Indian sounding person phones and says they are from BT Openreach and getting reports of virus problems with my computer...they want to dictate something to type into 'run' instead of 'MSConfig' and at that point I bail and say 'No chance, I will find a number for Openreach and call myself...'

But can you call BT Openreach on a phone? Can you hell! Stuff it, odds on it was just a scam anyway I think.

Scam definately

I would have led them on saying that you had done exactly what they said while writing it all down just in case.

Then say "ohhh sorry I forgot I dont have a computer"

Yeah this is an old scam. I had one once where he asked me the same question about a virus on my computer and I said which one? He just kept going "you know, your computer connected to your broadband connection.." when I responded "yes I understand that but which one; I have three!" Bzzzzz

Yeah, it's usually 'that accident you had' (didn't have one) or 'the PPI you are owed' (checked already!).

Definitely a scam - I used to get calls telling me my windows set up was wrong (I own macbooks) further more I work in the IT industry. Always found it fun to toy and destroy them on the phone.

total scam, and frequently sucessful too, lots of people follow the advice to visit a website, 'oh just say yes to that warning message' then 6 months later find they have given away bank passwords etc. by which time of course they have forgotten about the phone call.

It's a scam. They're trying to make you install stuff on your computer that will record your private data (credit card numbers and the like).

Microsoft, Openreach, Apple, etc will never call you and ask you to do things with your computer. They cannot look at your computer and tell you that you have a problem.

Plus Openreach is a business to business service anyway - they don't interact with the public in any meaningful way.

Not a scam at all.... I'm still waiting for my new Mercedes from the nice people in Jamaica that called.

I received a phone call last week informing me that I had won a free car and vacation to Negril Jamaica. After I western union my taxes and fees , I'm waiting for my car to arrive this week....

We should be more trusting of the people who call us.... I still don't know what color I should pick.. does anyone find it odd they didn't ask me what color I wanted before delivery?

They wouldn't even deal with *your* business. As far as I'm aware they literally provide services to ISP's. They're the cable laying arm of BT Internet.

My partner would know if I had a virus on my computer - but only because he can remotely log in and check it. Which he does every now and again in case I've fucked things up.

I normally dont have the patience either but after about the 4th cold call of the day I tend to get into wind up mode....

"Oh thank you for calling about the accident ..... I think it must have been the really bad one as I seem to have blanked it from my memory"

"Sorry I cant really take your call as Im flying at the minute..... oh crap shit noooooo" drop phone onto desk.

"Ah yes that will have been the accident I had whilst answering the phone about the last accident I had whilst answering the phone"

Sorry to all call centre workers but I hate cold callers.

Oh this one .. I love them and change my story every time. Sometimes I have no computer or I have an apple and no windows.

Best one was when I let him carry on and acted like I was following his instructions ... then he kept asking can you see the screen with this writing .. so I said no my Mac won't allow it and then he was like no ur windows. So then I did it again and this time when it got to that stage I asked him how he got my house number cos I use a dongle and don't have wifi

Yeah he told me to go fuck myself and if I didn't know how he would happily show me. So I naturally told him I had more than a PhD in the art of playing with thy self and he put the phone down on me

This scam has been going on for years.

They play on the odds that the people they call are not computer-savvy and will believe the crap that they are shoveling.

There are similar scams online. You may visit a website and get a pop-up telling you that there is a virus on your machine, or some other such crap along the lines of 'programs slowing your computer down', 'adware' etc (that really your virus software should be picking up on) and will send you off to download some piece of software that you a) don't need and b) can't get rid of easily when you realise you've been duped.

They will direct you to download some software which will have complete access to your computer and it will scan through everything for all websites used and passwords, particularly any online banking details etc etc. It can also access and switch on any web cams you have connected.

It will also look like a virus and will appear to completely freeze your computer or some similar effect, which they will then charge you (via a credit card) to remove, they will spend enough time (removing it) to entirel scan through your PC.

Dodgy as fuck - there is a Internet fraud line you can call to report, or contact your ISP/phone line provider for further details.

I had a very Indian sounding man called Brian Smith call me from Microsoft telling me I had a virus.

I kept him on the line hanging for over 40 minutes, I checked every 10 minutes and the silly shit was still hanging on waiting for me to "switch my PC on and get on the Internet".

After 40 minutes I told him that I was actually tracking his call and would report him now I had tracked him.

His response was "I'll fuck your wife and children" then hung up.

I reported him and BT said they would block the number from calling anyone within the UK, but they also said it would take nothing for the scum bags to just set up a different number.

No business will ever call you like this OP - always treat it as a scam and say you will call back. If they called your land line just make sure you have a real dial tone before dialling out, maybe make a test call first to another number before attempting to call whoever supposedly called you.
