Has anyone been to southport
Jump to: Newest in thread
My dad told me about a time he went drinking in Southport with his mates in the 70s.
One of his mates sneezed and farted at the same time, and for years afterwards a sneeze-fart became known as a Southport Sneeze.
Sadly, this is the only thing I know about Southport |

I was there about 20 years ago to visit a 26 year old woman who was really into spanking and ageplay. Meeting me from the train at about 7pm and promptly hurrying me into a waiting car, she said that it "wasn't wise to hang around Southport at that time of night".
Not sure if it's changed that much since, but it was as rough as arseholes back then. |

Went to school very near there.
Returned to visit briefly after not going for years, about 6 months ago. It's really run down now..used to be sorted of the opposite and be somewhat up market back in the day though. |

"It’s just like a bit of a run down seaside town, really. I’ve been a few times, several years ago but it was pretty rough in certain parts."
Seems a common occurrence with seaside towns. Blackpool is another example |

I’ve been to Crosby beach to photo naked statues at sunset with a forumite it was awesome & memorable
I’ve also be to Southwold and various places along the south coast all were easily forgettable.

"It’s a shithole "
My friend calls it the 'arse end of nowhere' ... she's lived there for years so I let her off.
It's a shit hole.
Houses are nice. Shopping areas run down. Town centre is disability scooters, homeless, Greggs and pound shop..... Wetherspoons etc
I am about 6 miles outside of southport |

Grew up there
The last 20 years have not been kind the town's economy and the centre has become rundown
Lots of nice houses, but also a few rough areas
As with all seaside towns, it attracts it's fair share of weirdos |

To the OP, it depends what you like, if you like a typical seaside town then you won't go far wrong. There are places to eat, drink, the beach ( not much water ) a fair ,botanical gardens, a few shops and tat shops , arcades , etc etc |

Southport was “the” day out for us Liverpool estate kids back in the 80’ and mid 90’s.
It was spotlessly clean, flower beds, food stalls, arcades, the famous beach with no water, the fair and the pier; families everywhere.
It genuinely is the “coastal town they forgot to close down” nowadays, a really sad example of a lost era. |

"I've been to Buxton which is close to Southport
Buxton is at least 60 miles from Southport and they are as different as chalk and cheese. "
He might have been thinking of Stockport... Mind you, from Stockport to the sea is only marginally further than the distance from Southport to the sea, when the tide is out |

I have a mate there and was there last summer.
I found it ok on a clear day one can see Blackpool over the water, there's pubs and places to eat, live music by the pier.
Expensive for seaside items like ice cream.
But in all I enjoyed my time and will visit again this summer. |

How long ago since you went back? All of what you say is still there, except they have shut the pier for repairs. |

We have been to many seaside towns over the years and I would say this one was one of the better ones , very tidy, had all the usual things plus a bit extra, so I would say the comments are so far removed from what we saw.
OK we just saw the main spots but that's all we saw of the other places too.
Most odd. |

Just been today. Tide was in.
It’s not too bad a place, full of old people who think they’re better than everyone else.
Nightlife mediocre.
Shopping is poor.
Some really nice places on the outskirts.
Not a place I’d go for a holiday or for a night out etc but somewhere to go and wander.
