Hello all

I've just binged-watched this over two nights and was really enjoying and interested. Then the last episode occurred and I'm thinking "What?!?!". Some great ideas in this Mike Flanagan series but he didn't know how to end it...

So my task, should you choose to accept, is what other programs / film have you invested in and become disappointed by the time it's ended?!

Midnight Mass is one of my favourite shows. I personally liked the ending.

As for disappointing endings, maybe The Expanse series. It theoretically hasn't ended because there are more books and they just dropped the series. But the last season was terrible to watch because they decided to kill of one of the main characters in the previous season due to off-screen issues.

Lost is pretty famous for ending badly. Not sure how else they could have ended it though

Somewhere In The Ether…

Quantum Leap.

THAT bloody ending!!!

Ok, so I understand it was sadly cancelled and had to be tied up swiftly but what a lazy, truly awful way to end it with simply some text onscreen telling us that Sam never got home.

…..oh, spoiler alert…

Transsexual Transylvania

Most shows tend to have bad or underwhelming endings, unless they've been thought through and planned from the beginning.

I actually thought The Expanse did a good job of ending, while still making it clear that the story continued. I didn't find it weak at all. It was a pity about Alex, but I prefer what they did to recasting the part, which would have jarred.

I liked it. I read an article about all the Egar Allen Poe references (each episode/character arc is a different Poe story or poem) and once I knew about that I started noticing loads of little Easter eggs.

Oh god yes! Dexter ended awfully; both the original run and more recently, New Blood

Somewhere In The Ether…

The X-Files.

The finale of the original run was dismal.

….as was the finale of the revisited series.

Such a shame

Alien.

I wouldn't go back to save my cat if an alien monster was on its way to eat me.

If my cat was next to me I may pick him up and hurl it at the alien hoping a quick snack may slow it down so I can escape.

I would feel sad when I'm safe in the escape pod but life goes on, as they say.

Mark Hamill is a treat in this series.

Oh you're entering the Flanaganverse!

I really enjoyed the ending to Midnight Mass. It felt right. Absolutely fapped myself silly over the truly poetic monologues that so oft feature in his works.

So TFotHoU. Truly fantastic. As always it's a bit of a slow burner but well worth sticking with. Watcher mentioned the Poe references, there's also the incredible cinematography and effective usage of colour to depict a certain motif. I think you'll enjoy it. Hope you do!

In terms of disappointing endings - Supernatural. I can't forgive them for that. Sure, the final scene had me crying and reaching for the comfort of ice cream but it was also so frustratingly quite shite.

Talking of Mark Hamil; I really enjoyed the series Knightfall in which he featured.

….unfortunately it was cancelled after only two seasons though and ended in an incredibly rushed and abrupt manner mid way through the second season A great final sword fight though at least

Yes. I really enjoyed it.

I remember being a bit disappointed by the ending of Babylon 5 - they were told they weren't getting a 5th season so they wrapped the main plot up quickly (so it felt rushed) and then they did get a 5th season but didn't really have a story to tell in it.

Also I agree about The Expanse, although more because the final season was quite short due to Covid and they wasted time on a sub plot that they could have spent actually bringing the main narrative to a more satisfying conclusion.

Well I finished the Fall of the House of Usher and that was excellent. Time for another Flanagan and Hill House is next
