Just read on my Facebook someone has posted an Interesting Fact:
The biggest Speeding Fine ever given is $1,000,000 (Million doh!) to a guy who was doing 185MPH in Switzerland.
The penalties are based on the speed and multiples of your Salary.
So just for giggles assuming you were earning $500 per year your fine would be on average something like $1,500-$2,500 per offence.
Seem fair?
I think that would sort out our roads for sure.
Especially for the younger generation who are driving (18-25), the thought of them losing their salaries for the next couple of months should be a deterrant.
For those in the upper Income Tax brackets...ouch!
Obviously all this is contingent on the speed your doing, but the concept is good in my opinion. |

I have a better question.
Why, on an island 700 miles long, with a maximum speed limit on motorways of 70mph would anyone require a car to do more than, say 85 to 90mph at the most?
Why would anyone need a 3.5 litre Mashinaka death machine that can accelerate from 0 to 60 in less time than it takes to inhale?
Stop making and selling cars that are excessive in terms of top speed and off-the mark acceleration. |

"they make exceedingly good rolls ..sorry couldn't resist"
And triangular chocolate!!
Re the fines - would never work - for the reasons given! The jobless would have nothing to pay and the rich wouldn't give a toss!!
I would argue that the current 70mph limit on motorways is too low and unrealistic - given that it was created in an age of no safety features in cars and is widely ignored by most!
Higher motorway limits in many European countries do not result in higher accident/death rates.
Also - compulsory practice on motorways for new drivers should be mandatory as currently none have experience prior to passing their tests - absolute lunacy !! |

"If speeders had their car confiscated and crushed, it might make them think twice…. "
thing is though speeding itself isnt dangerous its the circumstances of the traffic on the road, time of day, weather etc
i can be off early on a summers morning at 6am with good visibility on the motorway and its 70mph limit or on a winters morning where its torrential rain, pitch black and busy traffic and its still 70mph
however outside a school at certain times i dont care if they make the limit 1mph |

In order to increase the speed limit, first you need better roads!
The stretch of M5 from Dorset to Bristol is getting like a lunar landscape. Its dangerous doing 70 on some stretches of that road....
Besides, its 700 miles from Tip to Toe in this country, would we really need more than 70mph? |

Thats ridiculous, if someone works hard why should they be governed as to what they can spend there money on.
just because a car will do 0-60 in 2.5 seconds or 200mph it doesnt mean you have to do it
My motorbike will do stupid performance figures and if i want to take it to silly speeds i go on a track day not the road |

Well, if someone told me I was gonna lose multiples of my salary that would be a deterrant enough.
I don't race around anyway, but for me, I think spending money is pretty important to folk.

not far from iceland,,,,,, tescos is nearer though :-) (near leeds) |
"Stop making and selling cars that are excessive in terms of top speed and off-the mark acceleration."
Its inappropriate speed that is the real danger, a car travelling at 30 in the wrong location or conditions is a potential killer,,,, I thought new drivers have morr of a punishment than just fines and points, don t they have to resit tests if convicted in the first two years,,? |

I’m curious to know why would you accelerate towards a situation that cause you concern.....
Surely the safe thing to do is to drop back to a safe braking distance until you’re sure its safe to make a pass manoeuvre?

This was tried under Mrs Thatcher's government.
The criminals got worried that their signing on, criminal activities and hidden assets would be found, so there was a big moan and it didn't happen in the end.
Also something about different people being punished differently, (though in proportion), which is contrary to British justice.
Anyway, fine people the proper rate, and if they can't pay, give them the equivalent of a student loan, to pay back some point in the future... |

if you want to drive in gross excess of the speed limit then pay up and go to a track..
ACPO said several yrs ago that in most cases their officers wont prosecute on the motorway network for folk doing 80 mph, clearly the conditions at the time will dictate that..
we are not harsh enough with those who put other people's lives at risk by 'driving' like complete muppets on all our classes of road..

Actually im starting to love autocorrect!
Reason per se:
I can legitimately fuck up and blame it on the autocorrect, thus making me look less of an asshole.

the M5 from J30 Exeter to J15 Bristol Gordano is actually one of the better roads in the country.
The solution to speeding is simple, put speed limiters on all cars, same as we do to trucks, job done.
With *VERY* little effort we could integrate GPS / mapping data into a dynamic speed limited that restricted you to 70 on a motorway and 30 in a 30 zone.
However, as other have said, it is not speed that is the issue, but inappropriate speed.
The biggest inappropriate speed factors are;
1/ weather conditions
2/ driving on as fast as you can see
3/ a 2 second gap to the vehicle in front |

The only thing is with GPS is it can be got round. We used to have them on land rovers and if you wanted to go to the shop you used to tape a couple of foil crisp packets over the little antenna and it would block out the signal so no one knew you had left and take it back off when you came back. |

It's all down to driver training and making drivers think for themselves.
Roads go 20 limit, 30 limit 40 limit 50 limit and any permutation you can think of.
At one time you could look at a piece of road and guess the limit - and usually get it right. Not any more, it's quite arbitrary.
You can be on a 50 limit main road, exit onto a narrow country lane and it's 60!
Sensible limits and training to make drivers aware that it is a max, they have to decide if conditions make it sensible to do less than the posted limit.

" not in all cases the situation can happen and any time and ie last night driving home doing a steady 50, a car went to pull out of a juction in front of me, now had I not been so close to the juction I could have slowed down and stopped as it was I was only about 20 metres away maybe a little less so the best thing to do was drop a gear and accelerate and go round him and make sure I got round before the on coming cars prevented me doing so, I know for certain had a i not done that then i would have crashed into the car |

They do a pass plus which does this but it's not compulsory. I don't mine a week after passing my test. But only done it because I was going to save £1500 on my insurance |

It cost me £100 10 year ago to do it and spent a Sunday driving about and had to do 8 hours driving as far as I can remember and spent about 2 hours of that on motorways. Obviously experience is only gained over time but as I had never been on a motorway before doing this it did help a lot |

When I done mine they said that you can't fail your pass plus but if they think you need extra time then they will give you it before you get a certificate of completion. So you do need to be upto a set standard to get it. The instructor told me that he marks people on wether he would be happy to let his kids go in the car on a long journey with the driver |

Restricting speed is not the answer, small motorbikes are restricted to 28mph and 60mph in theory, problem is once under load and heading up hill 28mph becomes a hazardous 10mph. As for pulling out of a junction onto a busy road yes please give me acceleration!
Also it's FUN! acceleration on a clear open road is exhilarating and fairly safe. Few things in life that are fun are totally safe we just have to be sensible in deciding when the risk is acceptable / minimised. |
