Another idiot to make air travel that much harder for the rest of us.
For each instance like this, it just gives the authorities a reason to introduce even more draconian measures against everyone. |

"Shit happens sometimes, another disgruntled individual doesnt really bother me....
It would bother you if you were on the plane and feared for your life" My daughter travels around the world on business. This year alone she's been to Bangladesh, Russia, Singapore, Ghana, Nigeria, Cameroon, Turkey and Cyprus. Every time she sets off I worry, so stories like this do concern me. ;-( |

This type of news often raises hackles about personal security, hence my quote regarding the security industry rubbing its hands at this type of news....99% of these incidents are stopped at the planning stage, our security in this country is second to none...the fact that the odd event has Nearly happened and gets a headline is really nothing to be concerned about... |

Oh well, I'm sure the families of Lockerby and othe similar air disasters will take comfort from your kind words.
For some reason I still see the words 'prize idiot' appear before my very eyes. Maybe I need new specs or something |

Lockerbie was 21 years ago...you might need specs to see things have changed a tad since then...but who am i to judge... |

the person involved has no clue or does not care that rather than garner sympathy for the injustices in certain parts of the world, they merely encourage more hate and intolerance and make it possible for tyrants to stay in power with fear-mongering |

Your point being ? Is it different if you get killed in a terrorist attack on an aircraft 21 years down the road ? Sorry but I just don't see what you are getting at, maybe I do need specs, but I think to those involved it will still be as fresh today as it was 21years ago |

I'm sure you do think like that...Just as im sure you'll want to have the last word in any discussion on any subject...but i dont think completely hogging a thread with our meanderings is doing anything for anyone... |

My greatest fear is flying.
I'll have nightmares for weeks before I fly. I've been known to demand to get off a plane when it's mid-flight, I've upset the other passengers, crew and have probably pissed off a few pilots.
I've done the courses and had one to one tuition from pilots.....
It doesn't make one iota of difference. It scares me shitless.......
I don't care about draconian measures that are put into place by the authorities, if it keeps passengers and crew safe. Believe me, if I'd have been on that flight, I'd have been the first one screaming......
I fly because I would never see the world otherwise.
Shit may happen.....but I think we would all wish it didn't.

I'm with Martin on this.
Lockerbie, has been mentioned, and of course there is 9/11, but think about it rationally, how many people have died in car crashes around the wrorld in that time. I work near heathrow, I see 100's of plane landing daily and they are just a fraction of all the flights around the world. Statistically, the amount of succesful terrorist attacks on planes, doesn't even come close to being 1 percent, infact mathamatically, it is virtually insignificant.
Don't get me wrong, it must have been terrorfying for those on board and I have nothing but sympathy for those that have been killed in the past, but I certainly wouldn;t worry about it. I don't worry about catching the tube since 7/7 either. You cannot out think fate. And i am not going to worry about something that may or almost certainly won't happen. If you think like that, ultimately you'd never leave the house. Everything we do in life has a certain level of risk.
I realise you might not all agree with this view, but calling me a prize idiot, like you have Martin, doesn;t really strengthen your argument... |

There are numerous levels of security one has to pass through prior to reaching the comfort of an aircraft, I think we can take comfort that each one of those levels will be investigated with a forensic tooth comb to a) find out how security was breached, and b) prevent a similar situation happening again.

Can't worry too much, or the buggers would think they have won!
When my time is up, it's up, and there is nothing I can do about it.
So I may as well enjoy life as much as I can now! |

Call me a cynic but doesn't the govts' of the west need things like this to happen periodically in order to bolster the support against al-Queda et al and thus continue the war against them?
The one thing Britain & America cannot afford is for it's citizens to become complacent - even indifferent - about what is happening out in Afghanistan or Iraq. They *need* terrorists to pose an ongoing real and valid threat to the West. And then a lone would-be bomber gets through a plethora of security intended to prevent the very thing he was trying to do. A man whose own father had notified the Americans that his son had extreme Islamic views, yet the security services decided it did not warrant placing him on the 'no-fly' list.
Like I say, call me a cynic, but.... |
