A ‘Beard’ (slang) - a person who is utilised to conceal their partners true sexual orientation by appearing to be their romantic partner or spouse.

The word for the moment you show a technician or mechanic a problem, the problem vanishes. There isn’t an English equivalent but the German have a word for it - Vorführeffekt, or 'demonstration effect'. It's the way your broken washing machine magically starts working when the repair man turns up or when you finally get a doctors appointment, your child's hacking cough disappears completely the moment you walk into the surgery….
There is a word for when the opposite occurs… "Schaueffekt" - when you attempt to show something to someone which has been so far absolutely faultless, tested in preparation for a big event and then when it’s needed doesn't work. Conference or Meeting Room AV and IT is typical of this. |
