In my job as a drainage engineer I get see everything. I can get back to base covered in all the lovely stuff you'd expect from blocked drains, manholes and chambers.

There are many men and women in fabland that will be in the same boat yet as I dot about town in me tanker I can't help but think we're a little under appreciated and used as an example to kids, that if you don't stick in at school you'll be like him.

Does anyone notice this with their line of work or am I just getting tetchy over bugger all?

Do you have kids?

My kid see's guys driving trucks and think they are legends.

If the trucks do stuff like pump or spray then even better.

I don't think most people look down on hard working folk. Most people are hard working.

I wouldn't think less of yourself for doing a job that probably takes a bit more than people realise.

Poorly worded that .. I don't think people think down on people who work in that industry.

I'm very grateful for drainage engineers keeping the shit flowing. Genuinely. I don't wanna swim in my own effluent at any time. Thanks for your work.

Also my child's ambitions currently include being a blind runner (not the sighted guide) or a swimmer with dwarfism. The Paralympics have so much to answer for

Some people*do* think less of people who do jobs like yours op. That's because they don't understand.

Most of us will need a drain clearance person at some point in our lives many fewer will need a brain surgeon or astrophysicist

People who use your job as a bad example ARE a bad example.

If it wasn't for you guys shit would quite literally hit the fan.

If it's hitting the fan, it's one hell of a sewer burst

Thank you for your work, OP

I may have watched a few drain clearing videos on Tik Tok - only glad that aroma cannot be transmitted through electrical signals!

God no, I appreciate all of the workers that do jobs most people won't. Without hardworking people like you, working in sewage and drainage, we're all up to our necks in shite.

I used to do environmental drilling when I was younger, using tracked rigs. Contamination testing, mostly. Not quite the same sector, but it was bloody messy and smelly at times. Especially drilling in chalk. Still laugh at how caked we used to get, when the water pressure built up and shot out of the augers. It was insane!

I don't think you're getting tetchy over bugger all, OP. Some people are snobs.

I once had a guy ask me what I did in a pub in front of some mutual friends, and when I told him his face visibly fell. He was seriously disappointed by my answer

I heard men aren't keen on Moulin Rouge dancers as romantic partners

I think people do with my job (aviation security) until I talk about some of the different functions within the role.

However, I know I’m saving the skies from acts of terror, one tray at a time

Your job is massively important OP, thanks for being there x

Sounds like a load of shit

Seriously though, OP, I have no practical skills in any area of life and I rely completely on those that do. Much respect to anyone in roles like yours.
