all over the place

Following Madchick's great post can i urge thats a great post ....can i also ask all the guys to go get a prostrate check as its a kiler too and you only need a regular PSR blood test ....no finger up your bum which turns a lot of guys off..

You have to ask for this test it is not part of a regular screening programme despite killing over 10000 men a year ..in fact prostrate cancer is now the most common form of cancer in men

Oh Check your balls for lumps cus scrotal and testiculer cancer are on the increase ....not that we really need encouraging to do that ...lol

little house on the praire

My son is 18 and ive explained to him about checking himself.

I really think that these issues for men and women should be addressed from an early age so that it comes natural to them without feeling embarressmentxxkarenxx

The blood test for cancer of the prostate you mention can only give an indication of the disease. The test can be negative when you have the cancer and postive when you dont.Called false negatives and false positives. Also specificity and sensitivity of the test are involved. This is one reason why the Government have decided against a nationwide screening programme.

The blood test (Called PSA prostatic specific antigen)is a useful tool in helping to make the diagnosis of carcinoma of the prostate but needs to be interpreted along with other tests...one of which is the finger up your bum.

Your GP will probably not refuse you the test but will guide you as to its interpretation and short comings before letting you decide.

yeah it is psa ....whatever it is go get it ...there are normal levels and i am sure if you have an abnormal reading it is a finger up your bum time ....the readings over a period of time will create a conatant average for you as an individual ..the worst thing you can do is nothing.Especially if you have anysory of sympton 7 out of 10 diagnosed can now be cured if caught early enough

Most elderly men die in this country with cancer of the prostate that they were unaware of until post mortem reveals it.

It can have a very slow progression and most are unaware and have no symptoms

The PSA test as im lead to believe is not a clear enough indication and may only show signs of inflammation which does not mean cancer.

If it means a finger up the bum for part of your screening then thats what you guys will have to put up with lol

There are 3 methods of inital testing, prior to biopsy and all have there faults even DRE ...the finger ....the problem with the finger is that it can miss small tumours ...it can not tell whether any abnormality is benign or otherwise ...

PSA is (according to canceruk) the best at the moment ..the reason it is not used for mass screening is that 15% of people tested can be given a clean sheet when they do have a potential issue ...the logic that the 85% of people where the test would be accurate must therefore not be screened is in my view wrong and a money saving exercise .especially as PSA test development mean the test is more accurate than it was when it first became available .

If PSA screening saves even 10 lives and i am sure it would be more it has to be worth it ...doesnt it ?

Anyway i am regularly tested and i recieve no objection from my gp in fact it is now a 6 monthly appointment

I totally agree......

And lets be honest, if all it takes is a finger up ya bum....... whats the matter with that, after all, it could save your bloody lives!!!!!!!

As for checking ya balls...... get a woman to do it for you. I do Mr Mads each month, and to be honest, it doesn't realise I'm doing it........ (Mind you, I tend to do it while he's snoring his head off!)

Same as breast checks, show the man how to do it and then get them to do it for you! much more fun!

Fabville !!!

As a nurse in this field "urology" i also urge all men to get tested, it can be and is a killer, if detected early enough treatment can be commenced or surgery if needed before it gets bad. A simple blood test thats all it takes.

As mentioned earlier, I don't think there is a man in the world who doesn't 'check' his balls regularly, I use it as an excuse! Don't you? lol... All jokes aside I would know within about a day if any lumps appeared there, I know I would.

Not sure I would with the prostate though, but if I could get a female doctor to stick her finger up my bum I'm all for it! Not sure she'd be all that happy with the ensuing hard on though...

Apologies for the lowering of the tone on what otherwise was a serious and informative thread!

We do know why you blokes always appear to be fiddling with ya balls.

As for the finger up the bum....... I don't think anyone would be shocked by the ensuing hard on...... providing you didn't levitate off of it!
