So I've been fairly rigid in my music tastes. I've always enjoyed various genres of rock from Indie, to Blues, to Alternative and Metal.
However, I've not really given Hip Hop as rap much of a chance outside of Eminem (Sorry Pickle ), however, I recently really got into Run The Jewels and absolutely love some of the beats and lyrics and want to give more artists a go. Any recommendations? |

"Such a broad spectrum.
Start by going back to it’s roots and work your way up to see how it’s evolved over the decades.
Way too many to mention"
That's what intimidates me! There's so much that I don't know where to go next. Off I go to listen to Rapper's Delight I guess |

The black album and the blueprint by jay Z
Nas- illmatic
Dave - PsychoDrama
J Hus- Big Conspiracy
All of Biggie’s work
Good kid maad city by Kendrick
J Cole - Forest Hill’s Drive and KOD
Kano- Hoodies all summer and made in the Manor
Skepta- Konnichiwa
Anything by Snoop Dogg
I think these are albums that I think are best for people getting into different types of rap. Pac is just more violent and my other favourite artists are too so I don’t think they’re for everyone. |

Ol' Dirty Bastard - Got Your Money
2-Pac - All About You
Digital Underground - The Humpty Dance + Same Song ft. 2 Pac
Rob Base + DJ EZ Rock - It Takes Two
Wu-Tang Clan - C.R.E.A.M
Rakim and Eric B - Paid in Full
The Fresh Prince and Jazzy Jeff - Summertime
2LiveCrew - Me So Horny
Eminem - Infinite (album)... Often overlooked and worth a listen.
These are pretty much always in my playlists |

Pretty much any Ye/Kanye West album is great and he tries out different styles on various albums so you might find one fits you better than others.
Beastie Boys are fun and utilise a lot of classic rock samples so make an easy transition from a fan of that genre.
Later Kendrick Lamar is kind of insufferable jazz infused and disjointed. Seems like trying to hard to be artsy. His earlier stuff is great, especially Section.80 and good kid, m.A.A.d city.
I find lots of the 90’s stuff that people would call golden era is really dated and corny now, Tupac, Biggie, NWA etc. There are a few good tunes but they’re kinda cheesy.
Some Memphis rap is pretty cool and a bit more fun, Three 6 Mafia, Bubba Sparxx etc. If you find a playlist of that stuff there will be a few jams.
Death Grips are great if you like heavier music? They’re kind of the NIN/Skinny Puppy of rap. Great diy punk aesthetic.
Kool AD, Childish Gambino, Earl Sweatshirt and Tyler the Creator are artists that’re relatively easy to get into and more postmodern and kinda hipster-nerd rappers.
There’s so much out there but it’s a genre full of so much vapid samey shiy that you have to trawl for gems. |

I'd still appreciate the suggestions. I might get round to them quicker if the rest are shit
Kidding, I love you all |

But if you're new, Romesh Ranganathan's R2 show is really good for an intro - some big stuff, but also introduces some lesser known artists.
Right, now where did I leave my pipe and slippers? |

Eminem is awesome. I also like prof green two.
Always liked de la soul who I listen to a lot.
Mainstream is where I noticed these acts, when pop music was okay.

Take a look at The Roots’s NPR Tiny Desk show on YouTube to see how powerful hip-hop acts can be.
They bring in Bilal and a brass band, but they’re very much a hip-hop act overall.
Agree on early Wu-Tang. Some of the solo albums in the 90s are great too. Also agree on Handsome Boy Modelling School.
Why not delve in to some of the turntablists too, as that’s at the heart of the genre. There’s so many legends, like Premier, DJ Shadow (his Endtroducing album is stunning) etc. Skratch Bastid has a great YouTube channel and is hugely inventive.
The best lyricists, producers and DJs in the genre are amazing (often not the ones everyone knows). I say that as someone who’s a classical musician, really . |

Joell Ortiz - Sing Like Bilal is one of the most perfectly constructed hip hop songs of all time. Premo is the best to ever do it |

Another vote for MF DOOM here
in particular the song Sofa King
pop that into spotify (if you have spotify) go to song radio and see what else pops up that tickles your synapses...
Also love the mixtape SOFT FOCUS by Vanilla - no lyrics all beats and samples
and Pet Sounds in the key of Dee by BULLION - remix of the Beach Boys
Enjoy your discoveries OP!

Old old school for me.
Pre 90's
The break dance era with electronic before t-pain"
In fact yes actually I'd say I'm far more of an electo fan than straight rap.
But I am not going to say anything else because someone will be along shortly to disagree with me. |

If you like Run the Jewels, you should check out Killer Mike and El-Ps other work. Killer Mike albums Micheal and R.A.P. El-Ps albums Fantastic Damage and the classic album Company Flow - Funcrusher Plus. If you like these check out other Def Jux (El-Ps former record label), albums like Cannibal Ox - The Cold Vein and Mr Lif - I Phantom |

Atmosphere is an absolute amazing shout (when life give you lemons). Quite accessible for someone who not really into hip hop/dipping the toe in . Also Kanye, the collage drop out
Some of the suggestions here are not that accessible imo
