I think attention spans for *most* vary in accordance with how interested they are in the subject or task in hand.
I have no idea if they're shorter now than they used to be but judging by the intense concentration a kid can sustain over long periods of time on a computer game, I'm prepared to guess that attention spans remain the same just differently directed |

"Not noticeably, in my experience anyway.
I think us old people just like to pretend we didn't get bored as children, and just sat in silence reading all day."
yep.
Although I was that child a lot of the time. Quite happily so I might add |

Tbf, I DID sit and read, in silence, quite a lot. Our daughter asked if it was okay to sit in bed and read before breakfast this morning...... Go figure |

"Do people generally but kids especially have lower attention spans now? "
I cannot say I have noticed "in general", no. Then again, I am tunnel-visioned in my own focus so I don't tend to notice what goes on around me most if not all of the time.
I have had fellow co-workers come up to my desk and tap me on the shoulder and say "Your phone is ringing." This is without me wearing headphones either. If I am hyper-focussed, I won't even hear the blimming fire alarm. |
