As a musician he is terrible but the comedy factor is classic. He also does a fine kipper tie. |

"Michael Buble
Sting / Police
The Beatles"
U2, not so much a band as an ego and a delay pedal - truly fucking ordinary....
The Beatles - the world's luckiest pub band with Liverpool's answer to Andrew Lloyd Webber on bass...
Michael Buble - ughhhhhh.....
Cheryl Cole - the world's luckiest Woolworth's shop girl....
Oh, and Michael Jackson - complete wank except when Quincy Jones and Rod Templeton saved him from himself....
The Sex Pistols - a Bad Company tribute band with Old Man Steptoe on lead vocals...
People should lay off Mick Hucknall now he's resigned from News international.... |

Never could stand the Rolling Stones or the Beatles but loved Elvis. I personally think that the most aggravating, over-rated, talentless, twatty, and up their own arses band was Oasis. |

ha ha ha ha!!! spot on! LOVE the concise and accurate description of U2, but gotta take exception to The Beatles. Love 'em, just cant stand that plasticene-faced twee McCartney fella with his child-like lyrics and the well of bland music he's been tapping into since Lennon was killed |

siome interesting choices in here and some quite unbelievable suggestions like the beatles i mean how can they be classed as overated when they are the biggest selling group ever and still outsell most pop artists old and new to this day .same gos for elvis.you dont have to like them but many millions do .there are many groups that i dont like like oasis and take that but again there are millions that like them and they are very succesfull so who am i to say they are overated if ppl like them great we cant all like the same stuff it would be a dull world if we did |

I think its all down to personal choice really but I dont rate Take That at all ,and Mick Hucknall, hmm saw him support UB40 in 1985 and didnt like him and havent since.I have to switch him off if his face appears on TV.I dont understand how the Beatles can be classed as overrated,as popular music wouldnt be here if it wasnt for them |

Nooo never Michael Jackson, ok he was a man with 'issues' but he was amazingly talented. I never liked Elvis but again he was an icon, along with the Rolling Stones and the Beatles.
I think Kurt Cobain was overratted. I quite liked Nirvana and Kurt was ok, but not a rock icon for me |

I do think that all the above have written, produced and performed SOME noteable songs.
But do those songs take them to 'music legend' status ?
Their success I believe has been driven more by good timing, a public desire for change, good PR and marketing and in two cases large amounts of sentimentality rather than their musical abilities.
So are they really legendary or do we just believe them to be on the back of a few good songs and what a well oiled media machine telling us that they are ? |

Trendsetters get elevated to legend status.
Elvis, certainly was a trendsetter.
Madonna, while may be not a great singer, she wrote and composed her own songs and was highly self promoted. It was all her own work.
The Beatles and the Rolling Stones lead the British music revolution.
I would add David Bowie to this too. Bowie started fashions and trends then moved on to the next with ghostly ease.
He was dressing and acting "Punk" style, "Glam" style and "New Romantic" style before the full wave of the trend hit us.
Whether you like these people or not is down to personal choice, but put to a universal vote, these guys are up there with the stars |

but should they then be classed as cultural legends as opposed to musical legends then ?
i am not doubting any of your thoughts and actually do agree with you on most
did their music start the trend ? feed the trend ? or perhaps more cynically was it a bi product of the trend and some very skillful marketing ? |

You are mostly right as people tend to be "followers". However, I do think that we also have our own "personal legends".
How is legendary status evaluated? Does anyone know? |

I suppose too, that music sales could contribute, to the description "legend"
I mean, that back in the 60's, 70's and into the 80's, with vinyl being the main choice (maybe cassette tapes too), artistes had to sell millions of copies to achieve Silver, Gold or even Platinum status, in terms of sales.
That salesmanship and those figures fed into the growth and hype around each singer, band and so on.
Nowadays, Gold "sales" amount to 500,000 copies sold, due to competition from downloads and other electronic options.
Doesn't sound so good does it, in comparison to the "good old days!"
Or am I just getting old?? |

In my _iew they are very much cultural legends. There names will be imprinted on the world for evermore. No question about it.
Spin Doctoring, Marketing, PR'ing, call it what you like, but these people have been there and have done.
The very fact we are talking about them is all you need to accept |

"How is legendary status evaluated? Does anyone know?"
I think the definition of legend in this context is as follows :
'A romanticised or popularised myth of modern times'
To me, suggesting that it is a 'romantic' idea combined by with the marketing / media machine that elevates someone to legend status - not the quality of their music
So again they may be perceived as cultural legends but not musical ones ? |

Oh, I do accept it - it is one of them discussions that has no real definitive answer and I realised that from the outset.

it is all subjective, you cannot define music, what sounds fantastic to one person another will hate.
Hence you cannot also desine a musical legend, its all down to personal taste, one persons legend, is someone elses hate.

yup - hence why to me, it is the media and the PR machine who essentially define 'the legends' and individuals either buy into it or they don't
i don't hate any of the acts i mentioned initially, i just don't believe on their music alone they deserve 'legend' status.
as part of a wider cultural movement, maybe ?! |

ooooh a lot of eclectic tastes in here....
And in my mind there lies the problem in defining what is legend and what is dross....
Each individual has individual likes and dislikes...........
Majority of "legends" or is that "Leg Ends" are down to mass media production......
Personally, if you can write a song, play an instrument and not afraid to go out on a stage in front of a single figure audience then your a legend for having the balls to do it.....
So many so called legends have NEVER sang live to an audience......It is so easy to walk into a studio and have engineers make you sound perfect even when you cannot put 2 notes together in the same key.....
Even easier to walk out on to a stage with a head set on, mime, and follow instructions from a sound engineer through your ear piece....whilst he plays a CD.
So many of the bands mentioned above have done it the hard way....by going out on the road and working for 10-20 years or so gigging small venues until they build up a support big enough to play larger venues....
Metal......PMSL very many metal musicians are in fact classically trained and can play anything put in front of them....what they choose to play is their own rendition of life....
My own opinion on some of the bands mentioned above...
U2...Started out in life as a good band, grew to stadium size proportions and then sold out....their sound recently hasn't changed..The Edge still plays the same guitar riffs on more or less every tune.....
The Beatles.....Lennon & McCartney are legends...however, do not mistake their early material for anything they wrote after 1967....Sgt Pepper, White Album and Revolver g odown in history as the best albums written.
Madonna....highest selling FEMALE artist, never rated her. Poor vocals and same weak lyrics....
Rolling Stones.....Are still touring that is legendary
Michael Jackson....The ultimate stage perfomer...Thriller is still the biggest selling album EVER
Queen....Hold records for playing to the biggest audiences at a single concert and I don't mean multi-band festivals etc...quite easily filled stadiums weeks in advance....
Oasis.....Jumped up little twats who spent more time fighting than performing. Shame because they produced some good music.
Someone mentioned MeatLoaf....Big Marvin had a tremendous voice through the 70's/80/s and 90/s. He no longer has the puff to carry it through now.
Guys like Michael Buble, Harry Connick Jr etc make money performing Frank Sinatra songs....come on where is the talent in that...
My 10 bob's worth |

Dont know why Janis Joplin is in the hall of fame, with Elvis and Malcolm McClaren none of them did it for me - also not keen on u2 but recognise why they are popular. I didnt like John Lennon solo and always felt he had a really mean streak in him. I didnt appreciate Dylan yet he has written some of my most favourite songs for other artists.
I still hold the opinion that if you can sell a record that appeals to someone then kudos to you. Most would give their right arm for a one hit wonder! |

U2... bore the tits off of me and have done nothing to warrent 'legendary' status.
Bands like The Beatles and The Rolling Stones were at the forefront and deserve their status whether you like their music or not (if not - you must be tone deaf lol).
Good tip - die young and you'll be a legend!
Jim Morrison, John Lennon, Bob Marley, Kurt Cobain, Jimi Hendrix...
There's not one of them I would deny of their status though. |

Not just since Slash left,,,, Guns'n Roses only have Axl left...
The rest formed Velvet Revolver.
Thin Lizzy were a very inspirational band to majority of todays twin guitar rock bands see Metallica for instance.....
However,,,,,,,the current lineup only features Scott Gorham from the 70's lineup.... |

The 'problem' I have with The Beatles is that in spite of (to me) excellent songs like 'In My Life' , there was so much bilge pumped out too that (again, to me) kinda counteracted some of their better works. |

He's not so much overrated as that I just don't get him... Bob Dylan
I agree some of his lyrics are brilliant but I just can't listen to him. Sorry!
Also the Sex Pistols, I love 'Bollocks' but it seems UK Punk is going to be remembered for this manufactured band when the real musicians and pioneers were The Clash, Buzzcocks, Television etc. |

ha! spot on! pseudo-intellectual twaddle, like radiohead....
and dont get me started on genesis and phil collins - pretentious AND bland, quite an achievement, although Brian Eno managed to hide his light under a bushell until he ditched the makeweights and went solo.
And as for my earlier McCartney grumble..... his good work came when it was tempered or enhanced by working with Lennon. As soon as they went their separate ways, it all went wrong. I present Wings as first exhibit for the prosecution m'lud...... |

3 out of 4 ain't bad - Springsteen deserves his legend status though..."
OK, some more...
The Rolling Stones - regularly shit since 1972...
Led Zeppelin - blues for people with nothing to be miserable about and folk for people who never leave their hotel rooms...
Oh, and the all time truly nauseating undeserved legend. If I ever catch up with the stupid bastard who shot John Lenno I'll cut his bollocks off for saving Lennon from exposing himself as the self centred, narcissistic heap of wank he was. Singing Imagine in public should be a capital offence in any civilized country, and any man who could live with Yoko Ono without pointing out that she the artistic depth of a yak fart deserves to spend the rest of his life at the Ayatollah Khomeini Memorial Reformatory for terminal wankers....... |

You're right...I heard Susan Boyle singing 'Wild Horses' and it was amazing.
Problem is, nothing has really been original since the late 70's (with the odd exception). By then, all forms of music had been recorded and since then everything has been 're-invented'. Most 'classic' songs were 'ripped-off' from stuff that'd gone before. 'Stairway To Heaven' was ripped off from a lounge Muzak tune...to name just one. Bob Dylan wrote poetic lyrics but was a folk singer inspired by music from the 50's. The electronica of the 80's had been done by Kraftwerk in the 70's...as well as the 'prog-rock' bands.
Nothing is truly new anymore...but you can re-hash and serve up something that will be seen as 'new' by a young audience. |

Not crap but over rated and over the hill, although it would be fair to say I think Lennon was truly, spectacularly ordinary as well as being a narcissistic twat.
Today, while driving to a work appointment, I'll listen to a mix of blues (you know, played by black people), some good seventies rock, and, inspired by the people who hate Phil Collins, the only decent band he ever played in, Brand X.
On a general point, the unoriginality argument is always fun, and in honour of it I'll listen to Strange Things by Sister Rosetta Tharp, which I think means I win the originality game (clue - it was the first rock and roll record...) |

"I sometimes think that we force ourselves to understand or like some music as at the time its cool to do that and if you ain't in the gang then you're nothing but square man!"
So true and it's usually around puberty. Suddenly pop music is for kids and the cool kids are going to school carrying albums by rock acts. It happened to me.
Eventually I got over the silliness and reassessed what I liked about music an why. I was also a musician so got to know the tricks of the trade and the processes that are a mystery to the public but common to most bands.
Look at the indignance when there was that autotune palaver on X Factor. Yet nobody has a problem with John Lennon double-tracking his voice to "autotune" it, or Diana Ross on all those Motown hits, or George Michael, or anybody else who cheated in the recording studio, then sprinkled studio fairy dust all over their product before it was ready for manufacture and marketing. |

Double tracking is not the same as autotune.
Double tracking was invented by Les Paul - listen to his recordings with Mary Ford and you'll hear he is perfectly in tune on every line. Indeed, his requirements for a solid body guitar sprang in part from the need for it to be reliably in tune all the time (when double tracking) and to have low noise levels (via humbucking pickups from 1957) so that noise levels weren't too high. Double tracking enables all sorts of clever stunts - Mike Oldfield's Tubular Bells is a seminal example, and no-one ever accused Oldfield of being tone deaf.
Autotune fixes it when players can't play or sing in tune. So some tuneless X Factor muppet (yes, Cher, and Cheryl, Matt, and all the rest of you, I'm looking at you) sings like a complete shambles, and gets it fixed by someone with a keyboard and a frequency analyzer.... |

Bowie often doubles tracks his voice in different keys. Was also one of the first to use a gate on a snare drum. When Robert Fripp played guitar on 'Heroes' he was asked to just go in the booth and play something without any info,it was recorded and the tape cut up and reassembled. Boys keep swinging was recorded with the band members playing the wrong instruments. To be fair tho a lot of the credit has to go to Tony Visconti, Brian Eno and Carlos Alomar |
