What is your nerdy passion and hobbies?
Jump to: Newest in thread
I have a nerdy passion for history, most ancient and classical civilizations like the people who lived in the Nike Valley in Egypt or Mesopotamia (modern Iraq) or Carthage etc.
Bit of a nerd when it comes to stuff like and not afraid to admit it. |

"Mythology, particularly Norse and Egyptian.
Etymology: I love learning origins of words and phrases.
Wordplay: I love the ways language can be moulded and shaped for various effects."
Jesus Christ what is it with you D&D nerds? Rubik is into his greek mythology 😂.
Me personally? Probably my family tree, that's about as much I get I to hobbies and such, I try different things but I get bored very quickly, it's why I love doing the family tree stuff as I can pick it up and look, couple of years pass and I find new information.
I've tried tattooing (I have some questionable ones now) ukulele (there was reason) knitting, painting...I'm not allowed to buy anything hobby related now 😂 |

The Blues. Although I love all kinds of the music the blues is my favourite so much so I have explored its history and development and nuances very, very deeply to the point my knowledge is pretty encyclopedic... or very sad... depending on your viewpoint! Haha |

JRR Tolkien's works.
Ancient, classical and medieval history and lifestyle. Myth and legend in general, but particularly Northern European, and Greek.
Hammered Dulcimer, and the music of Dead Can Dance and Lisa Gerrard.
Sci-fi and Marvel superheroes.
There's more, but I'll stop before I get to 2nd Ed AD&D. |

"How long have you got?

Graeco-Roman, particularly Greek, history (mostly social history)
Language, its effects, how to send messages and create pictures with words (this extends beyond just English)
The nature of cognition
... I forget. A lot of stuff. My brain is way too promiscuous and I can't choose just a few things |

Oh dear. I think they're all kind of wankers
The philosophical tradition handed down to us is a result of the oligarchic overthrow of Athenian democracy, which ultimately failed. Oligarchic thought became somewhere between discouraged and criminalised. Socrates was implicated in the overthrow, but fell within the terms of the amnesty - and those who came after him tried to continue the tradition of kaloi kagathoi (the great and the beautiful - think "born to rule").
It's all a bit "I'm just asking questions! Why are you oppressing me?"
It is also interesting how we write, rewrite, and reimagine various texts for our own contemporary purposes. It's now difficult to see Plato and Aristotle outside a theological lens, despite the fact they lived centuries before. |

"Anything to do with Tudor, Plantagenet or Anglo Saxon/Norse history for me.
Who is your fav Plantagenet King? "
I think either Henry II because he was so no nonsense and anti royal trappings to the point of funny. And I love how audacious he was - invade your cousin’s country and get him to pay your army to go home?! Or Edward IV because he seems quite laidback and knew how to have a good time 😂 |

Do you count the Yorks as Plantagenets? They adopted the name to sure up their claim to the throne, but I see them as Plantagenet Lite at best |

Love everything about them.

Going to events about them
Seeing them raced

Define nerdy
I watch star trek, star wars, marvel, lord of the rings and other such programes
I used to collect marvel comics
I can build pcs, sort most problems out with them and I have an extensive book collection.
I like to think I've got my nerd shirt at least |

When I had my toes on the edge of crazy coffee stuff, they said you could get an "acceptable" espresso setup, second hand, for £500 after grinder.

Another history need here, Norman/ Plantagenet eras.
I also enjoy buying books, which I think it's a very different hobby to reading books. I think I'll need a number of years to get through all the books I buy. |
