There was an FGM thread on here last year. It is heartbreaking when you speak to some of the women that have been through this.

It's the on-going health issues, not just the coercion and brutality of the mutilation, that means some are affected forevermore.

Been aware of this criminal (in this country) disgusting and just plain evil practice for some years.

As now illegal in UK girls are often sent 'home' for this disgusting mutilation.

Among other dreadful effects, physical and mental, it removes the enjoyment of sex.

Female circumcision makes it sound OK ish.

FGM Female Genital Mutilation is the correct term.

Sorry, really upset at this.

"Its barbaric, "

And still going on here in secret or the girls are forcibly sent away. For years social services turned a blind eye to it, claiming that they didn't know how to deal with the cultural issues. The only issue that matters is that it is child abuse.

I'm only aware of one prosecution involving this country and that was assisting with a case that was prosecuted in Canada.

Personally, I worry about it for little baby boys too but male circumcision is better regulated and not carried out in quite the same way.

I'm not sure I can post the links to the figures for this country. Projects I have worked with have been trying to get this story out for the last twenty years. Woman's Hour did a whole programme on FGM last year, which is worth listening to if you can find it.

My post above saying the term FGM was more accurate than Female circumcision obviously did not make it clear.

This mutilation is nothing like the removal of a foreskin, no similarity whatsoever.

Boys may have a risk of infection and a painful experience but are generally left full functional. No comparison whatsoever, whole different ball park..

The Tackling FGM Special Initiative Report, Joanne Hemmings, March 2011 pulled together some peer research which has interesting comments on generations and men.

There are mixed responses from men. It's seen as women's business and so not discussed but if asked if they want their daughters harmed in this way they say they don't. Mothers report that it is pressure from grandmothers to follow the tradition that means it continues.

How can u even compare male and female! A lot of males need to have their foreskin removed as its too tight.. Its mainly done under aneasetic and in no way stops their ability to orgasm and its just a piece of skin.

For females they cut the clitorus out! Remove their ability to orgasm! That's the whole idea behind it.. They hold the girls down with no aneasetic and cut it out! Big big big difference

Let's be clear about this. Male circumcision involves the removal of the foreskin which will not then go on to affect sexual pleasure or performance, in adult life, in any way.

Female 'circumsision' or female genital mutilation as it is properly called, involves cutting off the entire clitoris, so that the woman this child becomes one day, will never experience orgasm or true sexual pleasure....

Perhaps one would have to know what a clitoris is AND where to find it to find these facts at all shocking.

The clitoris being removed is only one part to this horrendous crime.....often the labia are removed too, or at least stitched up. Many women die in childbirth after this procedure has been carried out.

Its not carried out in a sterile operating theatre, but often with old and rusty razors and knives by the older women, in a basic room. Anaesthetic would be a luxury. Infection and blood poisoning are huge problems, and some will go on to die from this too.

Any sexual enjoyment will be non existent....but then that's one of the purposes of the whole procedure.

I'm not even getting into the male circumcision debate.....there is no comparison between the two procedures whatsoever.

I saw something about this a few years ago, heard that for the "anaesthetic" they used to rub ashes on the parts to be cut out. How that works is beyond me. Actually, its all beyond me. Next weeks episode carries on the story and judging by the trailer advertised is going to be pretty gruesome.

Essex.

I think that the above poster may be refering to the tribes in Africa that circumcise male youths and the basically wrap the bleeding penis in leaves and send the boy off into the wild for a month to survive. If he doesn't die of infection or starve to death he returns a man. The above poster may have worded his point a little better...

Both are horrific and no one should be forced to go through that, male or female. It's funny how as soon as people say it's my culture other people are scared to interfere. This is why people of all races and cultures should mix so the ghettos can not form. Parents would feel less pressure to conform to culture if they lived in a mixed area. Saying that I don't see how a loving parent could be forced into doing this to their child by friends or family...

Time using a rusty dull blade and no pain relief to cut a few willies off "surgeons" carrying out this procedure, see how they like it.

Give me time I'll come up with a suitable "procedure" for the female "surgeons".

Type III. Opening the wound up again for childbirth? Oh dear God.

Then you read on in the article, Breast Ironing? Just what is the matter with these people? I don't think education is the answer. Something a bit more, er, permanent shall we say.

Who are we to judge??? If Infact you are referring to tribes in Africa then maybe that this is all they know. Dont be under any ilusion that i agree with it because I do believe it's wrong and a lot of education is needed all over the world but these tribes have their beliefs and it will take a long time and a lot of hard work to change that.

I do believe it's very narrow minded to call them "far worse than animals"

I can remember at least 3 documentaries, over the last 4-5 years, which gave a great insight into FGM.

Some of the bits I found most interesting:

It’s women who carry out the procedure on the young girls.

It’s not usual for it to be a family member, such as a Grandmother, who is conducting the procedure.

It is genuinely believed to be in the best interest of the young girl.

Whilst the UK may have laws against FGM taking place on our shores, jumping up and down screaming 'outlaw it' is not the way top bring cultural change in other countries.... you just encourage people to take it further underground.

Education is the only way to bring about the changes required to see an end to FGM. Education cost money. So if you really want FGM to be a thing of the past..... dig deep.

The documentaries reach a small, interested and, to some extent, informed audience. Casualty gives the subject mainstream exposure.

And there is also the practice in China whereby girls used to have their feet bound so that their toes would end up bent right under the foot. The aim was to get it to look like a 'lotus' flower. Often into adulthood they would end up effectively crippled.

And of course there is the practice used in this country for quite some time - corsetting - which displaced internal organs.

The disabling and mutilation of females in different cultures has been going on for a very long time.
