After seeing in the news today about the devestation Jade Goody is having to face at being told doctors can only prolong her life, I thought I would ask that all the women on FAB make sure their cervical smears are up to date.
I beat cervical cancer 10 years ago and now get screened every year, without fail. My sympathies and thoughts are with Jade and her two very young children, and I can only say...... I know how she feels about the possibility of having to leave her kids without a mummy.
So...... being bossy here....... to all the women on FAB........ GO GET CHECKED. It doesn't hurt and it could just save your life. Remember, cervical cancer if caught at stage 1 is totally treatable. |

Thanks for that Maddie...I know mine is due again and I think any woman who is aware of what poor Jade is going through will be knocking down thier GPs door
My concern is that the screening age has been changed to 25,my friend who is 22 has been sexually active since she was 14 and has begged for a smear test but has been told she is far too young
As women become sexually active at an earlier age these days this seems ridiculous and im sure it has a lot to do with the cost rather than the safety of women
Good on ya Maddie for beating it mwah mwah mwah

I saw that too about Jade, so very sorry for her and her family
So as everyone is saying, get the checks ladies, also check for breast lumps and guys, we need to be checking ourselves down below too!!
Maybe instead if the gaps where the adverts are on fabs at present, maybe a few links to health issue sites might be useful, they will be free and easy access too |

I agree with lowering the age of screening. Up here in Scotland I think it's 21. I went for my first smear at 17 and by 19 I had to get treament and have been going every year since. A simple test can save so many lives. |

My daughter has had 2 of the 3 vaccinations so far..its not a complete barrier to certain types of cervical cancer but its effective against the most common
I don't believe it has anything to do with promoting promiscuity as some of mothers who have prevented their daughters from having it have said
Its at least some form of protection and I was happy for my daughter to have it |

Brilliant idea Bigfella.........
ADMIN..... are you listening.
As for other symptons........
Bleeding at any other time apart from your period.
Bleeding after sex.
Pain in your groin, above the top of the pelvic bone.
Any kind of ache in your groin or anywhere around your pelvic bone.
The other thing is: if you are under 25, ask for a female doctor to see you and tell her that you are part of the swinging lifestyle. I'd rather get a few raised eyebrows and possibly a browbeating about safe sex (hahaha) but better to get a smear than have it left til it's too late.
It's taken a terrible fate to befall a celebrity to get this message across. Lets make sure her life isn't in vain.

That is so sad and so scary, god knows what they all must be going through
I don't think the injection they have out now would promote promiscuity and I wouldn't have hesitated in letting my daughters have it done.
Thankfully I have not had to go through what someof you ladies have, but a scare frightened the live out of me enough to make sure I don't miss a check now.
Go get checked !!! |

Women... Get your smear tests done.
Have your mamograms
If there is a history of bowel cancer in the family tell your gp and go have a bowel screen test (males also)
men.... make sure you have yourself checked for prostate problems.
Check testicles regualar for lumps and bumps..
Surely a few embarrasing seconds of a test is better than the agony of finding something wrong and suffering the devastation of loss.

I'm just so glad this thread has reminded at least 1 person.
My kids were 11, 8 and 4 when I was diagnosed and I was single. Even though they are now alot older and mostly self sufficient, I will never forget how I felt about the possibility of leaving them without their mum.
So.......all you women...... please please please, go get checked. It's one of the only cancers that you don't have to worry about if you get checked when you should!¬ |

Wishy my lovely.....
Jade has terminal cancer. They can no longer treat it or cure it as it's a very agressive form and now in her groin, liver and bowel. They are going to try and prolong her life as far as possible so she can spend some time with her boys.
Her only prognosis now is death.

Yes I know hon, but I'm a firm believer in where there's life there's hope, albeit however slim that hope is.
The report I read said she has an aggressive form of cancer but she's hoping to try new drugs to keep it at bay but it must seem like she's swimming against the tide. Poor kid, I feel for her.
I lost my cousin to cancer some years back and once it got hold of her she couldn't fight it fast enough... all triggered through falling from a horse! |

i was 23 when i got told i had cin3 i had no symptoms nothing just went and had my smear test (i think i had one a few years back and it said i had to go back but never did?) i went along and i was told if i did not have the letz treament it will only be a matter of months before it turned into cancer. since then i get smear test every 6 months and i will always go to one no matter if i have symtoms or not cos as i found out u dont need any for things to change down there.
if u dont like smear tests or are scared of them just think of it as a kinky meet LOL xx |

In 2001 having neglected reminders for my smear I was at my GP's when she suggested as I was now 2 years overdue she would carry out the test that day, reluctantly and put on the spot I agreed....
THANK GOD I did it came back CIN3 I went on to have a Wire Loop biopsy and now even still have yearly smear tests.
As if that wasn't bad enough in 2005 having been back and forwards to my new GP with breast pain to be handed out antibiotics like they were Dolly Mixtures, one occassion to be told to wear a sports bra, this went on for a year until I was finally seen by a hospital consultant, after having mammogram and core biopsy taken to be told I had breast cancer.
Scary thing is that there was no lump to be felt and wouldn't have been until it was too late,if I hadn't persisted and insisted on being sent for tests God only knows what would have happened by the time this had been picked up at screening when I am 50 I shudder to think.
So not only are your smears important but also to be breast aware and make sure you are checked out should you notice or feel any changes.
Now I need a thumbs up coz Hubby does all the posting and this is my first ever time lol |

I had CIN3 and had the laser treatment. Unfortunately it came back and at the age of 31 I had to have an emergency hysterectomy.
I hadn't had any children as I'd never met anyone I wanted to have any with. I'd rather be alive now than leave children with a father having to explain why Mummy had to die.
I have to admit to being naughty though - I've not been back for a tunnel smear since! I know I should but I don't think I could go through all that treatment, poking and prodding again. |

Hi All,
Just popped over from the Scottish forum and bloody glad I did! (Mrs ek here!)
I had a regular smear test at the beginning of January this year and was told less than two weeks ago that I have CIN1 (pre-cancerous cells but a milder form that CIN2 and CIN3) - they're not going to do anything at this stage and re-do the smear in six months time. Before this I was completely ignorant about cervical cancer but have spent a lot of my time since doing research - i'd rather know what is going on and what MIGHT happen if and when the time comes.
I think the most annoying thing so far is that when I've told people they've said "oh, you'll be alright, your next one will be clear". Kinda coming out wrong, but it feels dismissive somehow and yes, I have everything crossed that the next one is clear too, obviously, but there is a chance, statistically, that it might not.
Mr EK and I have been chatting and we think that perhaps we ought to give swinging a bump on the head whilst all this is going on - what are your thoughts??
Most importantly, yes all women on the board, make sure you're up to date with your smears - there really is no excuse!
A still slightly shocked,
Mrs Ek xxxxxxx |

You mustn't worry too much (easier said than done I know)
Abnormal cells within a smear test can come from a different range of reasons.
1. They MIGHT be very early pre-cancerous.
2. A change of pill can be to blame
3. A change in the balance of your hormones can be to blame.
4. Pregnancy within last year can be to blame.
5. Thrush can be to blame
6. A kidney infection can also cause abormal cell structure (odd but true)
So..... not dismissing your feelings on this, but if the doctors and the lab are happy for you to wait another 6 months, then it is probably because the change is slight and they don't want to perform any unnecessary procedures if the cells return to normal.
Regardless of what the NHS is doing at the moment, there is a massive budget built into each local health authority for 'women's' cancers and they don't scrape on these.
The swinging is up to you.
I would say not..... but if you are having doubts about being sexually active with multiple partners, what about Soft Swing?
I do hope that you won't worry unnecessarily and if you just need someone to speak to, my mail box is always open.

Yes, the papers at the weekend are criticising her for carrying on with talking about it / doing interveiws etc ( when she is well enough) but there are two issues there.
1. She is providing for her childrens future that she probably won't see , the best way she can.
2. She is making women very aware of what we all should be making sure we do. |

i may be wrong here as i hav'nt really been following the story, but i'm sure i read somewhere that she was told 3 years before she knew she had cancer she had abnormal cells after a smear and chose to ignor the letter from her doc, now what i don't understand is why would you go for a smear if your not going to go for any follow up treatment if anything is wrong, i mean why just not go for the smear in the first place? and again if this is true, if she so worried about leaving her kids why not go get it sorted as soon as she was told something was wrong 3 years ago?! just my thoughts on the subject lol |

I understood it to be that she had 3 abnormal smears and treatment, from the age of 16, but then had a 4th which she didn't follow up.
Yeah ok...she should have gone, but I think she's paying for that.
Maybe the Dr's should have done something more before it got to that stage? |

From Sky News today.....
Jade Goody has been told that her illness is so advanced and spreading so quickly that there is little doctors can do to prolong her life.
She has now been given just months to live.
*Have all the women on here who missed their smears, now had them done or booked the appointments?*

Have to say it did make me feel quite strange when i heard the news this morning.
As i said previously jade was never my favourite person but since she has had the cancer i have nothing but admiration for her. Think it finally hit home today that a smear test really does make the difference between life and death. |

its a shame that something bad like this in the news has to happen to make people aware and start to do something about it smears etc (men included) as i think they are the worsed for for not checking themselves.
ignorance is a dangerous thing and takes lives so more should be done to make people get to the doctors etc more or a different approach should be thought of.
look at the adverts for smoking and the shock tactics on fag packets they are using now but theres not much is said about cervical cancer etc even tho it a bigger killer than we realize.
ive got to admit i check my self regular for lumps etc and always have since my dad died of throat cancer.
that made me realize were all human and anything can happen at any time so regular checks are a must and shouldnt just be done because something bad happens to someone close or in the news.
if everyone did this a hell of a lot of familys would not have to be torn apart and kids wouldnt lose their parents.
so the message is!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
DONT BE LAZY BY NOT CHECKING YOUR SELF OVER!!
WOMEN SHOULD BE CHECKING THEIR MANS BITS MORE REGULAR AS YOU KNOW HOW LAZY AND TOO PROUD THEY CAN BE!!
MEN YOU ALL KNOW YOU LOVE BOOBS BUT THEY ARE NOT JUST THEIR FOR FUN SO SPEND SOME TIME FEELING AROUND THEM AND IF YOU DONT KNOW WHAT TO LOOK FOR (GOOGLE) IS A WONDERFUL THING AND IM SURE YOU WOULD GET A LOT MORE RESPECT OFF YOUR PARTNER BY DOING THIS!!
AND PLEASE PLEASE DONT BE SCARED OF GOING TO THE DOCTORS IF YOU FIND SOMETHING!!

closer than you think |
I had a hysterectomy when I was 28 due to endometerosis (another horrible illness) and have always been told by my GP that I don't need a smear test as I don't have a cervix
So excuse my ignorance when I ask what is a "tunnel" smear?
Would rather be safe than sorry.

I had treatment 13 yrs ago for stage 2 and i had never had any symptons at all-my children were both under 5 at the time and i was worried sick. I had been clear since but 6 months ago after my regular smear i was told i had a slight change, just had another which shows very slight change and i have to go back in another 6 months. I would never miss a test and i can only say to those women who are either scared to go or think -i have no symptoms so why bother- GO AS SOON AS POSSIBLE!!!!

due to rotten and heavy and irregular periods as a teen - and the fact my mother has had various treatments for this disease (of which she has now been clear for a few years) I had my first smear at 18.
It showed changed cells and i had to have repeat tests every 6 months.
All these tests eventually came out clear - and i managed once to have the 3 years screen - to have abnormal cells again.
Because the tests end up showing ok in the end it is easy to become complacent and think that things will be fine and try and ignore the next test....of which it is now due so will be booking the appt on Monday!!!
It IS important - my mum may not be here if she had ignored her tests - so agree with all above statements GET IT DONE!!!

Exactly as Debz says..........get it done.
Jade is now in a hospice and has been bedridden since her wedding.
Cruel fate for a such a young women who should be partying, bringing her children up and enjoying her new marriage, all because she ignored the letters warning her of abnormal cells.
Lets all learn from this poor girls fate and ALL the women on Fab get checked.
ADMIN......... any chance of putting something up where the stupid adverts are gonna be? |

Guess maybe admin did not read this, or the message I sent them about the links to health sites? or maybe it could not be done for legal reasons... or maybe they will be doing it, it appears 'ads' will be back soon.

We as forumites might come at the bottom of a very long list of suggestions/niggles........
But.........
Cervical cancer screening should NOT.
FFS ADMIN.......... wake up and smell the coffee....... Swingers should get checked regularly for a range of problems but Cervical Cancer can kill........ shouldn't you help out by putting something on here even if it's just to remind the women to get checked!
**Maddie is preparing to be ignored**
As an aside....... Jade is bringing the christening of her children forward as she doesn't expect to live to the end of next week! |
