NY resolution ... quitting drinking for a year
Jump to: Newest in thread
"Don't make new years resolutions, make lifestyle changes."
This!!
Just make some positive lifestyle changes.
My advice is quit drinking for two weeks, then a month and on.
Set smaller goals rather than huge ones off the bat |

Just swap it for no-alcohol beer etc when you are out -some are low, not zero though, just something to be aware of
I have cans of no-alcohol beer in the fridge and a bottle of no-secco when I have the urge for a drink |

Find something else to drink that isn't unhealthy for other reasons. I drink alcohol but sometimes have to drive on nights out and I really struggle with what to drink and just end up with coca cola which isn't great for you either. |

"I’ve cut back on drinking a lot over the last year. Basically the best way to do it is to become a house hermit. People treat you like a weirdo if you go out and don’t drink."
Not drinking alcohol is very socially acceptable these days much better than it used to be I became a house hermit and wish I never did, I got so depressed!
OP, it all depends on how much alcohol you currently drink and how much you want to cut down or if you want to stop completely
If you drink on a regular basis, speak to a GP first
I'm 6 years teetotal this year and don't miss it at all |

"Any tips on success?
Can we ask what the reason is?
Ie, Health, dependency, just a challenge, don't like it?"
This will go a long way to how difficult it will be to stick to it.
Intent and determination are swayed by them |

Get your family and friends on board to help. If they’re all in on it and supporting you in your goal it will be easier.
Good luck. I’ve never d*unk alcohol and it used to be awful going out. Now there seems to be quite a few non drinkers so it makes things easier. |

I recently addressed my relationship with alcohol. I wanted a more healthy relationship. I gave up drinking completely. I needed a clean break so as if I choose to have a drink I will rather than just drinking out of habit.
Firstly don’t have alcohol in the house.
I also found drinking soda water when I fancied a drink was very helpful. Admittedly I drank gallons of it in the first week 😂
Also a nice cup of tea in the evening is good.
Good luck, it ain’t easy but definitely worth it. X |

Just a challenge I compete a lot in Hyrox so want to rule out anything that doesn't add to my fitness |

Oh so in honesty I think you'll find it pretty easy to just swap for a no-alcohol beer/cider
Wine is harder to swap, but there are some nice botanicals available now as an alternative |

It is more acceptable but for some reason people think it’s ok to say “one won’t hurt” when it comes to drinking or dieting. They wouldn’t do that to an ex smoker or addict but it seems to be fine to do it to people who just want to live a healthier lifestyle. |

I’ve found prescription painkillers have helped as I can’t drink whilst taking them. I’ve switched to non-alcoholic versions when I’ve felt the need for a drink & it seems to be working. I’ve also noticed a bit of weight loss. Find something to keep your kind occupied & avoid situations where you’d be expected to drink.

Take medical advice. Depending on how much you drink it may be harmful to just stop it....Book a GP appointment and plan it.
I don't drink, was married to an alcoholic who's Dad was also an alcoholic. I believe alcohol to be more dangerous as any class A drug because the danger hides in plain sight under the guise of social acceptance |

Yeah don’t.
I’d say try and not drink as much or to excess, but don’t make it a challenge to completely stop as you’ll fail at some point.
I don’t usually drink and been that way a long time. I don’t drink alcohol alone in house. One of my few ‘rules’ but I do drink with company and did that a couple of times recently and enjoyed it |

I tend to disagree. I've never tasted alcohol in my life. Every single one of my friends and colleagues were drinkers but I chose not to and it had nothing to do with health.
Only once when I was 18 or 19, so more than 40 years ago, did someone comment negatively on the fact I didn't drink.
If people around you are making comments like you suggest I would consider who you are hanging out with rather than what you are drinking. |

I'm going to try something similar but I'm just saying to myself that I'm going to drink less instead of every night maybe once a week then just phase it out, I'm hoping I will lose weight and get fitter too . I think it's now or never |

My friends are fine, thanks but in my experience it’s not just from friends. It’s colleagues, family members and even strangers when you’re out and about. I online in Newcastle where drinking culture is just a part of life though so maybe that’s why my experience differs from other’s. |

I rarely drink now - I stopped when I split up with the Mrs as I didn’t want to be that guy who drank alone at home. Not having alcohol in the house helped massively and I realised that after not drinking for a week or two I just felt better. I basically ended up drinking other stuff if I went out. I do drink occasionally but I feel it really badly afterwards which helps me not want to do it again. |
