"Would you agree to letting schools bring it back?
Was the threat of the cane at school enough to make you behave yourself?"
No it wasn't.
It was the fear of what my dad would do if he found out I had been caned... that's what stopped me! (usually) |

Yes, it was exactly that, the threat of the cane PLUS having to go home and tell my parents that I had had the cane. |

Good point, no use in punishment at school if it's not being carried over to home life, the kids are likely to rebel more against the teachers.
Not enough parenting is the real problem now. |

No, children will end up believing violence is the only answer, and corporal punishment is a form of violence."
Not sure that's true, children are more violent now since the punishment has stopped.
It doesn't have to be the only punishment either, but one option. |

We had the threat of the cane at school....and yet we brought both our children up without hitting them for discipline and we are not violent people. |

This thread came about because of something that happened at mt childrens school today
A teacher was reduced to tears becuase the whole class literally took the piss out of her
The whole class has a detention but Hubby said they should bring the cane back and maybe the kids would have more respect for someone who is trying to do a job under very difficult conditions, and would maybe think twice before repeating whay they did today

Yes, although I'm too young to experience it myself, i did fear my mum and dad, i new if i got caught doing anything wrong id be in the shit and id get the slipper or a good crack on the arse.
I truly believe the problem with kids today is they have no fear of anything, there attitude is "what are you going to do? you cant touch me" and they are right we cant.
Give the little feckers something to fear is what i say. |

But surely, children would have been at least as violent back when corporal punishment was allowed if you are right.
I think we have gotten too soft, trouble is, we have to be because some people don't know when to draw the line. |

No, and I wouldn't have hit them either.
the threat for our kids was taking away their "privelages " for want of a better word. Pocket money/ treats/ grounding them , that sort of thing.
It worked when my parents did it to me, and it worked for our children without any violence.
But, I still think the threat of the cane at school is a good deterrant. |

I smacked my kids and I used to line them up and run up the line giving them a 'clip round the ear' when they were all in trouble.
But I also taught them that figures in authority were to be respected.
I've got 3 kids, not one does drugs, drinks to excess or has ever been in trouble withe the police.
And as one is a lawyer, one a publican and one is waiting to join the forces.... my choice of smacking them can't have been that bad. |

I agree with it but think that in some sections of society it is far too late for anything to remedy the behaviour of some pupils, the bulk of the blame lies at the feet of parents, it wouldn't be a deterrent at all these days, it's very sad. Z |

Bring back proper prison sentences, power to teachers, the police, prison officers, doctors and nurses and anyone in authority and forget the classless crap that labour have tried to instill in us, and society might just remedy itself.

I would quite happily have given their teachers the right to use a slipper or a cane if they had asked.
As boarding school was involved with my children's upbringings, they also had a fair hand in raising them.
But then the threat of the slipper or the cane was usually a deterent in itself and I concentrated at school and got a good education.
With teachers no longer having ANY power, education can only be taught if the whole class wants to learn. |

I've never subscribed to this “deterrent” business, punishment has always been applied for the crime committed, in the USA certain states have the DP, it's not seen as a deterrent,it's punishment for the crime committed, and so it should be.
The hanging of Saddam was not seen as a deterrent to the Iraq's, it was punishment for the crimes he committed |

Nothing teaches you as affectively as pain.
Humans are the only animal that doesn't chastise its young by inflicting a short, sharp shock,be it a smack, bite or shake.
Where has this leniency got us?
Children being tortured or murdered by others, the old and vulnerable becoming targets for violence and ceaseless abuse, disregard for the public at large and their property and last but not least total lack of respect for their parents.
Its obviously no coincidence that this downward trend started in the early 70's the same time that corporal punishment was stopped in schools.
As for these parents who say "My children are always well behaved",sure they are, when they're at home,Violet Kray probably said the same.

I would say reinstate it but I presume the government took advice from people well versed in the positives and negatives and the negatives were higher so it was banned.
Now if you ask if violence breeds violence that’s a little easier as from my experience its yes. Surely there should be some better deterrent than beating the crap out of kids? Although it can be effective in some ways

We have 6 children, the oldest 21.
They have been smacked when needed, none of them have ever done drugs or got into trouble. They know they'd have been in much more trouble with us.
They'll never be too old to get a clip round the ear.
The problem is kids get away with murder at school and at home too. they go to court and get slap on the wrist, by the time they're 18 it's a way of life and sadly sometimes too late for them. they need to be taught from a young age.
Ours have always been told to earn respect you must always respect others and manners cost nothing.

As a teacher I wouldn't want to ever hit a child or threaten a child with violence but we have nothing to control behaviour with anymore because, as stated before the children know we can do nothing. I've been hit, kicked, bitten, bruised, punched, doors slammed in my face etc and with no parental back up we hit a wall. Where do the rights of teachers come in all this when children are being violent towards us and we can't even restrain them? |

Totally agree, something has to be done. The pupils run the class not the teacher. The kids seem to have all the rights, can treat you like rubbish and cause you physical and mental harm. But if you did it to them you'd loose your job and be in court.
Parents should be responsible for their children and teach them morals. |

I think corporal punishment harks back to victorian times when children were often physically brought into line. I don't think it has a positive effect on children today and other ways of punishing misbehaving kids should be used instead. It's very difficult though, as parents have to be notified in advance of any detention their kids are required to serve and I remember from my school days that an instant detention seriously screwed up my after-school plans.
A points-based system could be employed whereby kids are alloted points for each transgression throughout the year and then those points are calculated some way to remove grades from year-end tests/exams. The flip side of that is that kids can earn back those points during the year with community tasks. Let the kids take responsibility for their own actions and suffer the consequences if they break the rules. |

I went to one of the worst schools in the county....and was one of their most unruly students (hard to believe I know )
corporal punishment meeted out on a regular basis to folks...the headmaster prowled the corridors with a cane up his jacket sleeve....would let it drop and thwck people on the spot for the crimes....the deputy had a whole heap of them on the wall behind his desk....bit like a fecking gun cabinet!!!!
Only ever once sent to get caned....ended up drinking coffee in headmaster's office chatting about my future careeer choices...bizarre.
Anyway, I think that the erosion of respect in our young folks (respect for themselves, their belongings and for others) is not just the fault of bad parenting, but also an erosion in the rights of those in authority (police, teachers etc) to take action against kids when they're being asses....corporal punishment should never have been oulawed. However, now that we have been encouraged to become moaning litigious everytime a teacher, policeman, nurse, train conductor give us a funny look I just can't see how it can be reintroduced |

I have given mine a slap (and on more than one occasion) but have regretted it each time as it’s me who has lost control - she’s a child and learning control I'm supposed to be the adult in control. For that very reason I wouldn’t support bring it back to the class.
I have no problem with engaging and supporting the school with discipline but don’t always believe they have the time to listen and find out what actually happened so some children would be punished needlessly. I have forced her school to apologise to her previously for the behaviour of one of the substitute teachers. IMHO - It’s a two way street - if children aren’t engaged and shown a level of respect you cant expect them to return it.

I bow to you for having to deal with all of that with tied hands,Im a nurse and have had my fair share of violence in the work place but im aware that some of that is due to confusion, pain and anxiety which when settled will 9 times out of 10 result in profuse apologies from a person
Its not directed at me because of lack of respect and downright bad behaviour or showing off in front of classmates,we have back up of a zero tolerance policy and some very large security guards that do a great job for us,something that schools don't have, well ours does'nt |

The “Compensation Culture” we're experiencing has come about due to the abolition of the legal aid system.
Companies / events / organisations are not fearful of being sued, it's the insurance companies fearful of having massive payouts that impose such strict clauses, or refusing to provide cover in the event of such eventualities. |

Maddie... The more I read the more you strike a cord! Our cradle to grave society that has been Bourne out of the last 14 years has totally ruined respect in this country. As someone else said, kids know they can't be touched and detention is only allowed after consultation with parents (locally) and parents refuse to believe that "scum" teacher!!
That is why kids are like they are! Cos the parents have been like that and it perpetuates itself!!

At my very first school, we were slapped across the legs...it wasn't really the pain that made us cry...but more the embarrassment of being called out.
There is no way they could ever bring it back now...the kids would drag the teacher outside and batter them.

As Tamzins husband, I can say it has taken all my self control on a number of occasions not to get involved in what has happened to her in school.
To have this amazing and gorgeous woman come home in tears because a child has been hitting her or a parent has been abusive to her is very hard to take. She is frequently up until 2am working to HELP these kids, only to have it thrown back at her physically or verbally.
I too am too young to remember CP in school, but if I misbehaved it was going home I was bothered about because if my parents were told it must have been something serious and they would listen to the teachers!
Fortunately, it didn't happen often as I was model student and an angel in class! 0 |

"Its a known fact that violence breads violence. Going backwards isn't the answer to society's problems with the youth of today.
So how come its got continualy worse since corporal punishment was abolished?"
I don't know if it has its that more things are reported these days. |

I (jon) received corporal punishment at primary school (usually the ruler) and has already been stated when I got home and told my parents that usually meant I got another slap I do truly believe this kept me in line as I was a right toe rag. This however made me very soft when I moved in with Lolly so in the 13 years we have been together I have only raised my hand once to one of my step sons and he was 17 at the time I slapped him and gave him a red cheek. The result for me was 4 hours in custody with a caution for assault (the only trouble I have ever had with the Police). I am still a advocate of bringing back corporal punishment but in this day and age its unworkable. |

"Would you agree to letting schools bring it back?
Was the threat of the cane at school enough to make you behave yourself?
No it wasn't.
It was the fear of what my dad would do if he found out I had been caned... that's what stopped me! (usually)
Good point, no use in punishment at school if it's not being carried over to home life, the kids are likely to rebel more against the teachers.
Not enough parenting is the real problem now."
I agree with you 100%! |

Of course it has,old folks were able to go out without fear at any time, day or night when I was a kid.
Teachers very rarely,if ever, got hit by their pupils.
The police seldom got abused,if they did it was front page in the local papers,as was a punch up.
Anyone who walks around with their eyes open can see gangs of louts in situations likely to cause intimidation, usualy drinking alcohol in public.
To think that it hasn't got worse could only be possible by anyone who hasn't known better times! |

Rose tinted glasses you have on there. There has always been violence in schools ask my dad who got assaulted as a teacher when i was 5 by a pupil. The good old days weren't so good ask anyone who met the Kray twins. |

As I said, regarding teachers,"very rarely,if ever did they get hit".
Today its much more prolific and not just by older pupils either,as has been documented in earlier posts.
As for the Krays,I wonder how long a group of Hoodi Chavs would have lasted if they'd have started their antics in Vallance Road.
I bet they'd have got a bit more than a caution or an ASBO. |

Well the growth of the media from printed materiel to TV and now the net has put violence more in the public eye. The Krays are a notable exception as they did get publicity in the past. Anyway i hope your dad recovered ok even if it was a while ago.
As for bad behaviour and the rest, well it didn't suddenly start when CP stopped. Look at the states where the death penalty is still used. don't see them being all peaceful and light! |

I agree 100% there is a VERY big differance between a short sharp shock AND the thought you were in for it at home for misbehaving and physical abuse! I got a slap on the legs from my mum or dad when i was being a little bugger and i got the "belt" at school but turned out ok, respect for authority has gone and it is shown in todays youth |

The U.S doesn't really count though as far as this debate is concerned.
Most of those in jail for violence play a mean banjo and a fair proportion of the rest are probably their own grandads.
I still maintain though that it got gradualy worse after the abolition of corporal punishment.
It probably didn't make much impression on the few out and out wrong uns but it certainly kept the borderline cases in check.
When you consider that most louts are cowards, there's nothing a coward fears more than pain and nothing that teaches you as quickly.
How many times have you stuck your hand in a fire? |

In fact one of the teachers magazines started a graph as corporal punishment was phased out (it was not just stopped!) and I believe the Government also looked at this. The lines on the graph formed a cross as the instances of corporal punishment fell so the instances of abuse to teachers and pupils alike rose!
It always kept me in line but todays little darlings know that they can't be touched and they ARE worse! |
