Yes. Not all of them but quite a few and in a variety of situations.

The first thing you realise is that there's a 'them' and 'everyone else'.

They're entirely at ease amongst those they consider to be part of their 'set' but, as recent attempts at widening the gene pool have shown, outsiders (Diana Spencer, Sarah Ferguson) don't last very long.

Job done. Thanks and so long.

You know this is one of the few topics that people's comments make me want to slap them. I can not understand not having respect for our royal family and find some of the comments utterly disgusting.

It's part of being British And the queen is still an amazing lady who has to be fair earned respect. Some people should keep ashamed of themselves

There are stats that prove they are an asset to the country, and others that prove they aren't..take your choice.

What is amazing though that in a modern, supposedly, meritocratic society many feel the need to bow, genuflect, and consider ourselves 'subjects' to the head of a family who have no claim to this idolatry other than they were born in to it. Oh well, if they like it..

Maybe she was used as a guinea pig by that lassie who won the Alan Sugar shite last week.

It'd be real circular flow of income.

Licence fee money is used to pay Sugar, his geriatric sidekicks and thon lassie wi' the big tits who used to work for porn baron David Sullivan.

They get together some prize money which the winner uses to develop a business which sends people to NHS hospitals to fix the damage she's done, whilst the Queen uses public money to fund a £5,000 a day hospital room for her daughter in law.

I totally get the point about living in a modern society where some traditions and conventions can seem outdated..

But I like to think if I wanted to show my respect to tradition and convention by bowing to someone, it would because I want too rather then feeling I need too and by living in a country whose freedoms allows me the choice I’m just grateful to have the privilege of choice ...

Yeah I’m still smiling at the folly of trying to punctuate an argument by suggesting books and internet sourced information hold more validity than the information given out by international news organisations who have vested interest in maintaining their own reputation by being as accurate as the can with the news they report,

Unlike individuals hoping to sell lots of books or publish their own personal views and opinions on the internet…

No, I pay taxes and national insurance (you do realise why national insurance is paid?), but how can you think that a birth right is ok in 2013. What would you do at work if your boss discriminated against you in this way, would you not prefer to work in a meritocracy, where every one is judged on their ability rather than who their parents are?

Why not let a baby born on this day be third in line to the throne and all the benefits that will give them. Is that not a good idea?

I for one am proud to be a royalist and have brought my children up the same. We go to changing of the guards, we always send cards etc on birthdays to the queen.. and my daughter on hearing the news this morning is going to use her free art time at school today to make the royal baby a card.

They do far more good for this country than many that get paid far more.. and with far more restrictions.

you only have to look at how many people attended for the recent celebrations to realise that it's a big part of our country and something to be proud of...

The tea parties across the land.. the celebrations that joined community's. How can that ever be a bad thing. The queen is such an amazing stateswoman... She has stood the test of time.. seen so much change yet even now manages to amuse with little jokes.. she still works more than many of us will In our sixties...

She is a devoted mother to her family but her country comes first.

"There are stats that prove they are an asset to the country, and others that prove they aren't..take your choice.

What is amazing though that in a modern, supposedly, meritocratic society many feel the need to bow, genuflect, and consider ourselves 'subjects' to the head of a family who have no claim to this idolatry other than they were born in to it. Oh well, if they like it..

"

Funny that, so how do you treat your boss at work? Or a Policeman who stops your car? or a doctor treating an illness? there are times in life when we all have a "superior"

So tell me when did you personally have to bow or genuflect to the queen? like the situations above only people who want something she can give have to do that.

As for a dodgy family history, well we probably all have them if the truth were known, just ours has not been publicly documented.

Long live the Queen, royalist through and through here.

Remember elected heads of state cost considerably more and yield such gems as George W Bush

That made me laugh

Why is it that the bbc, skynews etc, all report on the same stories yet come away with different views?

Why is international news different to ours?

Why did Edward snowden go to the guardian and not the sun newspaper, even though the sun has far more readers?

"

Who said it was hearsay and gossip?

These are facts

Not the crap that's fed to you through the mainstream media

as opposed to 'your sources'..

oh, the irony..

haha yeah is so funny

I subscribe to the message given in that now famous qoute attributed to Abraham Lincoln where he said “ don’t believe everything you read on the Internet”

So everything on the Internet and in books is fake?

You think I read one bit of info and then assume its the gospel?

I said to you to do some research.

Read, read and then read some more.

Do you even know how the current royals came to be to the royal family of GB?

About their dealings with other family's?

Maybe you're too busy reading the sun newspaper and watching the bbc"

No I don't read the Sun....

Yes I am familiar with the historical lineage of the present royal family

As for suggesting I should read read and read some more..... I did ask you to reference your direct source but for some reason you chose to ignore my request….

As it happens I’m not an completely unread person myself and don’t assume that other people aren’t either just because they dont share my views or opinions..

So yeah I’m still gonna smile away at the attempt to punctuate an argument by suggesting random books and internet sourced information holds more validity than the information given out by international news organisations who have vested interest in maintaining their own reputation by being as accurate as the can with the news they report,

Unlike individuals hoping to sell lots of books or publish their own personal views and opinions on the internet

It always bemuses me that some people insist on trying to tell other people what to do or what to think during these discussions rather than display an open willingness to challenge opinion with observations or questions in a way which doesn’t resort to making things personal.

My opinion is that any benefit that the royal family bring to this country would still be achieved without their presence.

Well...

I support the Monarchy 100%. If and when the Monarchy becomes something that is against the people, then I will change tune.

However, for the title of the thread, it is blatantly untrue. Our Monarchy has brought in untold millions, or possibly billions, to the UK treasury.

So yes, I'm proud to have a monarchy that's soo rich in history.

I do have figures, and I'm usually tried of repeating myself over and over... because people like yourself ignore it or couldn't care less. That is why I asked you to look.

Anyway, I'll say one little thing; The Queen has stated before that the Palace is in essential needs of repair but held it off for quite a while due to the economic circumstances. That repair bill was over £15m (last I remember). Obviously the house of lords upgrades loo's for £100k and now the houses of parliament that likely be in excess of £1 billion.

The Monarchy gets over £30m thereabouts, up and down figure. However, the Monarch's estates income (which goes to the Treasury) brings annually, £200+ million.

I know its not a big deal, but Prince Charles may not have to pay tax but he elects too, which adds up to around £4m year... more than Amazon, Starbucks and other tax dodging companies over the years.

Yes I probably would find it sycophantic if I thought their motive was simply to court my favour regardless of how I felt about myself being worthy of the attention or not…

However if I felt the sentiment of their action and behaviour was done with a courteous grace and with no underlying agenda, I'd be humbled by it and I certainly wouldn't think negatively about them, although I’d probably attempt to persuade them that although their attention was flattering they ought to save it for someone who truly deserves it, rather than lavish it on me..

Remember elected heads of state cost considerably more and yield such gems as George W Bush "

Must have missed something, but I'm sure you'll correct me. but I have never regarded myself as a 'subject' of my boss, Doctor, or a policeman, incidentally all who have had to work hard to obtain their positions. Correct again if I'm wrong, but I'm sure my Boss, Doctor, and Local bobby didn't inherit their titles.

'Superior' why are royals superior?..why on earth would I regard Kate Windsor superior to me or anyone

"Why Bill Gates? He is a self made man. His wealth was not given to him just because he was spat out of a Royal womb! "

Bill Gates is a self made man, and there are dozens of companies who contest that he took their ideas and marketed them so successfully that they are now bankrupt, whilst the Microsoft empire grows richer and stronger.

Should we throw away all Microsoft product and progress when he dies and re-invent the PC and all that followed? or should we accept that his children will inherit the company and then pass it onto their children, will we in a few hundred years the descendants Bill Gates hand over their company and money to the descendants of Gary Kildall?

The true difference between aristocracy and avarice is aristocracy works over generations for the good of the family, the other just wants to take it now for themselves with no regard for the past or the future.

"

actually I have meet her a few times.. I have also had a few notes back for cards and things I have sent

what did she say 'thank you for being ones biggest sycophant'

Are you able to comment without name calling other people who have differing opinions to yours?

yes, look up the definition of the word. if you take offence with it then thats your problem.

Can I just ask a non loaded question here which is only intended to gauge opinion….!.

Would you agree the word sycophant is a none complimentary term applied attempting cast a negative view of a persons attitude or behaviour..

Therefore is it a thinly disguised insult? or not?

It was what I expressed as a view that would come from the monarch to someone who obeyed her without question.

you will notice it was in quotations as to what would be written on a card to one of her subjects

But do you think the Queen would use it it like that?

she might not say it but would might think it. i know i would think some one was being sycophantic to me if they sent me cards and told me how great i was even when i know i'm not. would you not find that sycophantic?

Yes I probably would find it sycophantic if I thought their motive was simply to court my favour regardless of how I felt about myself being worthy of the attention or not…

However if I felt the sentiment of their action and behaviour was done with a courteous grace and with no underlying agenda, I'd be humbled by it and I certainly wouldn't think negatively about them, although I’d probably attempt to persuade them that although their attention was flattering they ought to save it for someone who truly deserves it, rather than lavish it on me..

as much as we would like to think no action is truly altruistic.

For reasons I'll not go into on here, I can't agree with that statement!

my view is that to be truly altruistic you cannot benefit but every action that benefits others does benefit yourself even if it is in the tiniest way

"Must have missed something, but I'm sure you'll correct me. but I have never regarded myself as a 'subject' of my boss, Doctor, or a policeman, incidentally all who have had to work hard to obtain their positions. Correct again if I'm wrong, but I'm sure my Boss, Doctor, and Local bobby didn't inherit their titles.

'Superior' why are royals superior?..why on earth would I regard Kate Windsor superior to me or anyone"

Yup you missed my point probably due to me not making it well.

Forgot to mention that due to a throwback to the elk'ish origins of the family it had a fine pair of antlers

The only way I can agree with that is by saying perhaps if you count developing an awareness of seeing the world through the eyes of others is a benifit... then yes I'd agree

Ive classed the royals as celebs, I barely have time for them..however at least most of them have worked through something to become where they are in life.

I honestly cant see what makes anyone special for essentially behaving really well and doing paperwork, going all around the world visiting new people etc etc..tough job

I'd like to be a royal..just to see how hard it is..are there any trainee positions?
