Hi all just a question on how my fella can lose some weight he's been wanting to do it for a while but keeps stumbling on what foods to avoid and it's knocked his confidence so that's why we're having a break from swinging so any tips or suggestions will be gratefully received (miss d) so we can get back into the swing of things

Obviously best thing is to use btoh exercise and good food. Keep away from fatty foods and limit carbs.... bread pasta rice potatoes etc.

DO NOT cut out all the things you like, he will only then binge (I should know me and weight fight like cat and dog).

Also watch the things you think are okay, like bananas, they are full of sugar so no more than 2 a day!!

Avoid energy drinks and try diet juices etc.

Exercise doesn't have to be much, a bit of a walk every day, a jog, maybe join a gym but I hate them so I never have. Swimming is great and the best exercise is SEX!!!!!!

Above all, just try and find the good things in yourself and stop looking out for the bad, I bet being a bit overweight is nothing in comparison to the other amazing things he has going, so get him to keep confient with them so as not to fall really low about it. Feeling confident in his own skin will eventually happen.

Weightwatchers/slimming world etc all do things online now too so that ight be worth a look.

Forget fad diets etc, simple answer in a calorie deficit approach, whatever calories you eat, burn some off which can to done through basic exercise (walking) or something more strenuous. Calorie counting is key.

"Limit carbs in the form of white bread, pasta for a start."

Disagree, everything in moderation and to the OP I don't believe in fad diets or diets full stop.

Eat healthy, cooking yourself will ensure that and everything in moderation, exercise of course but don't need to be a gym bunny!

I mentioned on a diet thread earlier, weight loss is pretty much a matter of calories in vs calories out - basically, eat less calories than you're burning off then you'll lose weight.

Its much easier to do this by simply eating less though - 30 minutes of jogging will take you over around four miles burning up about 400 calories in the process, there are 3500 calories in a pound of fat and 14 pounds of fat in a stone - so we're talking ALOT of jogging.

But fat doesn't make you fat. Unused blood glucose does as the insulin generated stores unused glucose as fat.

Cut down on carbohydrates. Not cut them out completely (although I haven't had any bread pasta or rice or potatoes for months now). I have lost 7lb so far but my main aim was reducing my blood glucose levels.

Portion size is my next challenge!! My plates are far too big so will buy some smaller ones soon.

I have also started becoming more active (and enjoying it which is odd for me )

Buy him a bike!

Seriously, to keep going with exercise you need to enjoy it. I found this with my bikes, a hobby (some would say obsession) that keeps me healthy rather than a regime to be endured. Cycling is good execise whilst being low impact on joints etc. You could always do it together.

Also, cut out the booze. Beer is full of empty calories and really piles the weight on.

Main thing though is to change your view of exercise from something you use to attain a goal (weight loss) to being something you actively want to do.

Good luck xx

I've tried diets in the past but it never lasted long. I joined slimming world 16 weeks ago I can eat any meats as long as there's no fat on it eat loads of fruit and veg and in moderation pastas and potatoes. So far I've lost 1st 7 1/2lbs and I'm not bored of eating the same things everything is different. I even have a bar of chocolate (as one of my counted syns) and eat out regularly.

Cut out cane sugar. It has no nutritional benefit and is a massive energy releaseand plays havoc with your energy levels and hunger.

Switch to fruit sugar or sweetner.. After a while food tastes so much better, u can taste the natural sweetness of other foods better

Eat as much veg as u like.. Fill your plates up with it! Its all good slow release energy. Altho limit fruit to 3 a day as it has a lot of natural sugars.

Try and eat the same time everyday and you will only be hungry at meal times then.

Eat in porportion.. U need a daily intake of fat and carbs and protien, u just don't need it in great quantities.. Also try and eat ur main meal at a time of the day your most active.. So don't come home from work then eat your bulk of calories just to sit on the sofa before bed.

It takes time to get going and get into a good routine.

Remember hunger means that's your body saying "I need energy or I'm going to have to start burning fat" well yay cos that's what u want so hunger isn't a bad thing and if u eat slow release energies then hunger isn't as great.

Drink plenty, I drink diet as it satisfys my sweet tooth.

Its all about a change of lifestyle, your overweight cos your lifestyle now isn't good enough. So walk more, park further away, use stairs not a lift.

Good luck x

I've cut out most of my carbs and now eat proper meals instead of snacking on crisps, toast and sandwiches.

I've also started cycling to work as well as at around the area i live in.

It's a balance of intake and burn...

Fantastic reward, I (Mr) joined weight watchers 4 years ago and lost 5 stone, and it stayed off.

And the high level of men at my meetingiis encouraging and a little competitive, which really motivates.

I have to start the day right so I have a protein shake but mix it with oats so it keeps me full up

I then stick with all the ideas already posted but the minute I'm hungry, I down another shake and it stops me. They are only 100 kcals a shot but they fill me up!

Good luck

The best advice on here so far is exercise... and do it in a way that is fun!

You dont have to go jogging, or pumping iron in the gym, find something that you actually like doing, and the weight will steadily drop off.

Lots of sensible advice on diet too, I'm about to give my whole lifestyle a makeover, as I am my own worst enemy when it comes to diet, so smaller plates, lots of veggies (luckily I love veg!) and cutting out the sugary drinks and other crap.

I want to drop about 2 stone, maybe three, so its less time couch-surfing, and more time dangling of a rock face or powering through white-water for me!

get your normal meal cut everything in half then scrape half on one plate and put that away then before you eat your half portion drink a point of water then have your meal then another class of water after it ! The water will not stay with you but will trick your mind to tell you your full and you've halved your food intake

As an ex van driver.

Make sure you put lots of fruit and healthy nibbles in his bag.

Stops him from pulling in at the greasy spoon and eating all those delicious bad for you foods.

That's the only way to do it, but sadly many people don't want to listen, they just want to make excuses!

Lots of good advice on this thread.

My advice would be to eat more food fibre. Cut out the processed foods, eat more fruit and veg, drink lots of water and exercise at least 30mins a day. Doesn't have to be too strenuous but something which gets your heart pumping and makes you sweat a little.

White/refined sugar? Excessive alcohol? Takeaway meals? Smoking?

Try to minimize your intake as much as you can.

Get a recipe book and prepare meals from scratch. There are meals which take as little as 15 mins to make so it time constraints shouldn't be an issue.

Oats, nuts and multi-seed wholegrain bread are good ways to keep the hunger away for longer, thus taking away your need to constantly snack on the bad stuff.

Remember to treat yourself now and again as cutting something off completely from your lifestyle is not a good idea.

Stay motivated, focused, determined and you'll reach whatever goal you're attempting to achieve.

"Less food, more movement. Simples."

Doesn't come any simpler than that advice. Eat less exercise more and have some discipline.

Carbs are fine if they are complex carbs like wholewheat pasta, it's the white refined stuff you should limit.

Lot's of advice on here, some good points and some not so good.

The first thing your hubby needs to do is 100% commit to changing his lifestyle. There are no quick fixes, and changing your habits takes strong will power but once on the right track it all becomes very easy and enjoyable.

I am happy to get you started and give you some advice. If you want my help drop me a message I will glady put together a realistic diet and exercise plan together to get him ripped for summer.

Its easier if you dont stock your fridge with foods which arent good .

If you both eat sensible together and dont have bad foods in the house it way easier . Being supportive is a massive help.

As has been mentioned Slimming World is the answer after a lifetime of dieting. I have never eaten as much as I do now and yet have lost 7.5 stone and hubby 6.5.

Never feel hungry, nothing denied to you and no measuring. It shouldn't work, but the proof is plain to see x
