Is chivalry dead?
Jump to: Newest in thread
No being honest , kind and polite is still alive and well and practised by those who hold them as a set of values they live by.
The word chivalrous is less relevant today as it was generally attached to knights and religion ..... and expected of men toward women.
I think it's better these days where it's a trait of any human being ( or should be ) |

Sir Galahad! Mount thy steed, and may the battle fare well! God willing, we shall emerge victorious this day!
But seriously, it will be a truly sad day when common decency and manners become extinct |

If by chivalry you mean polite treatment just because I'm a woman then I'm not bothered whether it's dead or alive. I want someone to open a door for everyone, hold the lift for everyone. Be generous because that's how they are, not just to win brownie points.

There's an old bit of dating advice that you should look to how your date treats the staff, not just how they're treating you.
I look to how people treat everyone, not just those they're trying to impress/ shag. If you won't hold a door for a bloke, you're not charming or polite, you're just manipulative. |

Just be decent to everyone. I don't want or need special "chivalrous" treatment because I'm female.
Chivalry, as Granny said, is specifically a code attributed to knights (male) towards female people. So, in that form, yes it's dead, or it should be. |

Thank you for your responses. An overwhelming "no" for the out dated chivalry then.
Based on the above, the modern day equivalent is charming, thoughtful and polite to ALL. Not JUST based on if your female.

I've always said it and will always stick to my word.... no matter how a person treats you, always treat them with more respect and manors back. It's cost nothing to be polite, you never know they may be having a bad day and you smiling while saying thank you, may just make it a little better. |

Keeping his sword arm free!
When we got married, we were "the wrong way round" about to walk back down the aisle as husband and wife, the registrar said Rubik should be on my right, years ago it would have been his sword arm on his right...he hasn't shut up about wanting a sword for the last 6 years since lol |

Pretty much couldn't put it better myself! Or just be a dick to everyone, whatever floats your boat. But do it because you want to and not because of a person's gender. |

I mean, hyperbole aside you're on about chivalry which is essentially the way a woman is meant to be treated by a man |

Sorry dude. Wrong emoji... it was supposed to be
For the sarcasm.
Fully on board with treat each as you find them. I think I put that across on most threads like this.
I wanted to know in the modern world if its still sought after. Or if its died.
I think it's safe to say it's died. And that it now more social to just be a decent human regardless of whose infront or behind you |

Yes. Be a decent human to other humans.
It was the very reason for the post. Is chivalry dead, because equality has changed so vastly.
I'm not writing this again. |

See, this is the sort of thing that would annoy me. I am capable of getting out of a car. Yes, I need wheels to actually depart from the car, but I can open the door.
Mr KC would not dream of opening my car door for me. He deposits the wheelchair outside it (in just the right place) and gives me a little wave |

I put chivalry to the sword, slay its presumptions, oppressions, and backward patriarchy.
Its hydra heads tumble, bloodied, at my feet, as my barbaric sweat glints in the Sun of my victory.
Chivalry lies dead, humiliated, before me.
Obvs, the chicks all flock to my feet.
Oh wait...hang on...?? |

I think even the term gentleman and lady are somewhat outdated.
They set gendered expectations of men and women.
Being conscientious and considerate are qualities I appreciate, but there's no necessity to ascribe to traditional cultural expectations.
However, I'd be happy for them to bring back duelling. Pistols at dawn, sabres pointy sticks in the pit. Get it on you tube - imagine the clicks. |

I will always hold a door open for anyone, I will offer a seat on a train to people older than me, those who are pregnant, or those who have mobility issues.
I just think that’s good manners. It’s how I was brought up.
And I add that I was actually born in a council house not hospital and my parents never owned it, so there was zero inheritance so I’m not a silver spoon person. I just consider myself an average bloke who speaks well for a Brummie!
Manners have helped me in work context , as I find it easy to get on with people. |

For some people polite respect, kindness and consideration are default behaviours.
And then you see threads reducing women politicians to sex objects.
I don't know if chivalry is dead but if anyone runs a jousting tournament I'll watch. |

Manners cost nothing. However I am not going to give up my seat to a woman or if I am by myself ask me to by them a drink, give up a place in a queue just because someone is a woman. It's called equality. |

So it depends on definitions, I receive fresh flowers weekly, get bought nice things, gets my doors, car door opened for me, he walks on the outside and holds my hand in public. But to talk to him you'd think none of those things, my poor workmates are seriously jealous, so I know 1 guy I can say is still a gentleman. |

We don't live in the same houses, so I chill at his, he's done up my entire back garden completely! And when he's in mine well Saturday for example my little one was playing up, he got bored!
Scrubbed kitchen, fridge, hoovered and washed all floors, then hit the bathroom and total ceiling to floor cleaned and went and did my food shop! No he's far from a typical man. They exist |

I don’t think it’s dead but it’s certainly dying.
I also don’t see chivalry as general politeness and kindness (which should be a given for any person) but going that bit further for a woman. Walking closest to the road, walking her to the door, opening a door for her are just some examples.
I don’t need it, and I don’t think less of anyone if they don’t do those things for me, but if they do? I notice them and find it a really attractive trait. |

Not most but definitely some, and these few can make a lot of noise! But they do not speak for all women. I cannot stand feminists, wouldn't ever have one as a friend, they do not represent me, my friends or women in general! So guys carry on being nice, we appreciate it! And it doesn't have to mean anything other than being polite and helping someone. I'm sure a 25yr old holding a door for a lady of 70 is not trying to get in her nickers. |

This is true. Also women also need to act on a way to be worthy of it.
Too many women use it for their own selfish ends |
