Do you rewatch films ? And if so, why ?
I kind of see films like something to consume, but once consumed and enjoyed (if it was good), then the surprise is lost watching it again. You know the story now. You know the jokes too, if it was a comedy for example.
I just find it excruciatingly difficult to watch a film more than once. Unless, I am sharing with someone else who has never seen it, and then I'm fine.
It's definitely a strange quirk that I cannot pin down ! |

Sometimes a familiar story, well told, can be enjoyed repeatedly. That's why I rewatch favourite films. Sometimes you notice things on a subsequent viewing that you originally missed, too.

Nostalgia, takes me back to my family home I used to live. I'll remwatch a movie from then.
One time a friend and me challenged each other to see who could last longer watching The Sound of Music continously for a whole weekend. By Sunday morning I'd had enough and gave in.
Then there's the Jaws factor some films have great one liners and I never get tired of watching Jaws.
Then there's porn favourites.
Then there's your Carry Ons a gift that keeps giving.
Then there's your Bank Holiday regulars James Bond.
And finally your horrors, Dracula with Bella every Haloween.
Oh and your sing alongs, Sound of bloody Music.
They all draw you back sooner or later.

I very rarely watch a film more than once. A handful I've seen maybe a couple of times or so over the years, especially maybe if its been a long time between viewings. Also if its The Director's Cut or something like that.
I have a pretty good memory so I just don't enjoy seeing the same thing over and over. |

I had quite bad mental health issues from time to time when I was younger and so rewatching films or tv shows that I know well allows me to focus on the dialogue and ignore the other shit, same goes for listening to music I’ll listen to the same albums over and over as I can sort of ground my thoughts on the things I know are real |

Yeah I do for a number of reasons. Great films / cinematography is like great art, literature & music, you don’t get bored of them and they often reveal more over time as you change & mature.also great sci-fi is just entertaining for a couple of watches at least!
If it’s Netflix/Hollywood probably not but I recently re-watched a while bunch including Apocalypse Now, Wadjda, Walkabout, Paris Texas, Leaving Las Vegas, Strictly Balroom, Moulin Rouge, Pi, original Dune, Aliens, Bladerunner new & original |

I used to watch the films I enjoyed, over and over. Same with music too, but not on repeat. If they don't interest me enough to hold my attention, I can't sit through them. I never go to the cinema, I hate it. I think it's my ADHD. |

"Perhaps you just have t found the right film yet?
I could watch the Cohen brothers films over and over and still find something entertaining or even new each time. "
Note to self - rewatch brother where art thou….. |

I never rewatch new films but old childhood films or classics I will go back to enjoy again.
I'm a Quentin Tarantino fan for example so every few years I'll have a marathon.
Tradition to watch things like hocus pocus on Halloween and home alone at Xmas. |

I totally watch some films every year at certain times. Die Hard being a good example (Sunday evening with my first Calvados of the year).
Some movies can help whenever you're feeling anxious. I tend to rewatch TV series I love throughout the year for this reason. Big Bang, Brooklyn 99 and Superstore. Just good comedy. |

What an utterly fascinating and diverse mix of answers to my original question ! Thank you to all who took the time to say why rewatching films mattered to you.
A lot of commonality too around themes of "comfort" and "distraction", showing the therapeutic affect of movies to some. "Familiarity" for others, which I suppose in an uncertain and unpredictable world, solace in the predictability of the known is a major comfort to many. No wrong anwers and all right for those who gave them. Thank you !
.
I did suspect someone might ask, "What about music ? Songs ? Don't you listen to them more than once ?"
.
I absolutely do. But I don't listen to music casually like I used to in the past. Now it's about key, timbre, chord progression, rhythm, elements, construction and incredibly dull things like the Hz of a Bass and if there is enough room in the song or more cutoff is needed at the low end due to conflict with other instruments. |

I find that my movie watching comes from films I knew little about, I had a partner who loved movie watching they took me to watch Highlander, Alien, Aliens, The Hunt for Red October, Robotcop, Rocky 4 I loved her for showing me an art form I new little about at the time and the movie I watch most is Lethal weapon, and leathel weapon 2 but the movie I watch most most well a scene in a movie is Superman The Movie (I believe a man/women can fly) when he takes Lois Lane flying that is what I watch the most. With a John Williams soundtrack to accompany the scene what do they call it movie magic. |

There are only a handful of movies that I have watched more than once but I've never ever rewatched a TV show.
Even if there has been a huge gap between seasons I won't go back and watch previous episodes to catch up.
Once and I'm done. |

Rewatching my favourite films is relaxing. I know what happens, I know how things work out, there's no tension there and I can let it wash over me.
It's the comfort of familiarity in a stressful and unpredictable world for me.
I re-read my favourite novels for the same reason. |

I do, most of the time I've forgotten I've already watched it until half way through, then it's too late and I need to watch to remember what happened or there's just films I love I can watch over again.

I rewatch films often - sometimes it’s just easier than finding something new. It means I can doom scroll fab/social media when I’m not in the mood to concentrate on something I haven’t watched before.

I love sharing movies with people and being introduced to new movies.
Bollywood recently, I've watched K3G twice this year. I watched it with my partner and my mum, it had us all crying.
I'm feeling a Jean de Florette/Manon does sources marathon it's been ages since I've watched them. Maybe Amelie too or even a real oldie like La Strada. |

It depends for me. Sometimes I really need to watch again, to absorb even more of the experience, learn more that I probably missed out on, the first time or just to enjoy it in a different way. If it's a long time afterwards, less will be in my memory, so it's also a refresher |

I used to rewatch certain films endlessly. Less so now days though, however I do enjoy going back and rewatching old films that I know I enjoyed but don't fully remember.
I recently researched Miracle on 34th street and it was such a joy to be transported back.
Then there are comfort films that are just good no matter what, Mad Max Fury road & Batman the dark knight. |

"Yes.
But for lots of reasons. "
Ie. Enjoyed it so much the first time, didn't enjoy it at all and wanted to see why/if I just didn't understand the point, or even maybe just feel like I missed something after it concluded... |

I like to give things a second pass at least.
Watch it once, with all the newness and surprise. Let it settle for a while then watch it again with the new context of knowing what's coming. Spot the foreshadowing that I missed the first time, watch for those little bits that didn't seem relevant enough to acknowledge the first time.
And if it has a good soundtrack, or notable visuals, I'll watch it again to relive those. I don't have a visual memory. I know that I enjoy the visuals of say Suckerpunch, and I like to go back and watch it again sometimes, because while I remember what I felt like seeing it, I can't bring up the imagery in my brain 💜 |

Yes, particularly if I'm ill or when I'm doing something else like working and I can have it on in the background and not have to concentrate. Or if I'm with someone who had a mis-spent youth and hasn't seen a film i really think they need to watch |

Yes I can and do. Why... because I liked the movie.
I've got many movies I've watched so many times I couldn't even count.
Maverick for instance.. I saw over 30 times in thr cinema alone.
Things like ET. Or the marvel movies... hobbit or lord or the rings... love to just snuggle down and watch them.
One of Mr and I's first hotel room dates.. we snuggled up and watched Home alone xx

That’s some rewatching!
When we were kids used to sneak into the local cinema through the fire doors, I must have watched the 2nd half of Rocky4, Commando & White Nights 100 times each! |
