How am I supposed to keep up with the lingo? Is lingo even a word I'm allowed to use? Yesterday my son mentioned roadmen. I still don't understand his garbled explanation for a word I've never heard before.

My favourite thing about fab is how young it makes me feel. Because in reality I am not and the youth of today and their language are constant reminders of that. The slang of my youth is slowly being replaced by terms I don’t know. But my 15 year old brother is useful to keep me up to date |

I watched a bit of junior master chef a few nights ago, and every single dish, the contestants said the exact same thing “smashed it mate, smashed it bro”, even when the dish was clearly shit and had been panned by the judges, then one of them cooked something decent and the judge said “smashed it mate”.

You have to bear in mind that culturally the rest of the UK, with maybe the exception of Birmingham, lags behind London in terms of slang, among other things.
There's non-londoners only now learning of words that I was using in the mid 2000's
Since I've been in the North West some people are still wearing clothing styles up here that haven't been seen in London since 2010. |

My favourite thing about the _slang_ of the youth is the fact that it is a mix of so many different cultures and variations of English. It’s massively influenced by Black cultures around the world. It’s a variation of English. A way of communicating. A language that you slip into around familiar people or strangers that get it. When you don’t speak any language you feel excluded. But actually it’s rather beautiful. I hate more than anything people that try and pretend that variations of English are less than or are annoying just because they don’t speak it. And fab is one of those places but it’s a general thing I’ve found in my life. It’s why even though you can be born here you still get the ‘you speak so well’ when you’re code switching Etc etc.

But the point of language is that it’s used to communicate, generally, with people that do understand it. The obvious limit of this type of language exists only with people who are unable to codeswitch. Which is not because of the language but because of other social factors that are likely impacting their education (where they learn ‘good’ English). I’ve seen fabbers communicate in Spanish with other people and I have no idea what they’re saying, and perhaps I’m excluded, but they’re communicating with people that DO understand. If they did that in conversation with me that’s entirely different. But this language, or this variation of the English language, is great. And it’s great because in many ways it actually transcends geography. |
