Self Service Checkouts…

‘Unexpected item in bagging area’
‘Please wait for assistance…’
I also really love the reflexes test at the end when they ask you if you want a receipt and you have to whack on the screen faster than Bruce Lee… |

"Never had an issue with them, work just fine.
A lot of the anger towards them reminds me of the luddites
Bad analogy. The printing press worked. "
Self service checkouts work, and the frequency of failure probably aligns with the printing press.
People don't like change. Ever. Especially older people. |

"I love them.
I never get asked for age verification by humans these days.
Bastards........
The machines make me feel young again. 😁"
😂😂 I have determined a pattern: the longer the pause between the machine telling you that age verification is required and a member of staff (who gives you the once over to determine if you are indeed of legal entitlement) clearing it, the younger one obviously looks.
I managed a full three minutes recently and left the store feeling on top of the world 👍🏻 |

Aldi have them too. And whilst I agree with the 'packing shelf' concept completely to save time at the checkouts, the fact that so many people still stand there and do it at the checkout encourages me to self serve.
It's not all about profits. It's quicker and easier for small shopping trips to DIY. |

People like people, so go meet people. The supermarket isn't a social club.
Imo, if people can be removed from doing tasks like working at the checkout, and instead pursue a more valuable career, society wins.
There just needs to be fairer wealth distribution throughout society. |

"Never use them, always go to a till with a person operating it "
Even if all you're buying is a pint of milk or loaf of bread? 🤔
I'm not queuing behind trolleys loaded with the weeks shopping for that. 😮😮😂😂 |

I know what you mean. The people who have the most problem with them are middle aged men and technophobes who are all middle aged men.

"Never use them, always go to a till with a person operating it
You still go to the garage with a pump attendant and pay cash Huggy"
No I put the fuel on my vehicle and then go to the till and pay the person operating the till, pretty much the same as putting groceries in a trolley and going to the attendant at the checkout.
The garage I use for fuel did used to have a guy in a little shed who would fill up the car and put it down on your account, then at the end of the month you’d get the bill but they no longer do that, you can still have an account, but you have to operate the pump yourself. |

Great way to get a discount on your shopping.
"Would you like to use the self service Sir?"
"I don't work here.........."
My local Tesco introduced them to cut down queues, it worked. Everyone goes to Morrisons now. |

Exactly, I don't know why people seemingly yearn for spending 8-9 hours a day under florescent lights scanning shit for people they don't know.
It's like we're programmed to want servitude. Guess for subs that makes sense |

They don't yearn for it but they need to pay rent and eat. |

People do like jobs though and they’re quite important. If we automate everything (and we could apart from, unsurprisingly, entrepreneurship and venture capital investment), who’s going to pay everyone to do nothing? |

The tax payer. Just as we do now |

I don’t mind them, provided they actually work and there’s a human nearby in case something needs approval. They should always still have a few manned tills on though, for people who want or need to use them. Self checkout should never be the only option. |

That's why I said there needs to be a fairer distribution of wealth throughout society.
Now we're living in economic disparity that mirrors Victorian England.
If you talk to enough morons they blame immigrants and the poor |

Maybe then we need to look at the economic model instead of having jobs we don't need. Surely that is insane? |

I like them and if I need a bag occasionally I can take one and click that I brought my own bag, one eagle eyed attendant did spot I had not scanned the bag once and came over and did it, had to play the elderly technophobe card. Not so keen on the ones in the local Asda they show my face on cam sure don't want to see that. |

Typical Saturday morning at my local supermarket is 3 operator manned tills and 3 or 4 staff working the unmanned tills to deal with the little flashing red lights.
Being the Luddite that I am I always use the manned tills and I always pay using cash.
As a point of interest two of the major supermarkets are currently reassessing whether or not to reduce the number of self serv tills. |

"They're OK, things change, otherwise we'd still have lamplighters and town criers. K"
Exactly. Change is good, if it was up to the luddites we'd probably all still be in the fucking mines.
People should want to do jobs, they should want to live. We just need to create a fair society.
Money isn't real, we created it, and we've enslav*d ourselves. |
