It comes from 1798 when two gentlemen called Boris and Quentin started selling odd screws that they removed from the ships they were working on.
Sadly they both died in freak sailing accidents which still haven’t been explained |

"Why is a really hot flame blue?"
The question should be why is blue flame so hot. Blue flames are blue because of the specific gases burning, e.g. methane on our gas cookers, and these gases produce a lot of heat compared to say, the flame on a candle, which is produced by combusting a small amount of wick soaked with some kind of solid fatty substance (wax, soya etc). This combustion produces less energy than your gas cooker, hence the yellow flame compared to blue and the candle flame is therefore less hot.
This also answers the question about why you can stick your finger in a candle flame and be less likely to burn yourself. |
