two mins later an incoming call to that landline arrived. The phone had only been connected when I installed the puter. A man with an Asian accent said it isnt the fault that has been reported that was causing my problem it is the antivirus. He then asked me to follow some simple steps into the bowels of the pc and indeed was able to demonstrate that there was a fault on the antivirus - which is all well and good had it been THE antivirus I had put on the PC. It was an old one long unused. So alarm bells started to ring. I told him the computer was clean and had nothing on the hard drive. Anyway he then tried to get me to go onto a website which was a remote office server. You know the sort of website where you can access your documents when in another place. I told him to get lost as he was scamming and I would not allow him access to the puter.
I rang the isp and told them of this scam and said that I believed that they needed to tighten up security with their call centres and that I believed that their call handlers were passing on information to scammers that a fault had been reported so they could ring up pretending to be the isp (or in this case msn) to get access to the computers private documents. ISP said this could not happen. I believe that is exactly what happened. How can you check anyones trustworthiness across several continents to entrust them with your clients personal information or be sure beyond a shadow of a doubt they werent selling information to their pals? I know scams could exist with any staff that was untrustworthy in uk call centres but it makes you think or why would the scammers use an Asian accent if they weren't trying to fool you into thinking they were an Asian call centre. The scam is based on the whole concept of asian sounding call centres in order to gain the 'trust' of their victims as we're all conditioned to associate a certain accent as being from a bona fide call centre
