Have you ever met a forum user?

Would you like to meet any?

Do you find people are as you expect them to be?

Got a slim chance of meeting one of the higher priestesses of the fora today which I'm really looking forward to, but I think work will get in the way. I have no reason to believe that she isn't as lovely IRL than on here.

Most are different to how i imagined - better in person than expected perhaps.. It's always a surprise to discover people can hold a conversation after so much winking and lusting in the lounge

I have, although he’s not a forum famous poster.

He was as I thought he’d be. I mainly chat general shite for ages before meeting so you tend to get a feel for the person. I’m generally lucky like that.

There are one or two I would like to meet, socially.

It's good you can get a feel for a person beforehand - I do prefer talking a fair bit if I'm meeting someone not for a group social for the reason you mentioned.

"Yep, met several. Made some lovely friends too. Some people are quieter/shyer than their forum persona but that's not unexpected. "

I think of the forum as being a snapshot of how a person is feeling at that particular moment in time. How they'd talk to people they feel comfortable/relaxed around.

I tend not to... judge people for being quieter or more shy - they might just be shy until they know you. ND with a sensory overload. Not having a good day. Myriad of reasons for it, really.

Yeah that’s it, and I wasn’t talking about meeting for sex, I’m talking about meeting a person in a social way.

I know some people don’t text well, so their personality will never come through. (Better face to face) they can come alive when you’re with them.

Then there is the person who is easy to make blush, or laugh and you don’t get to see that on a here. Some people have a wicked sense of humour, and they don’t get to say it on a forum which moves so quickly, and someone more prolific that posts has already said it. (I’m not sure if a lot of people pick up on that. )

Also, some a lot more flirty than they appear on the forum

Pre-pandemic I went to a few of the lounge social parties in Manchester, even got to the point where some of the forum regulars would recognise me and welcome me. I always felt like an outsider though, a late comer to a social group, someone who didn't know the secret password. A lot due to my own insecurities, to my lack of comfort in any large groups. Some due to my hearing problem (following conversations at parties sucks when you've got tinnitus), some due to my problems remembering names (seriously embarrassing when you can even go blank on the names of people in your work team, people that you've known for many years). It's been a lot better on the few occasions when I've met forumites either singly or in small groups, but maybe that's just because they must be the welcoming type to want to meet me anyway.

I love meeting forum people.

The best part for me is that you've managed to read their voice and get an feel for their character through their posts in a way that a profile and some photos can never do.

Real life meets are about the only way that I can try and win someone over, I'm not photogenic, and compared to the competition, nothing remarkable or noteworthy so to get the chance for someone get to see me and my personality in the real for me is really important.

Ah, Bella! Good to read you again.

It's a lovely surprise to have. There's a part of me that always hopes things translate but I try and not have too much hope. Expectation. I like when people surprise me and they're better, more enjoyable to be around than I'd thought mistakenly.

Why have you not said hello to the distant forum users? You should have! I've found that the vast majority are really rather friendly in person. Entertaining. And not intimidating. x

Over the years I've met hundreds. Largely due to organising and attending big socials. But I'll confess a dozen years ago I was a bit of a forum whore and did meet several for more than justva cuppa.

There's many more I'd love to meet, but as always....geography.

I've met and gotten to know many forum people over the years. Some I've met only once, fleetingly at socials, others I've become quite close to.

Mostly people are as I imagine them to be. There's been one or two over the years I've just not got on with but for the most part it's always been pretty positive.

a place somewhat adjacent to you…

I only had my first social with members of this forum per-se Saturday. I didn’t get to meet as many of those I wished to meet, as I had originally hoped. My wife & time had other plans, lol….short leash?!??

However expectation wise, most I had the opportunity to spend time with certainly came across more personable and made it easier to tune in to ‘their’ voice. Pleasant indeed. Some Different? sure, but that’s a good thing. Get comfortable being uncomfortable.

Of course, that goes without saying those I wished to meet but never had an appropriate opportunity; I’m Hoping to change that one day soon? If you’re one of them, feel free to ping me for a coffee Social; I’ll buy the coffee.

I will attend future socials. Might even roll my sleeves up, watch this space.

Very best regards

I did go to a social a number of years ago and a Munch …. The social was great as I met lots that I had chatted to .. and was the start of a number of friendships that continue… the Munch ( not sure if these still happen? Meeting for lunch somewhere) - the behaviour was very good to start with but as the wine hit.. some got a little ‘carried away’ and maybe forgot they were in a restaurant in the middle of the day… kinda put me off group stuff after that.

Prior to our long term absence from here, I (George) met about half a dozen ladies from the forum. Most have either gone completely or rarely post now. All were wonderful upon first meeting, but no, over time it certainly didn’t go as expected with some of them. One is still a good friend, I’m happy to say, even though we don’t talk as intensely as we used to, but I would be there for her in heartbeat if she needed me.

This time around, I don’t think we’ve met anyone outside of one little group social (everybody in attendance was wonderful).

I don’t elevate people from the forums, I just find connecting here is more organic because you have the opportunity to bump into each other in the virtual market square. It’s less direct, and evolves more naturally Xx

I agree with the last part - I've experienced relatively little drama in my time on here. The majority of encounters I've thoroughly enjoyed, I like learning people and understanding more of why they post in particular ways, about certain topics.

"Oh as for the the term "Fab royalty" it really makes me piss myself.

Noone is better than anyone else"

That's your definition.

For me it means 'instantly recognisable and bloody everywhere' and generally liked by everyone. Nothing to do with being better than anyone else.

I get that, but by using the term "royalty" it makes people wonder who that could be and can make others feel lesser and to me, that's not what the forums should be about.

Yes. Some are and I’m very lucky to have met them. Friendships can flourish from the forums!

Some are not at all

Yep. Hard agree.

I also can't think of a single person in my decade of being on here who has been generally liked by everyone. Or is instantly recognisable. And since when is hot pics associated with the forum? Forumite royalty is just... not the term.

There have been some forumites who did see themselves as royalty and better than everyone else.

There have been some forumites who pandered to them.

There are currently forumites who are loved and adored and have nice shiny arses from having them kissed daily that I see as nothing more than trolls.

To answer the ops question, I have met lots of people who post in the forums.

I use the forums as an additional filter.

Most of those I met one to one were as I imagined them to be with a few exceptions.

Most of those I met at group socials were also as expected but not always in a positive way.

I've always said that some fabbers struggle to tell the difference between productivity and popularity.

This is the Irish forum yes? Those you've met etc.

Sometimes I forget it exists and then I read your posts about the negative side of things and I remember.

And most of what I post isn't about the negatives. It's about the blindingly obvious and seeing people as they really are rather than just personas is actually a positive.

Yes, the ones you've met. The stories about them etc.

The popular trolls? I can't think of many bar two. Ish.

Anyway, I didn't want this thread to become about "forumite royalty" or have too many negative references to those who post on here etc. It happens with threads but this one has been quite pleasant to read overall and relatively dirty laundry airing free.

I do appreciate that not every experience is positive though.

"Pre-pandemic I went to a few of the lounge social parties in Manchester, even got to the point where some of the forum regulars would recognise me and welcome me. It's been a lot better on the few occasions when I've met forumites either singly or in small groups, but maybe that's just because they must be the welcoming type to want to meet me anyway."

I remember you from the Manchester socials, pre-pandemic.

Sometimes it can be down to personal insecurities but I also think... socials can be really quite daunting at times. People naturally talk to those they know/want to fuck and not many talk to new people. I realised at the last one I attended that I needed to get out of my comfort zone and make an effort. Make more feel included.

If you do ever decide to go back to one Polly, you'll be more than welcome and I'd definitely love to talk to you, x
