How much would you pay?

Depends if we are talking supermarket or pub.....
My fave wine is usually around the £10 mark at the supermarket. But I've paid £25 for the same bottle in a pub and paid up to £30 for a nice bottle in a restaurant. I used to drink a lot and then I would drink cheaper wine but now I drink on fewer occasions I treat myself to better wine.

I'm a bit of a wine snob, having been a sommelier in a previous life so I would expect to pay about £8 for a good bottle of wine...
don't ever be fooled by those gold silver and bronze awards that are stuck all over bottles of wine either...they are put there by the retailers rather than the wholesalers |

I had an amazing meal out once where we had a £40 bottle of wine (which is extortionate in my eyes) but it was the most beautiful red wine I've sipped and I still recall it! |

 That's me well and truly suckered in then! I thought they were genuine awards - won in blind tastings.
In all fairness though, using this (dubious) benchmark, I've not been disappointed with a bottle of wine in a long time.
The % system given by MW at Lidl (where I now shop) does seem to work well for me. Are they genuine ratings - or are they bogus too? |

Best wine story:
Was taken to Sketch off Regents St by a friend to say thanks for something. It was the kinda place where they changed the silver cutlery in between each course.
So at some point the wine waiter came across with this telephone directory full of booze and faced with the vast choice my friend airily ask the waiter to "Guide my selection."
The wine came back and complimented the meal very well. Good choice.
At the end of the meal comes the bill. My friend pulled a face when he saw it. What? What's the matter?
The meal was pricey (as expected) but the wine was £1,700.
Bit of a waste really, I can't tell the difference after £60-70.
I remember sitting on the toilet the following morning thinking, This is the most expensive turd I've ever shat in my life.

If a bottle of wine has a flat bottom i never buy it,as its probaly not good,always buy wine that i can put my thumb in the bottle of the bottle.Its meant to be better quality. |

I don't like wine, so about £0.
However, there is one bottle of cherry wine they sell at English heritage sites and I really like it so I buy it. I think its £12? |

I'm no wine buff by any stretch of the imagination. But the knack isn't necessarily the price (unless it's £2 romanian wine) but the type. Some wine just doesn't suit you. It's easier with 'New World' wine because it is identified by the grape variety, so you might like a 'Merlot'.
French wine is identified by region, so you might get an expensive french red and you just don't like that regions wine, something a 1/4 of the price from another region might suit you a lot better. |

I got in shit at work for stealing 2 bottles of House of Commons wine from a reception.
A senior manager spotted me once we'd gotten outside and the next day my boss had 'words' with me.
Jeeze, that wine tasted bitter.

I would go up to 20 if it was from a wine merchants rather than a supermarket. I've had both and there is a difference. Saying that..only the dear ones for special occasions. |

I always grub about in the cheap wine section in the supermarche at Calais where you could get a couple of litres of red table wine in a plastic bottle for about £2.50. Admittedly a bit rough but good enough to eat with a garlic heavy meal. |

I really don't mind how much as long as I like it. However as I am finding my palette is changing when it comes to lots of things and this most definitely includes wines I'd probably say £40 from a wine merchants.
Think what I should do is go to a wine tasting and really identify what is the best for me. |

We have got french friends, they are very 'foody' types. In France they buy box wine for a few Euros a litre and drink that with most meals. |

Agreed. In England even poorly tasting wine can be expensive but if you're drinking it with a strong tasting meal, it's a waste to drink expensive wine because you won't be able to appreciate its subtle flavours. I don't drink chateau lafitte with pickled onions. |

When first seeing H we drank copious amounts of red wine, we got to the stage of buying two decent bottles & four average ones for a weekend. After the first decent bottle you don't really give a stuff what the rest tastes like.
One particularly heavy drink off we disposed of all six bottles in one evening

The most expensive wine I've ever d*unk was with Business acquaintance who I'd become friends with. It was at the River Café in Chelsea. It was exquisite but cost £230. What's more amazing was he gave a quarter of the bottle to the waitress who served us. She got very emotional at the gesture |
