My dad told me about a time he went drinking in Southport with his mates in the 70s.

One of his mates sneezed and farted at the same time, and for years afterwards a sneeze-fart became known as a Southport Sneeze.

Sadly, this is the only thing I know about Southport

I was there about 20 years ago to visit a 26 year old woman who was really into spanking and ageplay. Meeting me from the train at about 7pm and promptly hurrying me into a waiting car, she said that it "wasn't wise to hang around Southport at that time of night".

Not sure if it's changed that much since, but it was as rough as arseholes back then.

It’s just like a bit of a run down seaside town, really. I’ve been a few times, several years ago but it was pretty rough in certain parts.

Seems a common occurrence with seaside towns. Blackpool is another example

Grew up there

The last 20 years have not been kind the town's economy and the centre has become rundown

Lots of nice houses, but also a few rough areas

As with all seaside towns, it attracts it's fair share of weirdos

Southport was “the” day out for us Liverpool estate kids back in the 80’ and mid 90’s.

It was spotlessly clean, flower beds, food stalls, arcades, the famous beach with no water, the fair and the pier; families everywhere.

It genuinely is the “coastal town they forgot to close down” nowadays, a really sad example of a lost era.

He might have been thinking of Stockport... Mind you, from Stockport to the sea is only marginally further than the distance from Southport to the sea, when the tide is out

I have a mate there and was there last summer.

I found it ok on a clear day one can see Blackpool over the water, there's pubs and places to eat, live music by the pier.

Expensive for seaside items like ice cream.

But in all I enjoyed my time and will visit again this summer.

We have been to many seaside towns over the years and I would say this one was one of the better ones , very tidy, had all the usual things plus a bit extra, so I would say the comments are so far removed from what we saw.

OK we just saw the main spots but that's all we saw of the other places too.

Most odd.

Just been today. Tide was in.

It’s not too bad a place, full of old people who think they’re better than everyone else.

Nightlife mediocre.

Shopping is poor.

Some really nice places on the outskirts.

Not a place I’d go for a holiday or for a night out etc but somewhere to go and wander.
