Being British is about driving in a German Car to an Irish pub for a Belgian beer, then on the way to your home, grabbing an Indian curry or a Turkish kebab to sit on a Swedish sofa and watch USA shows on a Japanese TV. And most of all being suspicious of anything foreign. Oh and Only in Britain... Can you get a pizza to your home faster than an ambulance. Only in Britain do banks leave both doors open and chain pens to the counter. Also supermarkets make sick people walk to the back of the shop for prescriptions whilst healthy people get their fags at the front of the shop. We might be British, but by fuck we're funny!

Well as I am part English, Irish and Scottish (dont ask which bits are which lol )

I am proud to be British.. I grew up expected to stand every time the National Athem was Played, and am very much a Royalist, my family on my Dads side pretty much all are servicemen and women.. So brought up very much that we are a proud Nation... My Dad still gets very depressed that we are no longer such a great Nation.

I am Proud to be British and get very upset when I see it crumbling around me day in, day out.

As nobody sprung my trap I'll just show off any way.

It is sometimes stated that the Union Flag should only be called the Union Jack when flown from a naval vessel in port.

This is incorrect, as in 1908 a government minister stated, in response to a Parliamentary question, that "the Union Jack should be regarded as the National flag" thus both terms are now acceptable in common use.

The term 'jack' is most likely to be simply a diminutive that shows a smaller version of something, so a Union Jack was a smaller flag flown on naval vessels.

British lesson over.

I don't think it's compulsory for a 'jack' to be a smaller flag but it derives its name from the jack staff which tends to be small and so couldn't carry a large flag.

What makes me proud to be British? The fact that we are who we are as a nation - and the whole world knows it.

We are made of such diverse culture, such contrasting backgrounds, and yet in the face of the rest of the world, we stand together to BE British.

I'm proud that us Brits are whoever the hell we want to be

Oh and according to recent sex research (look up Sex Diaries Experiment) we have the most diverse range of emotionally based sexual fantasies of all the tested countries.

If it in reference to the Union Flag being on a naval ship the work Jack would be from the term Male sailor as they were know in the olden days as "Jacks" for males and "Jennys" for females. Which would make sense as in them days only males served on ships as was believed bad luck for women to be on a ship

Don't be fooled into believing that the French always get their own way when they strike or take to the streets, block roads etc.

Their infamous 'Tour de Force' often fizzles out like a damp squib, they recently held massive protests about spiralling fuel prices in the Lyon area, the result?......Prices still went up by nearly Eight percent since the New Year.

You often hear about their protests, you rarely hear about what they have actually achieved.

Union Jack was in use before the jackstaff even existed on ships I believe. The origin of jack is a bit of a mystery, but the size one gets my vote. Not all Union Jacks are small, you're dead right.

You mean about the Cross of Saint George?

Well, he was a russian who never came to the UK, so dunno why they call it that for starters.

Then there's the fact that the flag was actually brought over by Genoa'es money lenders, (from the city state of Genoa) and placed above their shops as a way of avoiding paying taxes to the English Govt. So it was used as a device to enable tax dodgers (criminals) to commit crimes.

Is that the same French who surrendered during WWII?

Yes and its the same British public that has been surrendering to our successive governments ever since! R

I'm sure anyone who considered themselves British would point out there's a world of difference between 'surrendering' to your own government and surrendering to a foreign, invading power."

Absolutely, one means theres a good chance of getting killed if you don't, along with your family.

The other means you may, just may, have to appear in court. R

Why's that ?

You try walking down millfield during the day and you will find out. Go into town more foreign than english. My youngest at school so many polish coming in and the teachers spend more time teaching them because they dont speak english than the rest of the class."

ne'er mind next generation they will be as British as you are.

This is why we are British:

We shall go on to the end, we shall fight in France,

we shall fight on the seas and oceans,

we shall fight with growing confidence and growing strength in the air, we shall defend our Island, whatever the cost may be,

we shall fight on the beaches,

we shall fight on the landing grounds,

we shall fight in the fields and in the streets,

we shall fight in the hills;

we shall never surrender, and even if, which I do not for a moment believe, this Island or a large part of it were subjugated and starving, then our Empire beyond the seas, armed and guarded by the British Fleet, would carry on the struggle, until, in God's good time, the New World, with all its power and might, steps forth to the rescue and the liberation of the old."

While the french waiter asked the first german office to set foot in gay paree - A table for how many sir!

The french claim that the rhost beef cant cook!!!! no we cant - weve been too busy fighting your f*** wars!!!!!

Speaking of taking it up the arse, Stephen Fry told a delightful story on QI.

Winston Churchill was receiving his morning brief from his PPS.

PPS: "A delicate matter Prime Minister. One of your ministers was caught 'in flagrante' with a Guardsman on the Heath last night"

WC: "On the heath?"

PPS: "Yes Prime Minister"

WC: "Last night?"

PPS: "Yes Prime Minister"

WC: "It was minus six last night"

PPS: "Indeed Prime Minister"

WC: "Makes you proud to be British"

Not much of a royalist as im english not german.

What makes me proud to be english ? i guess it would be our sole stand against the germans in 1940 prior to the americans coming into the war later. Also the Raf and battle of britain. Not only did we defend our island from the germans invading, we also, sent to troops to europe, taking the fight to them and being a part of liberating Europe from german oppression.

Today what mekes me proud to be english/british ...Nothing at all.

I am proud to be British, and proud to live in The United Kingdom of Britain and Northern Island, but it is very hard to define.

The history countryside, language and people are certainly one aspect of it. The diverse and fascinating regional differences are another part of that.

I don't try to let political issues cloud that, politicians and policies come and go all the time.

That's so different from Bedfordshire - we just don't feel that same sense of county pride. Bedfordshire is quite a boring, droll place tbh.

As for being British, I don't feel WW2 has a lot to do with why I'm proud to be British. We've given the world so much more than just fighting a couple of wars. Too many things to list here but I think one of them deserves a mention - our sense of fair play. In competition I like to win but only if I win fairly - there is no sense in winning by deception as you haven't really tested yourself to the full if you haven't given it your all.

The french can afford to strike because the english pay for them to do so through europen subsiduaries each year for example we pay millions to to the french farmers with nothing in return why i do not know, have to ask your euro mp that.

If the English went on strike. Employers would simply bring in cheaper contract workers. I agree everyone has the right to strike/protest by law. Its just for some they can not afford to.

NO if the americans had not entered into the war when they did we would all probably be walking around in jack boots today. We are even to this day still paying of our loan to america for the armoury weapons tanks used etc etc.

However the battle of britain involved no american involvement or loan the spitfire was an english design with a rolls royce engine.

EU Subsidy rates for French farmers are no different than EU subsidy rates for British farmers, or for Italian farmers, or Irish farmers....

They are standard rates......doesn't make them right, but to assume the French earn more to leave a Hectacre of land fallow than a British farmer just isn't correct.

I think as you made the allegation that French farmers are paid more to keep land fallow then the onus is on you to prove the point.

The EU keeps land fallow to ensure that farmers do not change the use of the land involved so that in subsequent years it can revert to agricultural use if and when it is needed.

There are differing rates for 'Set-aside' land layover depending on the crop that was previously grown there.

In any case the 'Set-Aside' scheme has all but been scrapped now, as cereal production is badly needed now the EU has expanded......it is now far less common than it was in the 80's and 90's.

You need to take more notice of NFU data than UKIP data, which is often misleading to back up their call for EU withdrawal.

okay without stats its pretty clear to see. would you lend 100 punds to somebody on the understanding you get back a tenner.

The british pay much more than any other european country and get little in return, other than mass immigration.. Theres a lot of old boy etonian old boys somwhere stuck in a timewarp thinking were still an empire.

In such dire financial times surely every country and its politicians should sort there own house out as charity should begin at home.

Us on the other hand under cameron well he squeezes every penny he can out of us telling us theres no other way as a result of labours woeful economic mismangement of the country whilst simultaneousy tripling foreign aide which leaves us the taxpayer diggin further down to our knees for a spare bit of change. look at pakistan and the floods for example ...If they can afford nuclear weapons they can afford to sort out there own problems.

camerons response to donations to pakistan was well if we dont help them finanacially we could be turning moderate muslims into extremists ones ?????

What would make me proud of being British is that if every migrant to our country could, and would, learn and speak the English language.

What would make me as proud is that if every indigenous (take that to be white, if you must) kid born here could do likewise (i.e. know how to read, write and speak the English language properly).

Language is one of the main constraints.

The day that I see a young Asian girl walking hand in hand with her English boyfriend through the streets of Bradford, and nobody bats an eyelid, is the day I'll know it's truly really happened.

or the russians but as a single person Sir W. C. Gavananised Britain against Hitler While making decisions that kept the U.S.A.behind us until they entered the war

A TRUE BRIT and GREAT MAN

No matter his political party

Operation Keelhaul (46/47) was dubious to say the least

I Think you will find the war ended in 45 lol"

Your right it did. but the repatriation programme that churchill agreed to at Yalta didn't really start until 46.

But then churchill sold the white russians and cossacks down the river.

his decision to keep the anti soviets to use at a later date ensured that a lot of brits and americans spent sometime in the gulags too

not really cricket but then he was half american

If they're so important to us, and I agree they are, why are we scrapping Harriers and Nimrods, mothballing or selling off aircraft carriers and closing RAF bases in Scotland?

Just to add and why are our troops so poorly equipped they have to beg for kit from yanks and food parcels from there families. Its also reassuring to know our waters our now protected by the french due to lack of any air craft carriers, Should any invading force head our way i wouldnt bet against them planning there attack on the day of the french navy finding something to strike over.

According to The Torygraph "A quarter of RAF trainee pilots are to be sacked in a cost-cutting cull that threatens to leave the Armed Forces short of airmen"

"Up to 100 student pilots will be told the news on Tuesday with some of them only a few hours away from becoming fully qualified to fly fighters, helicopters and transport aircraft.

The cuts will mean the waste of an estimated £300million already paid for training the pilots, plus the cost of redundancies. The training of RAF pilots can cost up to £4million a man.

There are fears that the sackings will lead to a shortage of helicopter and transport pilots on the front line in Afghanistan. "
