Children Strip Searched by the Police

Saw the headline and am curious for further details. Is it say 12-16 year olds in areas with high gang and knife crime? Or is it across the nation and all child age brackets.
Other one said a disproportionate amount of blacks were searched. However, does that also tie in with a higher percentage of black knife and drug crime or not. Statistics and headlines often make highly misleading things. |

The more people you stop and search the more chance you have of catching people with drugs and knives. Ergo if you search more black people you will find more black people carrying knives and drugs. |

Not going to disagree that labelling and focusing on certain groups\ethnicities can impact the behaviour and finding.
Personally I have a bigger issue with knife and gang crime then searches. So I'd like to see the police given powers to search without suspicion in areas where it's prevalent.
Then it's for politicians to tackle the wider society based issues of why particular deprived areas have higher crime rates than others. |

I think the problem is that when police forces have been found to be institutionally racist given them power to search without suspicion will only lead to more non white people being targeted. |

I remember the report last year of a 15 year old girl taken out of an exam and strip searched by Police (without an appropriate adult) in the school medical room for which she had to remove her sanitary pad. Nothing was found and she then had to return to the exam hall. Guess what colour she was ? |

If anybody has been through stop and search trust me you’ll want changes
I have a urostomy bag due to bladder cancer
I’ve had it 6 years. Not long after I flew from Gatwick to Naples
The bottom of the bag was visible and I was stopped by security. They told me they believed I could be concealing an item. When I explained what it was he told me “it looks like a device designed to blow up” and to lift my top to show him.
I refused as I was in the main hall for luggage and explained I had a letter in my bag to explain it. I was told to stand still and not get to it as I could have a device on me. I wa surrounded by security and ushered in to a room.
I demanded to see the head of security who appeared and informed me I’d need a full search, I explained the situation and if I could get my letter it would all be explained. I was denied.
I was then, with security present, and a Doctor asked to remove my top and trousers to reveal what it was very slowly
Needless to say no apology no nothing. I was so distressed, angry. It ruined my holiday for fear on return
Incidentally in Naples they didn’t care and I was not stopped
I complained to Gatwick and to the urostomy association and received no apology just justification that a urostomy bag could be seen as a device.
So until you’re stopped, searched, you’ll never realise what this can do to you |

I read this 3 times. And I still can’t quite find the right words to express how angry this makes me. |

"Reports that a child is strip searched every 18 hours by police and often without an appropriate adult present. This child must be getting pretty fed up with this by now. It's all over the news"
No matter what, this is outrageous. A lot of this came to light a couple of years ago. Please remember that these are CHILDREN. They are often having to go through this without a safe adult and without their parents being told.
There is just so much wrong with this. |

We should repeat the fact that we are talking about children. Someone above questioned what age of children but it's irrelevant. Children should not be treated like this and the evidence is that the vast majority of such searches do not find anything of interest.
The fact that black children are disproportionately strip searched is further evidence of the ingrained racism within British policing. That's not, before anyone starts, saying that all police people are racist. |

‘ Black children are four times more likely to be strip-searched by police officers across England and Wales than their white counterparts, according to the latest nationwide figures disclosed by a watchdog.
The children’s commissioner also found that children under the age of 15 are a bigger proportion of those subjected to intimate searches, official figures from the year to June 2023 showed. Fewer than half of all searches of children in that year (45%) were conducted in the presence of an appropriate adult.
A report released on Monday also found that nearly nine out of every 10 of searches [88%] conducted by England and Wales’s 44 forces were trying to find drugs.
It said that over the five years to June 2023, children as young as eight have been strip-searched every 14 hours by police in England. More than 3,000 intimate procedures were conducted on children between January 2018 and June 2023.
In response to the report, the police made a stark admission and said that “too many strip searches carried out are unnecessary, unsafe and under-reported”.‘ |

It's sad they it's come to a point where we've come to strip searching children (irrespective of ethnicity).
Maybe more could be done to look k to alternative methods or ways to avoid this.
I do think a strip search is the absolute last resort but only in exceptional cases where the risk of not searching outweighs the negative experience of the suspect. And obviously has to be carried out to the guidelines and with appropriate adult present etc.
Also, I do think we need to look into the disproportionate number of black kids being searched and why this is, is it an example of systemic racism or is it a result of a particular area having a higher rate of crime or lack of resources to use a more appropriate method? |

Children are often used to move narcotics from a to b. This is done by older criminals who know that younger children are easier to handle and are dealt with more leniently when caught.
This might go to explain why children are being strip searched, as we all know where they hide the dr*gs and weapons. What’s not highlighted so much is when they are strip searched by rival hands. The police are seen as an easy touch compared to that.
More needs to be done to stop children being exploited by elders who were once exploited when they were children. The cycle of crime needs to be broken, but I don’t think it ever will. There’s far too much “easy” money to be made supplying the nation with its most popular commodity.

Or we could just legalise and regulate drugs. |

It would remove the criminal element from the equation for sure, but would it help with exposure & addiction? Would normalise people h*gh on /crack and anything else in between.
Its almost a catch 22.
Alcohol is legal and, without looking up figures, doesn’t paint a great light always. While a lot of people consume alcohol responsibly, its abuse is very widespread.
Would it be better legal? I don’t know. Would addiction rates rise due to normalisation? Maybe. Would crime be reduced by eliminating drug dealers? In some cases yes, but addicts will always steal to get their fixes.
At least it could be taxed, and the taxed used to support addiction maybe.

Well as angry as it makes people with the anger directed at the police.
I think more focus should be on the criminals who intentionally get minors to carry drug's and weapon's in the first place that forces the police into searching.
Obviously I agree that any searches carried out should be under strict rules and followed every time.
But the wider issue is criminals exploiting children.
I'd love to know the statistics regarding the number of drugs found in relation to searches.
Anyone? |

According to the latest figures I could find, about 30% of stop and searches end in a ‘positive’ outcome, ie. police action is taken against the person searched. In London approximately 60% of positive outcomes result in drugs being found. So by my maths, in London at least, approximately 18% of stop and searches result in drugs being found. The amount and type of drug is not specified. |

"17 year olds involved in crime are fair game surely ?
Just stop at the fact that it's a child, Tom. This should not be happening to them."
And if they were supplying your children or your relatives children would you feel the same |

If 60% of these buggers are carrying drugs then if Tom were the Chief of Police he would order his men to increase searches and catch more of these buggers |
