Vocation - Whatever.
Do you use it to define or describe yourself.
When meeting people ( not fab meets in particular ) do you say - Hi, I'm Celia. I'm a florist.
Do you behave one way in your job and change into YOU in your own time.
Is your personality you or do you curtail your inner self ? |

No, I don't allow my job to define who I am and I have a work persona and a private life persona - or as someone once put it, a business voice and a home voice.
There are 6 people (outside of work ) that know what I do for living - everyone else gets told a far more 'soundbite' friendly version of what I do. |

Way over Yonder, that's where I'm bound |
I chose my work as it is more than one expression of me. I don't introduce myself as my work but the question is usually asked in the first few exchanges.
I do use broad examples from work in lots of conversations, if relevant. |

Hi I'm Marcus and I'm "Lead PHP Developer and systems designer for..." I don't hide what I do, but Lead PHP Developer screams "GEEK!", it's not very sexy lol.
The other problem is, I don't see myself as a typical person in 'my profession' at all. I'm interested in, and do far too many things to feel like a coder lol.
So in general I am out-of-the-office Marcus even when I'm in the office, the only time that changes is during meetings with the big companies - IBM, government agencies etc. Then as soon as the 'meeting' is over I'll be bantering as normal and just being me.
So... no... my job doesn't define me, if anything, I define the job role - people prefer to talk to me rather than others in the department because they get a person, not a 'robot'
Of course for people who are nurses, policemen, teachers, brain surgeons, politicians would probably tell a very different story but - hey... I am who I am, wherever I am.

Does my job describe me ? No, but it has by its very nature defined who I am although I'm ok with that, as its moulded some of my colleagues into very jaded people, but I still manage to see the things that matter.
Do I tell people ? Not really, unless the conversation progresses and they ask what I do, but ill never introduce myself by vocation unless I'm in work where its rather obvious.
Do I curtail my inner self ? I have no choice. I have a job to do and a responsibility. My time off is for being who I want to be, and when I complete my service I will be a totally different character I believe. |

This modern world stuff has lead to an interesting turnabout where some people look you up (real world real name) and introduce you as your role and online persona, TwitTwat handle, blog etc.

I never volunteer what I do but don't mind mentioning it if it comes up in conversation. My partners have always said it was like being with 2 men - the day time fella in the suit comes home disappears upstairs and is replaced by the shorts and t-shirt one. I feel equally at home in each environment but can't stand any evidence of working life in the room I'm relaxing in. |

I never ask what the other person does for a living because all the advice on social skills has said not to, forgot this recently and asked a lady at a swinging club(who I was about to lay)turned out she worked in the local morgue, didn't get laid, killed the moment strangely.
I mentally delete any woman who asks what I do for a living in the first conversation because (how much does he make?)probably unfair. |

Don't think it's relivent to tell people what your ocupation is on here. If ppl don't like that, then tough, they know where the door is... I am here to swing, have fun, not discuss my private life with total strangers...... However saying that, I have made a few friendships on here who know about my past, work, personal life...ect! |

I have a very unusual job, and it isn;t 9 to 5.
Yes to a degree it defines me, but a lot of casual friends know no more than I work for the government - because the job is so unusual (even the job title is enough to easily track me down as there are less than 500 of us in the country) people generally find it extremely interesting and it's not a job it's easy switch off from so I don't want to talk about it all the time. |

I am officially a groundsman. Not to be confused with a groundworker who is basically a person who does footings and drainage on a building site, I maintain playing fields. So for me it`s preparation of pitches, cutting, marking out and erecting posts etc. There is also some gardening and minor building work (painting etc.) My particular speciality is the more heavy work carried out with a tractor or other similar machinery.
Recently we changed departments and have moved to the Countryside department and out new boss now says I`m a ...... senior estate worker |

Also, my job is just what I do, it does not define who I am |

My job is dull, but when I went to a comedy show in Leeds last month with my best nate from Uni, he told the comedian he was a civil servant. He got asked for more specific details, so my mate opened up and confirmed he is a senior manager for HMRC... the place went silent, so the moral of the story is don't admit to being the taxman! |

I dont tell people my job unless they ask....and im totally different in work i have fun with people and a bit of banter but im always ready incase things go from fun to serious and have to be pretty firm and make sure i get that across without being a bitch...and it can be a fine line at times and last thing i want is to aggrivate a situation so usually use a bit of charm.
Out of work im just dry n sarcastic n silly |

I work in a very specific niche industry and perform R&D in that. It doesn't trip off the tongue well, and unless you were involved in the industry you probably would not have a clue as to what (or why!) I do. A bit like Chandler in Friends. |
