I actually feel quite sorry for people who say they hate Christmas. Yes it's commercialised to death these days but you don't have to buy into all that stuff. You always have a choice to just look on it as a time of for forgetting all the crap in the world and concentrate on those closest to you.

I push the boat out with traditions etc so that my children will remember how their old dad celebrated Christmas in the many long years ahead when I'm not around anymore. They'll remember how I used to stay up on Xmas Eve cooking the turkey getting slightly sozzled with my couple of bottles of red, they'll remember all the lights and trees I put up (loads of lights and at least 3 trees), then there's our annual Xmas Eve tradition of having completed all our preparation by the 23rd leaving the 24th to go out and do some fun Xmassy stuff as a family, the four stockings hanging from the mantle that go up on Xmas Eve. I love it all.

And not a Jesus in sight lol.

Im guilty m,lord

And yes, its a time for families and loved ones to get together and maybe remember those we have lost and raise our glasses.

I always feel for those who are alone

at that time of year and maybe include myself in that too.

And if i could , would gladly pass around some of that much needed christmas spirit

Christmas is over rated, commercialized and people are hypercritical. Yes ive done my shopping btut i havent gone silly i havent gotten myself in debt like some do. Why do people worry about others being on their own at christmas? Its only one day a year. What about all the people that are on there own the other 564 days why dont people invite them round then. I celebrated christmas had the decorations up and always made it lovely for my son, wasnt going to let how i feel rub off on him. Every year my mum insists i go round for christmas dinner and i go (begrudingly) this year ive told her im not going. I much prefer to spend it on my own in peace and quiet. Son and girlfriend are coming between christmas and new year and Jay will come when hes back from his daughters. Every year ive said to him id sooner him go there as he will be bored here.

I'd have thought the fact you refer to him as "arsewipe" suggests it was a really good time for you.

Think i do my bit all thru the year re people on their own, help out where i can and visit all me old darlings , who i love chatting to.

Its true in that we should be more neighbourly and help others a little less fortunate than ourselves and not restrict it to xmas.

Wishy: you've summed up my thoughts about Christmas time too. I get to have all my girls under one roof. The cupboard, fridge and freezer heaving with food. The lights on the tree, presents underneath, my daughters acting all nonchalant, as if Christmas is for kids but loving it and mum fussing around them.

It's my eldest birthday on New Year's Day and bar last year when I spent it with my dad who was dying, we spend that together too.

I too hope when I've fallen off my perch the girls will remember the happy Christmas' we had.

Ho ho ho!! LOVE this time of year!

I agree that the friends and family bit shoudn't be restricted to Christmas time. Don't get me wrong, I too keep in touch with all my nearest and dearest all year round. What makes Christmas special however is that EVERYONE has time to all be together at the same time without work or other commitments getting in the way.

To see my Nans face when she sees all 4 of her 'true' grandchildren (and the 6 'non-true' ones too) in the same room, at the same time is truly heartwarming. My poor Grandad's memory isn't what it used to be and every year he thinks it's the first time it's ever happened and is simply overwhelmed.

My fondest memories of Christmas past are of family get togethers (before my parents split). They were truly wonderful occasions without all the pomp and circumstance that some seem to apply to the festive season. Also without all the tacky, over the top, wastes of electric that alot of people feel the need to adorn their houses with. Just a good old knees up, sausage rolls and cubes of pineapple and cheese on cocktail sticks haha.

Oh and cucumber and onion soaked in vinegar and water of course.

I love family traditions.
