Made Toms blood boil" Hey Tom do you not like cyclists as it seems most motorists dont ,if you've seen the state of the areas that have been repaired all at the motorists expense of course because the bicycle doesn't wear the road out like the very heavy cars and lorries but never the less pretty shoddy road surfaces for the poor cyclist to ride on and we ride bikes because many of us are in the low income bracket so can't aspire to a very costly car ,all that road tax mot and insurance plus fuel must cost a fortune to upkeep ,I do use cycle lanes when I know they are there mind. | |||

Like you, I'm insured as a cyclist but I don't really pay road tax cos my car has a small engine and doesn't pollute much

(You'll already know this as a car driver!). "cyclists may exercise their judgement and are not obliged to use them." Rule 72 (which you already know) sets out when and why cyclists should ride in the centre of the lane. X" Most cycle lanes are simply just not safe for high speed cycling either for the cyclists or other pedestrian users either sharing the path or walking near by it. It also doesn't help that many motorist seem to view cycle lanes as free parking and/or loading lanes. The roads don't belong just to motorists, and "no" we don't fund them through your road tax (mostly because road tax hasn't existed for over 50 years). Roads are mostly funded by local councils which we all pay for. | |||

Where I used to live a cycle lane was built between two villages on safety grounds due the bends in the road with a 60mph speed limit. A safety thing. About a year afterwards a cyclist and bus collided and the cyclist died. When cycling I put my personal safety first as I know I'm vulnerable. I pull in to let vehicles pass. Yes the journey takes longer but better to be alive than enforce my rights and be dead." There are other ways of maintaining your safety. "This thread turned fun" Well the venom and reckless hatred aimed at cyclists on this forum on a regular basis is frankly sickening,I've lost three friends in cycling accidents due to poor drivers,my son was nearly killed by a woman who was too busy chatting on her phone,I've been knocked off and had various things thrown at me. I drive many miles every year and when on my bike I cycle consideratly yet many drivers don't think about the consequences of their actions. I'm not saying cyclists are always innocent parties but to survive on the roads on a bike you have to take quite an aggressive riding style in a bid to get seen. Bringing back cycling proficiency tests at school would be a major step towards road safety and understanding of road use. But I'll keep posting deaths as long as these threads keep getting put up. And believe me I can fill up thread after thread with fatalities caused by dangerous drivers. Whereas fatalities caused by cyclists is probably less than two or three a year! Not that makes it right. I've come to realise in middle age that I can't convince anyone else of anything so the best thing I can do is to protect myself. As fun as middle-aged rants are....I try to limit them and conserve my precious perimenopausal energy for.....shagging and sexual exploits. Lol! I went to swimming lessons, driving lessons and road cycling lessons. Lol! A lot of London cyclists do not drive and do not realise that they are in the blind spot of a vehicle. I also avoid roundabouts and complex junctions with no designated appropriately time delayed cycle green light. I cannot rely on other road users for my safety and it's my job to make sure I do not hit pedestrians...even if they step out into the middle of the road.
