What is it with the explosion of coffee shops and types of coffee?
How important is coffee to your life? Do you prefer the chains, the quirky independent, a favourite stall or as cheap as possible?

I like the quirky independents. There's two that are my favourites. One in a delicatessen and the other is decorated like the Mad Hatters Tea Party and all the cups are bone China, none of which match. It's fabulously different. |

I don't drink instant coffee and rarely have it at home. My favourite is a local independent. The coffee is great and the owner is always so enthusiastic about his coffee and wants you to try new types (free sample, no obligation). If ever I'm in town and he's open, that's my first choice |

I'm probably paying more for quirky but both the tea and coffee is tasty with lots of choice. |

I avoid the big chains, when I hear someone ask for a skinny decaf caramel latte with extra froth and a shot of organic goat cream or whatever I know I'm going to be waiting 20 minutes for an espresso |

We prefer the independent coffee shops , they seem to care a bit more , and appreciate your custom . It's a great place to catch up with friends a while away a free hour or so while enjoying a nice coffee or two  |

I love coffee and I really enjoy coffee shops.
When we moved to the UK we noticed that British people use pubs in a similar way to how Americans use coffee shops. When I would normally have met a friend or work colleague at a coffee shop in the U.S. I found brits recommending the local pub instead. It's an interesting cultural comparison for me.
My favorite coffee is from a chain that they don't have much here (and when I've had the coffee here, it taste very different and not nearly as good). So in the UK I tend to like any place that will serve me filtered coffee because I can't stand espresso and americanos  |

I like the sentiment but I hate you right now. The queue for the free coffee at Waitrose ruins my shopping experience. One queue blocks the entrance, the other makes the queue at the bakery section longer and people leave the used cups on the shelves. |

The UK shit out really because we never had a coffee culture so the one that has grown dramatically over the last 10 years has been at premium prices
Go to Mediterranean countries and save for a few tourist traps, you'd never see a Starbucks, Costa, Caffe Nero et al
Why ? Because those countries have had a coffee culture for years - short coffees as opposed to long - and would think that €2-€3 for a shot of coffee was highway robbery

Oh god if I neeeeddd coffee then I will use them, but if I have a choice then I'd rather go for something a bit different and pay a bit extra. Tho price doesn't always reflect quality. I'm finding McDonald's coffee is doing it for me at the moment. Tho a clown with bright red hair coukd be considered quirky lol. |

I love the smaller, independent shops. My favourite haunt sells lovely coffees cheaper than the big chains, lovely cakes and bread made on premise and does lots of work within the community (fundraising, cleaning of neglected areas, selling local produce, hosts support groups for bf mothers etc). I like McDonald's coffee also though. |

It's a far more civilised affair in Salisbury. ...there are 4 different places in our waitrose where you can get coffee so the queues never seem to get that long |

What I don't understand is why so many people drink coffee on the go.
Do tea drinkers do the same?
I have on one occasion, on my way home one morning, from meeting someone.

I like to have fresh filter/cafetiere coffee every morning and tend not to get coffee whilst out... If I do it tends to be at somewhere quirky and interesting. Believe 100% in sustainable and rainforest alliance/fairtrade coffee. |

I absolutely love coffee. Red hit Americano with hot milk on the side if I'm out and fresh ground from a cafetiere at home. Sadly I can no longer tolerate caffeine  . Decaffeinated isn't the same but I drink it.
We go to a small independent shop and have never found coffee as good elsewhere. |

Let me explain this to you. I have a little extra money. It is not enough for a deposit to buy a flat, or move to a better rental property, or go to into further education, or buy&run a car. It is enough to buy a latte with, which is something I enjoy, so that's what I do.
To the OP, I come from a big coffee culture and will drink anything and everything. Being in a coffee shop is not all about the coffee, is is about the chat and company (and for those solitary drinkers, internal monologue counts).
When I first came to the UK the coffee situation was abysmal, you couldn't even get good filter coffee. Though some greasy cafs had very very yummy (instant) coffee, sometimes in milk. I'm with you now OP, it's swung the other way, it is overkill. Having said that, I do like going to pretentious cafés. The thing that annoys me the most is luke-warm coffee. |

I still remember being beside myself with rage in a coffee place, back when i could drink in them, because of the price of a cup of tea. Standard size £1.80, large £2.50. All you get is more hot fucking water! It's the same mother fucking tea bag!!! i don't go to coffee shops anymore.. |

We use coffee (or the decaffeinated version that passes for it) in a similar way. We've become friends with the owners of the shop we use and some of the regulars. We read the papers, chat to other people, swap views, socialise etc. I spend a lot of time with my women friends over coffee.
Coffee is the glue that sticks it all together I suppose. |

Whilst I don't hate coffee, I typically prefer a nice cup of tea. Just brought up like this!
If I'm feeling super tired and not concentrating, I may get a coffee but I'm honestly happy with the most basic of the basic.
I can afford better, I'm just content with free coffee from the work kitchen! Maybe I have just not been enlightened by all you coffee pros |

There is a little independent in Southend and the place is lovely. Quirky, local art work on the walls, a book corner, toys for the children. No seats match, big squishy sofas. Roast their own coffee beans, serve it exactly how you want it. Sandwiches and salads all made on site.
They have no problem with me sitting their all day doing my coursework, and bring me fresh coffee every couple of hours.
They also do a suspended coffee scheme which I always buy. Unlike the big chains they allow the recipients to drink inside where it is warm and dry. |

I rarely visit coffee shops. I don't like them at all. I have never been out and fancied a hot beverage. If I am thirsty I'll buy a water.
Hilary on the other hand could spend all day in one, but that's more for a natter than what sort of drink they'll be serving. |

Well.. to sum it up without reading the whole post myself lol..
Coffee is ;
1. One of the most traded commodities in the world,
2. Gives a great profit margin.
3. Addictive
4. People in the Uk. Do pay alot for it (but that wont change)
5. Doesnt require much investment (same for expanding business)
Is crucial to my life as it is my carefully chosen trade/lifestyle
But i must stress i avoid buying it. Only have it at work and stay caffeine free otherwise. |

I NEED coffee!! Babysitting some indanisians round the football stadiums of Manchester and Liverpool and not had one yet!

Coffee is very, very, very important to me as it seems the only vice I have left. I rarely use coffee shops independent or not as I can't seem to find one that local to me that has the passion needed.
Saying that I have found some local small batch roasters that deliver my expectations. So generally make coffee at home. |

Apparently they actually over roast the coffee beans in order to standerdise the flavour. (crap) |
