"Nope not really. It’s a bunch of random circumstances that led me to being born here. That’s the only thing that makes me British. Nothing specific to be ‘proud’ of." Same here

"Nope not really. It’s a bunch of random circumstances that led me to being born here. That’s the only thing that makes me British. Nothing specific to be ‘proud’ of." Similar. My recent ancestry isn't entirely British either. I honestly don't feel any really significant national identity. I do feel generically European.

"I'm proud to be Scottish. Despite the current football score." well at least your team give it 100% effort in every game they play,,, not like the 11 headless chickens last thursday against greece

"Could be worse, could be French" Fo sho. I think you need to respect where you're from to a degree because it is part of who you are (like it or not), but I'm not overly patriotic.
"Not bothered anymore the Britain that was is no more ." I try to think link this and I agree to a point but there's still that bit inside that makes me defend the ideal

"Not bothered anymore the Britain that was is no more . I try to think link this and I agree to a point but there's still that bit inside that makes me defend the ideal " What ideal exactly?
"Not really. I don't get this national pride attitude like you made any sort of sacrifice or worked hard to determine where you were born 🤷♂️" Same.

"I'm proud to be Scottish. Despite the current football score. well at least your team give it 100% effort in every game they play,,, not like the 11 headless chickens last thursday against greece" I think the word you meant was "shite", not "effort".

"Britain isn't great anymore it's a multi cultural pile of shite where the division of wealth is as always for a few ,our borders have been breached for money ,you can't say fuck all for offending someone, adverts have become accepted and your watch pays your bill ,what's great about any of that ?I certainly wouldn't go to war to defend it ." Not even if you were threatened directly?

So, mostly the same it's always been but in 2024?

"I think we have become to complacent and comfortable with our freedom. When you look around the world and see how people are trying to steal/take away others countries and nationality I think we should be thankful that we haven't had to fight to save our national identity and country in our Lifetimes. If you are proud or not you should be grateful for what you have. Thing's could have been very different and if mad Vlad gets his way Britain will be obsolete soon." I agree.

I agree but don't see Vlad as a threat. I think Russia can certainly upset the UK with propaganda and interference, but that's about it, and that would only work if people let them.

I didn't realise things like smart watches were uniquely British. Or at all British 🤷🏻♀️
"Nah. I'm also not proud to be Scottish. I find the idea of Patriotism completely ridiculous" It's very odd that on such a small island we can be so tribal and divided even at county level we still try to divide ourselves. Take Cornwall for example.

"I really don't know. I was born in South Africa, left there when I was 29 to travel the world, arrived here in 94 and have been here ever since. I'm proud to have served in the SA army, I'm more than happy to be living in the UK for the last 30 years, but happy? I don't think so. My country of birth has been destroyed by he West, much like every country they insist on forcing democracy on. Leave the world alone ffs, they neither want or need our help, and when they do ask for it, ignore them, it only leads to more chaos." Destroyed by the west in what way? Strange you choose to then settle in the "West"
"Could be worse, could be French" You’re not the first person I've heard say that. Whenever I’ve been to France I’ve enjoyed being there. I’d take the average grenouille over the average rossbiff most days I think.

Afghanistan, Syria, Iraq, Vietnam etc. etc. You really believe the West did any good in those countries?Literally everything is worse since the West decided to get involved. The murder rate in SA is one of the highest in world, more people are killed there every year than during the entire apartheid regime, 1948 to 1994. Last count was around 64 per 100 000. More thsn double that of the US. Corruption in SA runs into 100's of billions every year. The country can't afford the pillaging by the current government, which the West fully endorsed. I left because of a dream I had since I was 14, to travel the world, I figured if I didn't leave when I did, I would never leave. And the only reason I stayed in the UK was because I fell in love. so no, not "strange at all".

"Evening everyone " I'm half British officially/Dual Citizenship. I like both my countries. They've done a lot to make me the person I am and I like who I am. The Politics doesn't bother me as I've studied International Relations so have researched the good, the bad and the ugly for centuries in multiple countries. Sometimes people need a fresh startso move away. Sometimes people have something they have to run away from. Everywhere has something good and bad. So you just have to make the best of wherever you find yourself until you can change it.

"Could be worse, could be French" Lol! I'm an English speaking Francophile. I should have been born French but for now I partake. Was in France in September checking out their nudist and swinger scene... And obviously lots of cheese rosé and champagne.

I'm a Black British Bajan Francophile. I claim it all as part of my identity unapologetically. It feeds my spirit, my joy and my soul. It keeps me from succumbing to neurodivergent depression and Millenial existential angst.
"I used to be but certain recent events have made me change my mind. I’m proud to be a Geordie though " Geordies are just lobotomised Scots.

I was more genuinely looking for specifics on how you believe the west destroyed SA. Do you think any of thr current issues could be resulting at least in part from the repercussions of an apartheid system?" No I don't. the current and previous government have used apartheid to make excuses for their inept governance, especially Jacob Zuma. 30 years have gone by and those clowns continue to screw it up. I'm really not trying to defend apartheid, it was a terrible idea, millions suffered and 1000's died fighting for and against it, but when you have black people begging for the old days of stability, job security, decent education, safety etc. how the hell can anyone justifiably argue against that? Illegal immigration is unchecked, millions of Zimbabweans have flooded the country, along with Nigerians, Ethiopians and whoever else, they are all taking jobs from the locals, which turning into a total fiasco, blacks killing blacks because they aren't South African. The Nigerian gangs run almost the entire drug dealing network, the prostitution network, human smuggling and pretty much every other illegal enterprise going. That would never have happened under the apartheid regime. But yeah OK, the West has done a brilliant job at spreading democracy. gimme a break! The West is so far up it's own ass it can't see shit in it's face. Why do you think the "far right" are making such massive inroads in Europe? they weren't "far right" until recently, but the government refused to see their point of view. so we now have the situation where the so called far right are beginning to call the shots. Maybe if the woke, left leaning imbeciles we currently have running our government, were less woke, they would have seen this shit storm coming and would have done something about fighting them off? Le Penne in France has been around for years, they all laughed her off, now she is suddenly a major contender. How about these morons actually take the time to listen to the majority, rather than the tiny minority groups?

Also, you can have a beautiful country and not be a shithead. I’m interested in how you define ownership of a country, implied by the word “have”. I took it to mean “live in”. But I could be wrong.

"Guess it's hard to distinguish between being British and English. And I think that makes it difficult for those of non English heritage to feel proud of being British. Funny how that list is all english. I hadn’t started my list for the Welsh, Northern Irish and Scotland yet. They deserve their own list As we say in SCOTLAND, Aye, right." Oh fk let me guess... the proclaimers... they're shite too.

"Do I have to display a Union Flag ? Or can I be proud of our … Love of tea. Talking about the weather. Ability to laugh at ourselves. Sarcasm. Love of the underdog. We can queue. Being polite. Great music history. Hammer horror, Ealing Comedy. Alternative Comedy. Rick Mayall. Alan Rickman. The Queen (actually all of the British Queens including Quetin Crisp) Hockney, Constable, Bacon, Freud (all of them) Turner, Banksy. Christopher Wren, Norman Foster. Shakespeare. Darwin. Dickens. Brunel. Viz Comic. Tony Benn. Dr Who. The Spitfire. The Bouncing Bomb. Rolls Royce, Aston Martin, Triumph or Enfield motorcycle/Gun. The Kings Guard. Our Poets, especially John Cooper Clarke. Sarah Lancashire, Gary Oldman, Ray Winstone. Cricket, Football and Rugby (add in rounders, US nicked it and called it Baseball) 1984 and too many authors to mention… Yes plenty also 1967 decriminalisation of homosexuality, suffragettes, Union representation, CO-OP, NHS, Parliament. Funny how that list is all english. " Tea? The milky tea obsession is English, Welsh, Scottish and Irish. I've tried in France and America and had poor versions of a cuppa. From Cornwall to Sheffield to Cardiff to Glasgow and Edinburgh... The only places I've had a cuppa and did think something was off.
"Guess it's hard to distinguish between being British and English. And I think that makes it difficult for those of non English heritage to feel proud of being British. " I'm a history nerdgeek so I know the difference Between British and England. British is the UK. English is England. Britannia was the bit the Romans dominated. The Germanic Angles settled after the Romans left Britannia is the origin of "England" and "English" . The Welsh and the Scots and the Irish have always been seperate as Gaelic and Celtic. If you are not interested in History it all seems the same. France is the same. Provencal is different from being Basque but they are all under a French passport.

Most of that list relates mainly or solely to England and/or English people though. That's kinda the problem for some of the non-English Brits. " Scotland definitely has their own version of everything on that list as well as Ireland. (I say Irish and I dont distinguish between the north and the south) the Welsh I'm not to familiar with but I know they've got a rich history and culture too. Poets, writers, engineers, scientists, inventors, kings, Queens, musicians, artists, top rated medieval Unversities. Castles and great Houses. Haggis, Guinness, rarebit/lamb, Myths and legends. Warriors and Epic battles for freedom. Moutains, Beaches and areas of outstanding Natural Beauty.

"It's not something I give any thought to, personally. I'm just a collection of atoms inhabiting a meat-vehicle that just happens to come from here. But those atoms came from many places before that, if one delves back genealogically. I'm not proud of them no more than I am proud of here. I am just here and this moment in space and time. One day I will not be and those atoms will go every which way afterwards. . The concept of "you must be this because of x" seems utterly bizarre and erroneous to me." "If I was one of these people that could trace back my ancestry a thousand years to these isles, to a specific person that did positive / philanthropic things, possibly I might. Realistically though I would rather take pride in something that I achieved directly myself, rather than accident of birth." They wear it like a medal as well.

"Britain isn't great anymore ." You do know the Great in Great Britain refers to it being the biggest of the British Isles? It's got nothing to do with any sort of fabulousness or wow factor. So unless your concerned that the Island is actually shrinking faster than the other British islands, then it's still Great. "it's a multi cultural pile of shite ." When WASN'T it multi cultural? There's been people from most of the world coming and staying in the UK for centuries, millennia even. "you can't say fuck all for offending someone." This line (not in your case, I'm sure!) is often used by people that are actually saying offensive things, so no wonder people get offended. Everyone is entitled to an opinion but they don't always need to share it. Keep Fabbing!! Gbat

"Sorry, I should add, not particularly proud of being British. I've got dual nationality and rely on my Irish passport, I live in Spain and work in mainland Europe. Britain or more specifically the UK has a lot of good things going for it, but it doesn't "stand out" like a lot of people seem to think. But at least you can taste the sovereignty these days. Gbat " Ahhh.... a deserter to the great british empire of uk and southern island, mighty wales and sexual scotland.
"Evening everyone " Not any more sadly. I used to be. Very much. But no. The last 20 years has seen a very sade demise. I hope it will be turned around but see very little evidence that they will.
"Ahhh.... a deserter to the great british empire of uk and southern island, mighty wales and sexual scotland." Shouldn't that be from rather than to? I think of it more as being able to cut the apron strings and go out into the wider world and what it has to offer. I'm still British, still go there and still pay taxes there. Island? Ireland?
